Humanity lives behind huge walls, safe from man-eating giants. When the giants break through, a young boy's desire for freedom starts a bloody fight for survival.
For a hundred years, humanity has lived peacefully behind three large walls: Maria, Rose, and Sina. These walls protect them from man-eating giants called Titans. Young Eren Jaeger, his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman, and their friend Armin Arlert live in Shiganshina District, an outer town of Wall Maria. Eren wants to see the world outside, which Mikasa dislikes, but Armin is also curious. Their peace ends when a huge, 60-meter-tall Titan, never seen before, appears and kicks a large hole in Wall Maria's gate. Smaller Titans rush in, starting a massacre. Eren watches in horror as his mother, Carla, is trapped under rubble and eaten by a smiling Titan. This event makes him want revenge against all Titans.
After the wall breaks, the remaining Shiganshina citizens go to evacuation boats for Wall Rose. Eren, Mikasa, and Armin are among the survivors, but the boats quickly fill. Many must stay behind, sacrificing themselves to the Titans. During the escape, Eren is overwhelmed by sadness and anger over his mother's death. He promises to kill every Titan. Mikasa quietly supports this, though she focuses more on protecting him. Armin is upset by humanity's helplessness and encourages Eren's resolve with his own desire for a world without fear. They are now refugees, facing an uncertain future inside Wall Rose.
Wall Maria's fall causes many deaths and loss of land. About one-fifth of humanity's remaining people die or move, straining resources inside Wall Rose. To ease food shortages, the government sends many refugees, including Armin's grandfather, on a mission to retake Wall Maria. This mission fails, causing more deaths. This harsh reality strengthens Eren's resolve. At age 12, he, Mikasa, and Armin join the 104th Training Corps, the military group that trains soldiers to fight Titans. Eren wants revenge, Mikasa wants to protect Eren, and Armin wants to prove himself and help humanity survive.
The recruits train hard, learning to use Omnidirectional Mobility (ODM) Gear. This system uses grapples and gas to move in three dimensions and attack Titans' weak spots. Eren struggles with the ODM gear at first and cannot balance during the suspension test. Instructor Keith Shadis, a strict figure, initially calls Eren a failure. But with Mikasa's quiet help and Armin's analysis, Eren finds his equipment is faulty. After switching gear, he passes the test, showing his natural ability and strong will. Mikasa, meanwhile, is a natural, excelling in all training. Armin shows great intelligence, despite his physical limits.
Five years pass, and Eren, Mikasa, and Armin graduate from the 104th Training Corps. Eren has improved a lot, though he still relies on his passion. Mikasa is the top graduate, and Armin is known for his strategic mind. On graduation day, as they are assigned to the Garrison Regiment in Trost District (an outer town of Wall Rose), the unthinkable happens: the Colossal Titan reappears, breaking Wall Rose just like it did Wall Maria. Panic starts as Titans again flood a human city. The new cadets, including Eren and his friends, immediately fight for survival against the monstrous invaders, facing the horror they trained for.
During the Trost invasion, Titans overwhelm Eren's squad. Despite his hatred and determination, Eren does not have much real combat experience yet. He tries to save Armin from being eaten by a Titan, but Eren pushes Armin out of the way and a Titan swallows him. His comrades see this horrible event and believe he is dead. Mikasa is devastated but hides her sadness to keep fighting, now focused on protecting others. Armin is shaken, struggling with the trauma of almost dying and seeing his best friend's death, feeling helpless and not good enough.
Mikasa, at first stunned by news of Eren's death, quickly remembers Eren's words about not giving up. She turns her sadness into a cold, deadly resolve. She leads a charge against the Titans, showing her great skill with the ODM gear, cutting down many Titans quickly. Her actions inspire other cadets, but her reckless solo attacks put her at risk. She faces trouble when her gas runs out, leaving her exposed. Just as she prepares for her last stand, a rogue Titan appears and, surprisingly, attacks other Titans. Its unusual behavior gets her attention amid the bloodshed.
During the big attack, a mysterious, unusual Titan appears. Unlike others, this Titan shows strange intelligence and ferocity, actively targeting and killing other Titans. It seems to protect the human soldiers. This 'Rogue Titan' becomes a focus of both fear and confusion for the remaining cadets. Mikasa, seeing its actions, is curious and follows it, wanting to understand what it is. The Rogue Titan's existence challenges everything humanity thought they knew about their enemies. It offers a small bit of hope amid the despair, but also raises big questions about the Titans' true nature and reasons. Its appearance changes the battle.
The Rogue Titan keeps attacking other Titans, eventually collapsing from exhaustion. To Mikasa and Armin's surprise, watching from afar, Eren Jaeger emerges, alive and aware, from the nape of the fallen Rogue Titan's neck. He is steaming and seems to have merged with the Titan's flesh. This shocking discovery confirms that Eren can turn into a Titan himself. The other soldiers are terrified and confused, unable to understand this impossible change. Eren's miraculous return changes the battle and immediately raises questions about who he is, his powers, and whether he is now a threat or humanity's greatest hope.
After he emerges from the Titan, Garrison soldiers immediately surround Eren. Seeing him as a monstrous threat, they prepare to execute him. Captain Kitz Woermann, scared and suspicious, orders his men to fire a cannon at Eren, Mikasa, and Armin. Armin, despite his fear, steps forward and passionately argues for Eren's humanity and his potential value to humanity's survival. He reminds them of the Colossal Titan and the serious situation, saying Eren is a weapon that could change things. Just as Woermann orders the firing, Eren partially transforms, making a Titan arm to block the cannonball. This saves him and his friends and further confirms the military's terror.

The Supporting
Woermann's character remains largely static in this volume, serving as an embodiment of fear and resistance to the unknown.
The Antagonist
The Colossal Titan serves as the initial, devastating force that shatters humanity's peace and drives the plot forward.
The Antagonist
The Smiling Titan's single act establishes the central conflict and Eren's motivation.
The main theme is humanity's desperate fight for survival against a huge, threatening force. Wall Maria's fall and the Trost District invasion show how fragile human life is and the constant fear of being eaten. Characters like Eren want to fight back, while others, like Captain Woermann, are frozen by fear. This shows different reactions to extreme pressure. The forced evacuations, food shortages, and failed missions all show how serious humanity's situation is.
“On that day, mankind received a grim reminder. We lived in fear of the Titans and were disgraced to live in these cages we called walls.”
Eren Jaeger's main reason for action is a strong desire for revenge against the Titans, especially after seeing his mother die. This hatred makes him determined to join the military and fight, even when things look impossible. His promise to 'kill every last one' of them defines him. This theme explores how hatred can be destructive but also motivating. It shows how it can push people to do amazing things but also make them ignore other important things. Mikasa also has a quieter, but equally strong, need to protect Eren, because of past trauma.
“I'll kill them! Every last one of them!”
Eren's ability to turn into a Titan directly questions what 'humanity' and 'monster' mean. When Eren transforms, the very people he wants to protect see him as a threat. This makes him question who he is and if he is still human. This theme explores the fear of the unknown and prejudice against anything seen as 'different.' Armin's strong defense of Eren shows the struggle to look past appearances and accept potential, even if it comes in a scary form. It sets the stage for more exploration of what it means to be human in a world with monsters.
“I may not be human, but I am not a monster! I'm humanity's last hope!”
The walls that protect humanity also trap them. Eren's desire to see the outside world, stated early in the story, represents a wish for freedom from their literal and figurative cages. The Titans stand for the force that keeps humanity confined. Breaking the walls directly attacks this confinement. This theme explores the human spirit's natural desire for exploration and liberty. It contrasts this with the perceived safety of isolation and the terrible results when that safety breaks. The desire for freedom drives many characters, including Armin, to want a world without walls.
“If we don't fight, we can't win!”
Three concentric walls protecting humanity from Titans.
The colossal Walls Maria, Rose, and Sina are the primary defensive structures that have protected humanity for over a century. They represent both humanity's sanctuary and their prison. The existence of the walls establishes the confined setting and the constant threat from the outside. Their breach, first by the Colossal Titan, is the inciting incident of the entire series, shattering humanity's sense of security and driving the plot forward. They are a physical manifestation of humanity's fear and their desperate attempt to cling to survival.
Specialized equipment for aerial combat against Titans.
The ODM Gear is a complex system of harnesses, gas-powered propulsion, and grappling hooks that allows soldiers to move at high speeds in three dimensions, making them capable of engaging Titans in combat. This device is crucial for the narrative's action sequences, enabling the unique combat style against Titans. It also serves as a training device, highlighting characters' physical prowess and skill, as seen in Eren's initial struggles and Mikasa's mastery. The gear's limitations, such as running out of gas, also create tension and vulnerability during battles.
Humans with the ability to transform into intelligent Titans.
The revelation of Eren's ability to transform into a Titan is the central plot twist of the first volume. This device introduces a new layer of mystery and conflict, as it blurs the line between human and monster. It provides humanity with a potential weapon against the Titans, but also creates deep fear and suspicion among the military and populace. The existence of Titan Shifters fundamentally changes the understanding of the Titans and sets up many future mysteries regarding their origins and the nature of their power, transforming the narrative from a simple survival story into something far more complex.
A traumatic past event that fuels the protagonist's motivation.
The vivid flashback to Eren witnessing his mother, Carla, being devoured by a Titan is a powerful and frequently revisited plot device. It serves as the primary catalyst for Eren's unwavering hatred and revenge-driven motivation. This traumatic memory is not just a past event but a constant emotional anchor that explains Eren's actions and intense resolve throughout the story. It effectively grounds his character in personal tragedy and makes his extreme reactions understandable to the audience, providing a clear emotional stakes for the entire narrative.
