After a New Year's Eve plague brings magic and chaos, survivors navigate society's ruins, finding purpose and new beginnings as ancient good and evil awaken.
On New Year's Eve, a fast-spreading illness called 'The Doom' starts to kill people worldwide. Society quickly falls apart as systems fail, governments collapse, and over half of humanity dies. During this chaos, magic, which had been gone for a long time, returns. Lana Bingham, a witch in New York City with her lover Max, finds her powers growing. Other people worldwide, good and evil, also discover magic. The world becomes a dangerous new place where science is useless, and old forces return, bringing both wonder and fear.
As New York City becomes lawless, with gangs, violence, and new dangerous magical beings, Lana and Max know they cannot stay. They decide to go west, hoping to find a safer place. Leaving the city is dangerous. They must use Lana's growing magic and Max's practical skills to survive. They see both the bad actions of desperate survivors and moments of kindness, which makes them rely more on each other as they travel through the ruined world. They do not know their exact destination, but escaping the city's immediate danger is their main goal.
Across the destroyed continent, other groups of survivors also begin difficult journeys west. Arlys, a journalist, writes down events with paper and pen, with her young colleague Fred, who has new magical gifts. Chuck, a smart tech expert, tries to make sense of the digital chaos. Rachel, a doctor, and Jonah, a paramedic, care for a new mother and her three babies, determined to protect them. These different groups face the same problems: finding food and shelter, avoiding gangs, and dealing with new magical threats. They are all driven by a desire to live and a vague hope for a better future.
Lana and Max eventually find a secluded farm. It is protected by a strong magical barrier and has a small, diverse group of survivors, some of whom also have gifts. Among them are Katie, an elderly witch, and Eddie, a resourceful farmer. This farm becomes a safe place where Lana can develop her magic with Katie's help, and Max can use his skills. The community works together, sharing resources and defending against outside threats. This strengthens their bonds and gives them a temporary break from the destroyed world. Here, Lana starts to understand the bigger magical conflict happening.
At the farm, Katie tells Lana a prophecy: a child with great power, born of both light and darkness, will come and be important for the future of magic and humanity. This child will lead. Soon after, Lana finds out she is pregnant with Max's child. This news gives her journey a new, deep meaning, as she realizes her unborn child is the one from the prophecy. The community supports Lana, knowing they must protect her and her child from the growing dark forces that want to control or destroy the prophesied baby.
Attacks from evil magical beings and desperate, violent humans break the peace at the farm, showing that no place is completely safe. The community, led by Eddie and helped by Lana's growing magic, successfully fights off these threats. During this time, Arlys, Fred, and Chuck, after their own dangerous travels, arrive at the farm and are welcomed. Their different skills and Fred's new magical abilities are very useful. The various survivor groups start to come together, forming a stronger, more resilient unit, preparing for the bigger conflicts ahead.
After months, and with the whole community watching, Lana gives birth to a daughter, Mo. The birth is a moment of great hope and wonder amid the despair of the post-Doom world. Katie and other gifted people immediately recognize Mo as the child of the prophecy, having a mix of light and possibly dark magic. Her arrival solidifies the community's goal: to protect and raise this child who will shape the future. The dark forces, however, also know about Mo's birth and increase their efforts to find her.
Years pass, and Mo grows into a strong, smart, and very powerful child. She shows amazing magical abilities from a young age, much greater than her mother's or anyone else's. With guidance from Lana, Katie, and the whole community, Mo learns to control her powers and understand her role. She is not just a child of prophecy but an active part of the new world, often challenging traditions and showing a strong will to protect her loved ones and fight for fairness. Her presence inspires hope and unity, but also attracts those who want to use or destroy her.
As Mo grows, so does the power and organization of the Unmade, an evil entity that appeared from the Doom. It uses dark magic and controls corrupted beings. They launch more advanced and brutal attacks on the farm and other groups that resist. The community, now a strong group of gifted and non-gifted people, must constantly adapt and fight to live. These battles are not just physical; they also test the survivors' determination and unity. The Unmade's goal is clear: to kill Mo or turn her to their side, ensuring they control the new world.
The community at the farm, now called the 'New Hope' settlement, knows that a final fight with the Unmade is coming. They prepare more intensely. Mo, now a powerful young woman, accepts her role as a leader. Max, Lana, Fred, Chuck, Arlys, and others all use their unique skills to strengthen defenses, train fighters, and gather information. They make alliances with other scattered survivor groups. The stakes are very high, as humanity's future and magic's fate are in danger. Everything is ready for a big battle between light and darkness.

The Antagonist
The Unmade continuously grows in power and organization, representing the escalating threat of darkness against the nascent forces of light and hope.
This theme explores the complete societal collapse caused by 'The Doom' and the new, magically infused world that follows. It shows not just destruction but also the chance for rebirth and the creation of new communities and ways of life. The story constantly compares lost technology and order with raw magic and human strength. The farm community, especially, shows this theme by building a new society from the old world's ashes, adapting to a world where old forces now rule.
“The end has come. The beginning comes next.”
A main theme is magic returning after being gone for centuries. The book explores how magic appears in different people, from Lana's witchcraft to Fred's elemental powers, and the dark magic of the Unmade. It looks at what happens when magic becomes a real, strong force in daily life, shaping survival, conflict, and existence itself. This theme shows humanity's struggle to understand and control these new abilities, highlighting both the wonder and fear they bring to a world not ready for them.
“Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magic rose up in its place.”
The novel strongly shows how important community and working together are for survival in a post-apocalyptic world. Individual journeys eventually combine into a group effort to build and protect a safe place. Characters from different backgrounds, with and without magic, learn to rely on each other, sharing their skills and resources. The farm community shows this, proving that unity and support are needed not just to live, but also to keep hope and humanity in the face of great despair and outside threats.
“In a world of survivors where every stranger encountered could be either a savage or a savior, none of them knows exactly where they are heading, or why. But a purpose awaits them that will shape their lives and the lives of all those who remain.”
This theme explores the clear difference between forces of light and darkness, shown by the rising Unmade and the prophesied child, Mo. The story presents a world where moral choices are clear and have big results, and people must choose a side. Mo's destiny as a leader who will balance light and darkness is central to this theme. It suggests that even in the worst times, a chosen person will appear to fight for humanity. It looks at what makes a hero and the bravery needed to face great evil.
“A child of immense power, born of both light and darkness, will come into the world and play a pivotal role in the future of magic and humanity.”
Despite the great destruction and constant threats, the story always includes hope and human strength. Characters like Arlys, who keeps recording history, Rachel and Jonah, who tirelessly give medical care, and the whole farm community, who build a new life, show this theme. Lana's pregnancy and Mo's birth are strong symbols of hope for the future. It suggests that even after huge loss, the human spirit's ability to love, create, and have lasting purpose can win.
“They had lost so much, but they had gained something too: a fierce, unbreakable will to live, and a future to fight for.”
A global pandemic that triggers societal collapse and the return of magic.
The Doom serves as the inciting incident and the primary catalyst for all subsequent events in the novel. It is a mysterious, rapid-spreading plague that decimates the global population, leading to the breakdown of all established order and technology. Crucially, its onset coincides with the reawakening of magic. This device effectively wipes the slate clean, creating a post-apocalyptic setting where new rules, both mundane and magical, must be established, and old societal structures are rendered obsolete, forcing humanity to adapt or perish.
A mystical foretelling of a powerful child destined to lead and balance forces.
The prophecy is a classic narrative device that introduces a sense of destiny and a clear stakes for the future. It foretells the birth of a child, Mo, who will possess immense power and be pivotal in the struggle between light and darkness. This prophecy gives purpose to Lana's pregnancy and provides a central goal for both the protagonists (to protect Mo) and the antagonists (to corrupt or destroy her). It elevates the personal struggles of the characters into a grander, cosmic battle, giving their actions greater significance.
Multiple groups of survivors embarking on perilous travels to an unknown west.
The journey motif is used to introduce and develop a diverse cast of characters, showing their individual struggles and the dangers of the new world. The various groups heading west—Lana and Max, Arlys and Fred, Rachel and Jonah, Chuck—eventually converge at the farm, symbolizing the gathering of disparate elements to form a new whole. This device allows the author to depict different facets of the post-apocalyptic landscape and the varied responses of humanity to the crisis, highlighting themes of survival, hope, and community building.
A magically protected haven where diverse survivors gather and build a new society.
The farm acts as a central hub and symbol of hope amidst the chaos. It's a place where characters find refuge, build community, and prepare for future conflicts. This device allows for the development of character relationships, the training of gifted individuals, and the establishment of a new societal model. Its magical protections underscore the shift from a technological to a magical world, making it a crucial setting for nurturing the prophesied child and fostering resistance against the Unmade.
