Kaladin faces his new powers, Shallan uncovers old secrets, and Roshar nears a new Desolation, threatened by an assassin and the Parshendi's desperate choices.
After his actions at the Tower, Kaladin is now Captain of the King's personal guard, protecting King Elhokar and Highprince Dalinar Kholin. Despite his new rank, Kaladin mistrusts lighteyes, especially Amaram, and struggles with Alethi court politics. His bond with his honorspren, Syl, strengthens, showing his progress as a Windrunner. Kaladin also secretly trains with his new Surgebinding abilities, using Lashings and Adhesion, but he is careful about revealing them, fearing the history of the Knights Radiant and another Recreance.
Shallan Davar, pretending to be the scholar Veil, travels with Jasnah Kholin to the Shattered Plains to research the Voidbringers and Desolations. During their sea trip, assassins attack their ship. Jasnah appears to die saving Shallan, forcing Shallan to use her Lightweaving to escape the sinking ship and a storm. Stranded, Shallan joins a caravan led by the mercenary Yalb, making her way through dangerous lands. She improves her Lightweaving and Soulcasting, often using illusions to protect herself and the group, all while dealing with the apparent death of Jasnah.
Highprince Dalinar Kholin continues to have prophetic visions during highstorms, which he believes are messages from the Almighty. These visions show past Desolations and the Knights Radiant, urging him to unite Alethkar. He faces much opposition from other highprinces, especially Sadeas, who works against him. Dalinar makes Kaladin Captain of the Royal Guard, a controversial move due to Kaladin's darkeyes status, which further alienates some highprinces but shows Dalinar's commitment to merit. He also gives Adolin Kholin more command, preparing him for leadership.
Szeth-son-son-Vallano, the Assassin in White, is reactivated by his new master, King Taravangian of Jah Keved. Taravangian, believing he is divinely tasked with saving humanity, orders Szeth to kill leaders who do not cooperate with his plan for a united Roshar. Szeth, still weighed down by his 'truthless' curse and Shin code, reluctantly obeys, using his Surgebinding and Shardblade. His actions destabilize Roshar's political scene, creating chaos that Taravangian plans to use. Szeth, however, is increasingly troubled by his actions and the voices he hears.
After a difficult journey, Shallan reaches the Shattered Plains, presenting herself as Jasnah Kholin's ward and a scholar. Dalinar Kholin quickly accepts her, and she begins researching ancient texts and fabrials for information about the Voidbringers. She forms a complex relationship with Adolin Kholin, initially for an arranged marriage, which becomes genuine affection. Shallan also observes Kaladin and his bridgemen, getting pulled into the warcamp's dynamics while secretly developing her Lightweaving and investigating Roshar's deeper mysteries, including the true nature of the Parshendi.
Facing fewer numbers and constant losses against the Alethi, the Parshendi warleader Eshonai convinces her people to take a desperate step. They intentionally summon a highstorm and expose themselves to its power, allowing old spren to bond with them, changing them into terrifying Stormform. This new form gives them more strength, resilience, and the ability to control stormlight, fundamentally changing the war. Eshonai, now in Stormform, leads her people with new ferocity, hoping to drive the Alethi from the Shattered Plains and ensure their survival, despite the dark implications of their new power.
Kaladin's bond with Syl grows stronger, giving him more control over his Surgebinding, including flight. He uses his powers secretly to protect the Kholin household and his bridgemen. His dislike for Amaram grows when he learns Amaram is involved in a plot to discredit Dalinar. Kaladin openly challenges Amaram, accusing him of crimes against Kaladin's former squad and stealing his Shardblade. This public confrontation, though not fully resolved, shows Kaladin's sense of justice and his willingness to defy social hierarchy, strengthening his loyalty to Dalinar and his own moral code.
Through flashbacks and self-reflection, Shallan confronts repressed memories of her past trauma. It is revealed that she killed her father with a Shardblade to protect her family from his growing madness, a secret she had buried. This painful discovery, helped by her growing bond with Pattern, her Cryptic spren, allows her to fully accept her identity as a Lightweaver. By accepting her past and the lies she told herself, Shallan's powers become much stronger, letting her Soulcast more easily and create complex illusions.
During a feast organized by Dalinar to celebrate a victory and try to unite, Szeth-son-son-Vallano attacks the Alethi warcamp. Using his Surgebinding, he causes chaos, targeting King Elhokar and Highprince Dalinar. Kaladin, now fully accepting his powers as a Windrunner, acts to defend the king and Dalinar. He fights Szeth in a dramatic aerial battle across the warcamp, showing his growing skill with Lashing and Adhesion. This fight marks a turning point, as Kaladin openly reveals his Radiant abilities to a shocked Alethi court and public.
Kaladin and Szeth fight an epic duel above the Shattered Plains, both using powerful Surgebinding. Kaladin, with Syl's help, skillfully uses his Lashings to match Szeth's gravity control, while Szeth uses his Shardblade and greater experience. The fight shows their powers, ending with Kaladin gaining the upper hand. He disarms Szeth and, with strength and determination, defeats him. Szeth is badly wounded, and Kaladin, in a moment of mercy, leaves him to the elements. This public event confirms the return of the Knights Radiant, sending shockwaves across Roshar.
The Alethi launch a large attack on the Parshendi capital of Narak, only to find the Parshendi transformed into terrifying Stormform warriors. A fierce battle follows, with the Alethi taking heavy losses. During the chaos, Dalinar has a vision, showing that the Parshendi were not the Voidbringers, but were manipulated by Odium. He learns that Desolations are cyclical and that the Heralds broke their oath. At the same time, Shallan discovers the true purpose of Urithiru and the Oathgate, realizing her role in reawakening the Radiants. The battle ends in a devastating highstorm, which the Parshendi try to use.
Amid the battle at Narak, Shallan, guided by her spren Pattern and ancient knowledge, realizes the Parshendi's focus on the highstorm relates to the Oathgate. She, with unexpected help from Renarin Kholin, who also shows a nascent spren bond, works to activate the ancient mechanism. Together, they successfully open the Oathgate, creating a portal to the city of Urithiru, the old home of the Knights Radiant. This achievement provides a refuge for the surviving Alethi and begins a new era for Roshar, as the threat of Odium and the Desolation looms.
As the Alethi retreat through the activated Oathgate to Urithiru, Dalinar, seeing the devastation and the Heralds' betrayal, speaks his third Ideal as a Bondsmith: "I will unite instead of divide. I will bring men together." This strengthens his bond with the Stormfather and gives him more power. Afterward, the remaining Alethi highprinces and Shardbearers, humbled by the battle and revelations, pledge loyalty to Dalinar, recognizing him as the leader needed to face the coming Desolation. This moment marks the true start of the new Knights Radiant and humanity's unification against the coming darkness.
After Kaladin defeats Szeth, the badly wounded Assassin in White is left to die. However, Lift, a young Edgedancer with unique Surgebinding abilities, finds and revives him with her Regrowth. Lift's help is quickly followed by the appearance of Nale, the Herald of Justice, who is hunting Szeth. Nale believes Szeth's existence as a 'truthless' and a Surgebinder is wrong and must be corrected to prevent the return of the Desolations. Nale plans to execute Szeth, but Lift's presence and her own Radiant powers complicate his plans, hinting at a larger conflict among the Heralds.
The Parshendi's change into Stormform, powered by highstorm spren, confirms their identity as the old 'Voidbringers.' It is revealed that the spren they bonded with are Fused, old entities connected to Odium. This changes the understanding of the Desolations, showing that the Parshendi, or the Fused possessing them, are the real enemy, manipulated by Odium. The war on the Shattered Plains was only a start to a much larger, older conflict, with the Parshendi's desperate choice unleashing a new threat on Roshar, directly linked to the return of the Desolations.

The novel explores the heavy burden on its leaders, especially Dalinar and Kaladin. Dalinar tries to unite the warring highprinces and make tough moral choices for Roshar, often facing doubt and resistance. Kaladin, despite his darkeyes status, must protect the king and Dalinar, feeling the pressure of his new command and the lives under his care. Both characters deal with the sacrifices required and the isolation that comes from making decisions affecting thousands, as seen in Dalinar's attempts to hold the highprinces together and Kaladin's internal fight to protect his men and the Kholins.
““The question,” Dalinar said, “is not whether you will fall. It is whether you will rise.””
Shallan's story is about healing from deep trauma and facing hard truths. Her buried memories of killing her father block her powers and identity. Only by facing these truths, guided by Pattern, can she fully use her Lightweaving and Soulcasting abilities. Similarly, Kaladin's struggles with depression and his mistrust of lighteyes come from past betrayals and slavery. His journey is about learning to trust and forgive, both others and himself, allowing him to fully bond with Syl and accept his role as a Radiant.
““The most important step a man can take? It's not the first one, is it? It's the next one. Always the next step, Dalinar.””
The book looks at the nature of power, both political and supernatural, and its potential for corruption. The Alethi highprinces' constant fighting and greed for Shards show how power can corrupt, hindering unity. Szeth's forced use of Surgebinding shows how power, even unwillingly used, can cause great destruction and personal pain. The Parshendi's desperate choice to use Stormform, a power connected to Odium, shows how seeking power for survival can lead to a terrifying change and loss of self, hinting at an older, darker corruption.
““Honor is dead. But I'll see what I can do.””
Words of Radiance is about the return of old powers and the fulfillment of forgotten prophecies. Dalinar's visions, Shallan's research into the Voidbringers, and the re-emergence of Surgebinding through Kaladin and Shallan all point to the coming Desolation. The activation of the Oathgate and the revelation of Urithiru mark a turning point, as the world begins to remember and embrace the legacy of the Knights Radiant. The Parshendi's transformation into Stormform marks the return of the 'Voidbringers,' setting the stage for a new era of conflict and the re-establishment of the old war.
““Ten spears go to battle, but only one returns. The others… They are broken. And they are forgotten.””
Both Kaladin and Shallan deal with their identities throughout the novel. Kaladin struggles to combine his past as a slave and surgeon with his new role as a captain and a developing Knight Radiant, fighting against lighteyes' prejudices and his own self-doubt. Shallan, more acutely, creates multiple personas (Veil, Radiant) to cope with her traumatic past and expectations. Her journey is about bringing these parts of herself together, accepting her 'lies' and 'truths' to become whole and fully use her powers as a Lightweaver. Their spren help guide them toward self-acceptance.
““Sometimes, a hypocrite is nothing more than a man in the process of changing.””
Magical abilities granted by spren bonds, allowing manipulation of fundamental forces.
Surgebinding is the primary magic system, involving ten distinct powers (Surges) tied to specific orders of Knights Radiant. Kaladin wields Adhesion and Gravitation as a Windrunner, allowing him to stick objects together and manipulate gravity for flight. Shallan uses Transformation and Illumination as a Lightweaver, enabling her to Soulcast objects and create realistic illusions. Its re-emergence is a central driver of the plot, signaling the return of the Radiants and the coming Desolation, and its mastery is key to the protagonists' development and survival.
Mystical weapons and armor, remnants of the Knights Radiant, granting immense power.
Shardblades are sentient spren in blade form, capable of cutting almost anything and severing spirits. Shardplate is near-indestructible armor. These artifacts are coveted by the Alethi highprinces and are symbols of power and status. Their true nature as spren (dead or alive) is a key mystery. Their use in battle, particularly by Adolin, and Kaladin's eventual use of a living Shardblade (Syl) highlight their significance, while the loss and acquisition of these items drive much of the political and military conflict, especially in the dueling arena and Kaladin's past with Amaram.
Ancient, magical portals connecting various locations, including the legendary city of Urithiru.
The Oathgate is a network of ancient, magical transportation devices, a key piece of Radiant technology. Its activation at the end of the book allows the Alethi to escape the devastating battle at Narak and reach Urithiru, the legendary city of the Knights Radiant. This device represents a critical turning point, providing a sanctuary and a strategic advantage, while also hinting at the vast, interconnected world and advanced technology of the ancient Radiants, setting up future explorations and conflicts within Urithiru itself.
Periodic, devastating storms that bring Stormlight and carry prophetic visions.
Highstorms are massive, destructive meteorological phenomena that sweep across Roshar, bringing Stormlight – the energy source for Surgebinding – and occasionally prophetic visions. The Stormfather, a powerful cognitive entity, is the living embodiment of these storms and a key figure in Dalinar's journey, providing him with visions of the past and future. The storms are a constant threat and a source of power, shaping the environment and influencing the actions of all inhabitants. The Parshendi's deliberate use of a highstorm to transform into Stormform demonstrates their unique relationship with this force.
Cyclical, world-ending catastrophes caused by the return of the Voidbringers and Odium.
The Desolation is a historical cycle of catastrophic events that nearly destroy civilization on Roshar, caused by the return of the Voidbringers (revealed to be the Fused, manipulating the Parshendi) and the malevolent Shard, Odium. The threat of the coming Desolation drives much of the narrative, motivating Dalinar's push for unity, Shallan's research, and Taravangian's machinations. The book reveals that the Desolations are not merely a historical event but an imminent threat, fundamentally reshaping the understanding of the world's history and the challenges facing the protagonists.
