Blessed with angelic power and haunted by prophetic visions, Clara must navigate a dangerous destiny and a celestial love triangle as a fiery apocalypse looms.
Clara Gardner, a 16-year-old Nephilim (part-angel), has a clear vision during her brother Jeffrey's soccer game. She sees a big forest fire, a handsome, intense boy, and feels a sense of coming destiny. Her mother, Wendy, also a Nephilim, immediately knows this means Clara's 'purpose' is starting. To help Clara understand her destiny, the family, including her human father, moves from their life in California to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. They choose this town because Clara's vision showed her purpose would unfold there, and she was meant to find the boy from her vision.
When they arrive in Jackson Hole, Clara enrolls at Jackson Hole High School. Almost at once, she meets Christian Prescott, the boy from her vision. Christian is also a Nephilim, and his intense look and quiet manner draw Clara in, confirming her belief that he is linked to her destiny. However, she also meets Tucker Avery, a charming and persistent human boy who works at the local diner. Tucker's easygoing personality and real interest in Clara are different from Christian's more mysterious presence, creating an unexpected pull that complicates Clara's fated path and first understanding of her purpose.
Clara's mother, Wendy, starts training Clara to improve her Nephilim abilities. This includes better senses, speed, strength, and the ability to project an 'aura' to influence humans. Clara learns about the different types of Nephilim, or 'angel-bloods,' and their various purposes. She finds out that her specific line, a Seraphim-born Nephilim, gives her a unique ability to 'read' people's emotions and intentions, and she has a strong connection to fire. This training is important for her to understand her role in the coming events and to protect herself from the dangers of being Nephilim.
As Clara gets used to Jackson Hole, her relationships with both Christian and Tucker grow deeper. Christian, at first distant, slowly opens up to Clara, sharing insights into their shared Nephilim heritage and the weight of their destinies. Their connection feels old and strong, fitting with Clara's vision. At the same time, Clara finds herself more and more drawn to Tucker. His normal life, humor, and steady affection offer a refreshing break from the difficulties of her angel blood. This creates a big inner struggle for Clara, as she tries to balance her supposed destiny with the unexpected desires of her heart, wondering if love can exist outside of fate.
Clara learns that her younger brother, Jeffrey, also a Nephilim, has a different and equally important purpose: he is a 'healer,' meant to restore balance and mend souls. During their training, Wendy reveals 'Black Wings' — rogue Nephilim who have fallen and harm others. These dangerous beings are a big threat to Nephilim like Clara and Jeffrey, especially those with strong purposes. This discovery adds urgency and danger to Clara's journey, making her understand that her destiny is not just about fulfilling a purpose, but also about survival and protecting her family from unseen enemies.
Small, seemingly accidental fires begin to happen around Jackson Hole, like in Clara's first vision. Christian and Clara investigate, believing they are connected to their purposes. During this time, Clara learns more about Christian's family history, especially the sad death of his brother, Ben, in a past fire, which greatly affected Christian and his mother. This shared trauma and the ongoing mystery of the fires bring Christian and Clara closer, strengthening their fated bond. Clara starts to suspect that the fires are not random and are somehow linked to her own destiny and Christian's past.
While on a date, Clara and Christian are attacked by Black Wings who try to kidnap Christian. Clara uses her new powers, including her special connection to fire, to fight them off, saving Christian. During the fight, Tucker Avery, who had followed Clara out of worry, sees a glimpse of Clara's supernatural abilities. Though he doesn't fully understand what he saw, it leaves him shaken and confused, forcing Clara to consider the dangerous effects of her secret being known to a human she cares for deeply. This event increases the threat and pushes Clara further into her Nephilim identity.
After the attack and Tucker's partial discovery, Clara realizes the great danger her world poses to him. She makes the hard choice to break up with Tucker, making up a reason to push him away, hoping to protect him from the Black Wings and the conflicts of her destiny. This choice hurts Clara, as she truly cares for Tucker, but she believes it is the only way to keep him safe. The breakup highlights the sacrifices she must make as a Nephilim and the isolation that comes with her powers and purpose.
The forest fire from Clara's vision finally starts, burning through the Teton mountains. This large fire is not accidental; a powerful Black Wing named Fenris plans it to use the fire's energy for his own dark goals. Clara, Christian, and Jeffrey, guided by Wendy, confront Fenris. During the difficult battle, Clara fully uses her Seraphim-born power, controlling fire to fight Fenris. Her purpose is clear: to stop Fenris and prevent him from using the fire to destroy the balance between worlds.
In a final fight, Clara defeats Fenris, using a huge amount of fire energy to overpower him. However, victory has a cost. The effort of using such strong magic leaves Clara weak and changes her in subtle ways. Christian is also greatly affected by the battle, and Jeffrey uses his healing abilities to help the injured. While the immediate danger is gone, Clara is left with the lasting effects of her actions, a deeper understanding of her power, and the knowledge that her journey is far from over. The ending suggests future challenges and the complex choices she will continue to face.

The main struggle of the novel is Clara's attempt to balance her predetermined 'purpose' as a Nephilim with her personal wishes and choices. Her visions and her mother's advice constantly push her toward a fated path with Christian, but her heart is drawn to the human Tucker, who represents a life of free choice. This theme appears in her painful decision to break up with Tucker to protect him, sacrificing her own happiness for what she believes is her duty. The book looks at whether true love can exist outside of a fated connection or if destiny is something you cannot escape.
“What if my purpose wasn't to fall in love with Christian? What if it was to save him? Or to save someone else entirely?”
Clara's Nephilim abilities bring great power but also a heavy need for responsibility and secrecy. She must hide her true nature from the human world, especially from Tucker, to protect herself and those she cares about. This secrecy leads to loneliness and difficult choices, such as lying to Tucker and distancing herself from him. The constant threat of being discovered or attacked by Black Wings shows the dangerous results of her power, forcing her to grow up fast and understand the sacrifices needed to use such abilities. The fear of hurting others with her powers is always present.
“Being powerful wasn't just about what you could do, it was about what you couldn't, or shouldn't, do.”
Love in 'Unearthly' often involves sacrifice. Clara's love for Tucker makes her push him away, believing it is the only way to keep him safe from her world's dangers. This selfless act shows the hard choices that come with her Nephilim life. Similarly, her mother, Wendy, has made many sacrifices for her family's safety and to ensure Clara fulfills her purpose. The novel suggests that true love, whether fated or chosen, often requires significant personal cost and the willingness to put another's well-being first, even if it means heartbreak.
“Sometimes, the hardest thing you could do was let go, even when you didn't want to.”
Clara struggles with her identity throughout the book, feeling caught between her human side and her Nephilim background. She tries to understand who she is now that she knows she is not fully human. Moving to Jackson Hole, a place chosen by her purpose, further emphasizes her feeling of being an outsider. Her relationships with Christian (who understands her Nephilim side) and Tucker (who represents her human desires) show this inner conflict. She looks for a sense of belonging in a world where she is different, finally finding it by accepting her unique identity and purpose.
“I was an angel-blood, but I was also just Clara. And I didn't know how to be both.”
Precognitive insights into future events and key individuals.
Clara's visions serve as a primary plot device, initiating the entire narrative. Her initial vision of the forest fire and Christian Prescott drives her family's move to Jackson Hole and sets her on the path to discovering her purpose. Throughout the story, her visions provide crucial foreshadowing, hint at dangers, and guide her actions, reinforcing the theme of destiny. They act as a constant reminder of her fated path and the impending events she must face.
A romantic conflict between the fated love and the unexpected human connection.
The love triangle between Clara, Christian, and Tucker is a central plot device that fuels much of Clara's internal conflict and emotional journey. Christian represents her destiny and supernatural world, while Tucker embodies normalcy and human connection. This dynamic creates tension, forces Clara to make difficult choices, and explores the themes of destiny vs. free will and love vs. duty. It adds emotional depth and personal stakes to her larger supernatural quest.
A predetermined mission or destiny for each Nephilim.
The concept of 'purpose' is fundamental to the Nephilim world and drives the main plot. Each Nephilim is born with a specific mission they are destined to fulfill. Clara's entire journey is about discovering and enacting her purpose, which involves stopping Fenris and controlling the forest fire. This device provides a clear narrative goal and framework for the characters' actions, while also creating the central conflict around accepting or defying one's fate.
Rogue Nephilim who embody evil and pose a threat.
The Black Wings serve as the primary antagonists and a constant source of external conflict and danger. Their existence highlights the darker side of the Nephilim world and the consequences of falling from grace. They are the physical manifestation of the threats Clara and her family face, directly attacking them and orchestrating the climactic forest fire. This device raises the stakes and provides clear obstacles for Clara to overcome, pushing her to develop her powers.
