A girl raised by a robot in an underground bunker goes on a dangerous journey through an alien world to find other humans and learn about her past.
Eva Nine, a twelve-year-old girl, lives in an underground bunker called Sanctuary, raised by a robot named Muthr. She spends her days learning about the outside world, which she wants to see, and with her small, insect-like pet, Rovender. One day, a large creature with glowing eyes breaks into Sanctuary, destroying it and hurting Muthr. Before Muthr shuts down, she says the creature, a 'sand ripper,' was after Eva. Eva is given a small device and told to find others like her. With Sanctuary destroyed, Eva must go to the surface, a world she has only seen in pictures.
On the surface, Eva finds herself in a strange, alien place. She soon meets a grumpy, four-armed alien named Rovender Kitt, who at first tries to avoid her. Eva's device, an 'Omni-Pod,' translates Rovender's language, allowing them to talk. Rovender, a former poacher, does not want to help but eventually lets Eva follow him. Soon after, they meet Otto, a large, gentle alien with one eye, who is a former 'security guard.' Otto immediately likes Eva and promises to protect her, forming an unlikely group as they start their journey across the new world.
Eva, Rovender, and Otto travel through different environments, meeting various alien plants and animals. They often rely on Rovender's knowledge and Otto's strength. Eva uses her Omni-Pod to learn about the different species and places. Their journey takes them to the busy, high-tech city of Machina, which is full of robots. Eva thinks she might find answers about other humans there, using the vague images she has from Sanctuary. However, the city's inhabitants are not helpful, and the group realizes that Machina is not where they will find what they are looking for, though they learn more about the world's geography.
Using a map Eva found in Sanctuary, the group heads toward a place marked 'WondLa,' believing it might help them find other humans. Their path goes through the Crystal Desert, a dangerous area with sharp ground and a harsh environment. They encounter dangerous creatures and face hunger and thirst. During this part of their journey, Eva's determination and cleverness are tested, and her bond with Rovender and Otto grows stronger. Rovender, despite his complaints, shows more concern for Eva's safety, and Otto remains a loyal protector.
In the Crystal Desert, Eva's Omni-Pod picks up a signal, leading them to a cave where they find a creature that looks like a human child, but much larger and covered in fur. This creature, a 'humanoid' called Besteel, is friendly at first but quickly becomes hostile, showing itself to be the same species that attacked Sanctuary. Besteel is a dangerous hunter, and it becomes clear that it is specifically hunting Eva. A fierce fight happens, with Rovender and Otto fighting to protect Eva. The encounter is terrifying, and Eva realizes the true danger of her situation and the constant pursuit by these creatures.
Following another clue from Eva's Omni-Pod, the group looks for an old, respected oracle hidden deep in a jungle. The oracle, a large, ancient plant-like being, communicates through mysterious visions and riddles. It reveals that Eva is indeed a human, a species thought to be gone from this planet, and that 'WondLa' is not a place but a destiny. The oracle also hints at a prophecy about Eva's arrival and the chance for humans to return, but also warns of a great danger following her. This meeting confirms Eva's unique importance and the seriousness of her quest.
The group travels to the City of Ribbons, a beautiful, unique city made of woven, living plants that floats in the sky. Here, they find a temporary break from their difficult journey and the constant threat of Besteel. Eva learns more about the different cultures of the planet, Orbona. However, their peace does not last long as Besteel, still tracking Eva, manages to get into the city. The chase through the complex, aerial paths of the City of Ribbons is intense, showing Besteel's cleverness and determination to catch Eva. The group is forced to run again, realizing they can never truly rest.
As Besteel gets closer, Rovender, feeling overwhelmed and worried for Eva's safety, makes a hard choice. He tries to create a diversion, hoping to lure Besteel away, but his plan fails. Besteel corners Eva and Otto, revealing more about its reasons and the group behind it. It becomes clear that Besteel is not just a random hunter, but part of a larger, organized effort to capture Eva. Rovender, seeing the danger, rejoins the fight, battling fiercely alongside Otto to protect Eva. The battle is brutal, and the group barely escapes, strengthening their bond through shared danger.
Following clues from her Omni-Pod and the oracle's prophecy, Eva finally discovers the truth about Sanctuary. It was not just a bunker, but a carefully designed home, an ark meant to preserve the last human on Orbona. Eva learns that she is the last surviving human, placed in Sanctuary for her protection. The 'sand rippers' are not just creatures but agents of a powerful entity that wants to keep humans from returning to Orbona. This discovery is a big shock to Eva, making her quest even more important and dangerous, as she now carries the future of her entire species.
Eva's Omni-Pod finally leads her to a hidden, secluded valley, where she finds what looks like a human settlement. Her excitement is huge, but it quickly turns to confusion and then disappointment. The settlement is indeed human, but it is small, isolated, and its inhabitants are cautious and distrustful. They have lived in hiding for generations, afraid of the outside world and the creatures that hunt them. Eva realizes that finding humans is not the end of her journey, but the start of a new, complex challenge: uniting and inspiring her own kind to reclaim their place on Orbona.
Eva is brought before Cadmus, the stern and careful leader of the hidden human settlement. Cadmus explains their history of fear and persecution, revealing that the 'sand rippers' (which he calls 'Bestiel') have hunted humans to almost extinction. He is doubtful of Eva's arrival and her wish to reconnect with the outside world, believing it too dangerous. Eva, however, sees his fear as a barrier to their survival. She tries to convince him that hiding forever is not a solution and that they must find a way to thrive, not just survive, on Orbona, creating a conflict of ideas.
Despite Cadmus's doubts, Eva's courage and determination start to inspire some of the younger humans in the settlement. She shares her experiences of the outside world, describing a lively, though dangerous, planet. Eva understands that 'WondLa' is not a physical place but a vision of a future where humans can live together and do well on Orbona. She accepts her role as a link between the hidden past and an uncertain future, promising to help her people find their place in the world. The story ends with Eva, Rovender, and Otto getting ready for the next part of their journey, now with a clear goal to lead the humans out of hiding.

The Supporting
Cadmus's arc is one of initial resistance to Eva's ideals, slowly beginning to consider the possibility of a different future for his people.
The Supporting
The Oracle's role is primarily to provide exposition and prophecy, guiding Eva's understanding of her purpose.
Eva Nine's whole journey is driven by her search for other humans, which is tied to her search for her own identity. Having never met another human, she struggles to understand who she is and where she belongs. Her Omni-Pod, full of human images, symbolizes her longing. When she finally finds the hidden human settlement, she realizes that belonging is not just about finding others, but about building a future together, embracing her unique role in leading them. This theme is central to Eva's personal growth and her understanding of her place in the vast universe of Orbona.
“What if I can't find them? What if there are no more?”
Eva is thrown into a world she has only seen in simulations, a world full of alien life, dangers, and mysteries. Despite her fear and loneliness, she consistently chooses to move forward, driven by her goal. Her courage is clear in her willingness to trust Rovender and Otto, to enter the busy city of Machina, and to face the terrifying Besteel. This theme shows that bravery is not the absence of fear, but the decision to act despite it, constantly adapting to new challenges and environments on Orbona.
“The world was bigger, stranger, and more dangerous than she could have ever imagined. But it was also beautiful.”
Eva's journey would be impossible without the loyal friendship of Rovender and Otto. Their unlikely group, made up of a human, a grumpy alien, and a gentle giant, shows the power of friendship across species. Rovender, at first unwilling, becomes fiercely protective, and Otto's steady loyalty is a constant source of comfort and strength. Their shared experiences and support help them overcome seemingly impossible obstacles, proving that true family can be found in unexpected places. This bond is tested but ultimately strengthened through shared danger, especially during fights with Besteel.
“She was not alone. She had friends. And that was more than enough.”
The book explores humanity's role and effect on a lively, alien ecosystem. Humans are shown as a species that once ruled but is now almost extinct, forced to hide. Eva's journey makes her face the realities of a world where humans are not at the top of the food chain, or even welcome. The theme questions whether humanity can learn to live together and thrive within a complex natural environment rather than trying to control it. Her ultimate goal becomes not just finding humans, but finding a way for them to live in harmony on Orbona, suggesting a more modest and integrated existence.
“You are not from this world, little human. But you are of it now.”
Both Eva's early life in Sanctuary and the hidden human settlement she eventually finds show the good and bad sides of isolation. While Sanctuary protected Eva, it also kept her from connection and understanding. The hidden human settlement, led by Cadmus, lives in fear, choosing to hide rather than face the dangers of Orbona. This fear, while understandable, has led to a lack of progress and hope. Eva's arrival challenges this way of thinking, suggesting that while isolation can offer temporary safety, it ultimately stops growth and the chance for a better future. The theme emphasizes that true survival often requires the courage to move past fear.
“Hiding will not save us forever. We must live.”
A multi-functional device that translates languages and provides information.
The Omni-Pod is a small, handheld device given to Eva by Muthr before Sanctuary's destruction. It functions as a universal translator, allowing Eva to understand the various alien languages on Orbona. Crucially, it also contains a database of information about the planet's flora, fauna, and geography, as well as images of humans, which guide Eva's quest. The Omni-Pod serves as Eva's primary tool for survival, learning, and navigation, acting as a link to her past and a guide to her future, often providing the clues that propel the plot forward.
A cryptic destiny that drives Eva's journey.
The concept of 'WondLa' is introduced early in the story as a mysterious destination Eva must find to locate other humans. It functions as a MacGuffin, giving Eva a tangible goal to pursue. However, as the story progresses, particularly through the Oracle's revelations, 'WondLa' is revealed to be more than just a place. It transforms into a prophecy or a state of being, representing Eva's destiny to reunite and lead humanity. This evolution of the 'WondLa' concept gives the narrative a deeper, more symbolic meaning beyond a simple treasure hunt.
A relentless antagonist that provides constant external conflict.
Besteel, the 'sand ripper' species, particularly the individual hunting Eva, serves as the primary external antagonist throughout the narrative. Its relentless pursuit creates constant tension and danger, forcing Eva and her companions to remain vigilant and resourceful. The hunter's presence not only drives the plot forward through chases and confrontations but also underscores the severe threat to humanity's existence on Orbona. Besteel embodies the external forces that seek to prevent Eva from achieving her goal, representing a tangible and terrifying obstacle.
Eva's subterranean home, a symbol of protection and isolation.
Sanctuary is Eva's underground home, a technologically advanced bunker designed to protect her from the outside world. It serves as Eva's entire known world at the beginning of the story, symbolizing safety, nurture, and isolation. Its destruction is the inciting incident that forces Eva into the unknown. Later, the revelation of Sanctuary's true purpose as an ark for the last human adds depth to its symbolic meaning, highlighting the desperate measures taken to preserve humanity and setting the stage for Eva's larger destiny.
