Betrayed and fueled by darkness, a young woman known as the White Wolf forms an army of supernaturally gifted outcasts, battling her former allies and her own descent into villainy to get revenge on those who wronged her.
Adelina Amouteru, now the White Wolf, has left Kenettra after bringing down the Dagger Society. She travels with her sister, Violetta, to Merai, specifically the port city of Estenzia, looking for other Young Elites marked by the blood fever. Adelina's main goal is to build an army to fight the Inquisition Axis, led by Teren Santoro, whom she blames for her past suffering and the persecution of Elites. Violetta, whose own whisperer abilities are growing, worries more and more about Adelina's deepening darkness and her powers, which feed on fear and hatred. Adelina's mind is fragile, troubled by visions of her dead father and the constant whispers of her power.
In Estenzia, Adelina and Violetta meet Maeve, a strong Illusionist who controls the city's criminal underworld. Adelina, showing her own powerful illusionary skills and ruthlessness, convinces Maeve to join her. They then go to the Northern Star, a floating city, where they recruit other strong Young Elites: Magiano, a charming and skilled fire user and thief; and Sergio, a healer who works with plants. Adelina names her new group the Rose Society, directly opposing the Dagger Society, with herself as leader. Her leadership style is more controlling and based on fear than Enzo's was, and she struggles to gain the real trust and loyalty of her new recruits, always suspicious of their true intentions.
Meanwhile, Raffaele, the Dagger Society's leader after Enzo's death, feels guilty about his part in Adelina's betrayal. He, along with the remaining Daggers — Gemma, Michel, and Dante — track Adelina. They know about her growing power and dangerous path, believing she is a threat to both the Inquisition and the Elites. Their goal is not to kill Adelina but to capture her and find a way to stop her before her destructive ambitions cause widespread chaos and further persecution of all Young Elites. They fear her power, especially her ability to control minds with fear, is getting out of hand.
Teren Santoro, the Grand Inquisitor, is still recovering from the events in Kenettra and his personal failures. His obsession with ridding the world of Young Elites, especially Adelina, grows. He believes Adelina is a demon, a sign of the blood fever's evil, and will stop at nothing to capture and execute her. He uses his large network of spies and his own brutal methods to track the White Wolf and her new Rose Society. Teren's personal pain, fueled by his love for the dead Queen Giulietta and his religious passion, makes him a strong and unpredictable enemy, willing to sacrifice anything to reach his goals.
Adelina leads her Rose Society through the desert, trying to reach a hidden base. During their journey, Inquisition soldiers led by Teren ambush them. The battle is fierce, and Adelina's command is tested. She uses her fear-inducing illusions effectively, making soldiers turn on each other, but her methods are brutal and terrifying even to her own allies. Maeve and Magiano fight bravely, but the sheer number of Inquisition soldiers proves difficult. Violetta, seeing the extent of Adelina's power and her willingness to create terror, becomes more and more disturbed by her sister's change, wondering if Adelina is truly fighting for justice or just for revenge.
As Adelina continues to lead the Rose Society, her powers of illusion and fear manipulation become much stronger. She can now project her illusions over large areas and control many minds at once. However, this increased power comes at a high cost. Her hallucinations worsen, her grip on reality weakens, and she becomes increasingly paranoid, suspecting betrayal from everyone, including Violetta. The whispers of her power, which she sees as a dark entity, grow louder, pushing her toward more ruthless and violent actions. She struggles to tell the difference between real threats and her own fear-driven delusions, making her an unpredictable and dangerous leader.
Facing a common enemy in the Inquisition, Adelina and Raffaele are forced into an uneasy alliance. Raffaele and the Daggers intercept Adelina's group, and after a tense talk, they agree to work together against Teren and the Inquisition Axis, who are gathering their forces for a major attack. Adelina, though appearing cooperative, remains deeply suspicious of Raffaele and his reasons, remembering his past betrayal. Raffaele, in turn, is careful of Adelina's unstable nature and uncontrolled power. This alliance is purely for strategy, filled with mistrust, and always on the verge of falling apart, showing the deep divides within the Elite community.
The combined forces of the Rose and Dagger Societies attack a major Inquisition stronghold, a fortified temple. The battle is massive, with Elites using their full powers against the heavily armed Inquisition soldiers. Adelina's illusions create chaos and terror among the enemy, while Magiano's fire, Gemma's strength, and Raffaele's elemental control destroy their forces. Teren, leading the Inquisition, fights with desperate intensity, driven by his fanaticism. During the battle, Adelina's powers surge out of control, causing her to lose herself in a storm of fear and destruction, blurring the lines between ally and enemy and frightening even her own followers.
In the chaotic aftermath of the battle, as Adelina's powers threaten to consume her and turn her against everyone, Violetta makes a desperate choice. Fearing Adelina has become too dangerous and is beyond saving, Violetta uses her whisperer abilities to strip Adelina of her powers. She believes it is the only way to stop her sister's descent into madness and prevent her from harming more people. This act is a deep betrayal for Adelina, who feels completely abandoned and powerless. Violetta, though heartbroken, believes she has made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the world and, paradoxically, her sister from herself, knowing the immense personal cost.
Without her abilities, Adelina is left vulnerable and angry. Teren captures her, but before he can execute her, Maeve and Magiano rescue her; they remain loyal despite her loss of power. Adelina, though weakened, is not broken. Her desire for revenge against Teren and the Inquisition remains, now fueled by a deeper, more personal rage. She learns Maeve's true identity as the lost Queen of the Northern Star, and together, they plan to rebuild their forces. Adelina, no longer a powerful Elite, must now rely on her cunning, her influence, and the loyalty she has inspired, as she sets her sights on a new, even grander plan to reclaim her power and get her vengeance.

This theme is central to Adelina's journey. As her illusion and fear manipulation powers grow, she becomes more ruthless, paranoid, and detached from her humanity. Her abilities, fueled by negative emotions, warp her perception and push her toward tyrannical leadership. She uses her illusions to make Inquisition soldiers turn on each other in the desert, a brutal act that even unnerves her allies. Her mental state worsens with each surge of power, showing how unchecked power can destroy one's soul.
“My power is a cruel mistress. It whispers to me of hatred and revenge, and I listen.”
Adelina's quest starts as a search for justice against the Inquisition for their persecution of Elites. However, her actions quickly become a personal vendetta, driven by a desire for revenge against those who betrayed her. This contrasts with Raffaele's more measured approach, who aims to protect Elites and create a more just world. Adelina's willingness to create terror and manipulate others, as when she forces Maeve to join her, shows her prioritizing personal retribution over any broader sense of justice, blurring the lines between hero and villain.
“Justice is a luxury I cannot afford. I want vengeance.”
Adelina's past betrayals by her family and the Dagger Society leave her deeply scarred and unable to trust anyone. This paranoia affects her interactions with her new Rose Society, making real connection impossible. She constantly suspects her allies of hidden motives, and her distrust ultimately leads her sister, Violetta, to betray her for her own good. The fragile alliance between the Rose and Dagger Societies constantly highlights the lingering wounds of past betrayals, with every interaction filled with suspicion.
“Once, I had friends. Once, I had a family. They all betrayed me.”
The novel explores whether evil is inborn or a result of circumstances. Adelina's descent into darkness, fueled by trauma and betrayal, suggests the latter. Her powers, which feed on fear, amplify her negative emotions, making her question if she is inherently monstrous or simply a victim of her abilities. Teren Santoro, the Grand Inquisitor, also shows a complex view of evil, as his cruel actions come from a twisted sense of religious duty and deep grief. The story suggests that even those with good intentions can commit terrible acts, and the line between good and evil is often unclear.
“Am I a monster, or merely a reflection of the monsters who made me?”
The bond between Adelina and Violetta is a core part of the story. Despite Adelina's growing darkness, Violetta remains fiercely loyal, acting as her sister's moral guide. However, as Adelina's powers become too destructive, Violetta must make the ultimate sacrifice: stripping Adelina of her powers to save her, and the world, from her. This act, though a painful betrayal for Adelina, is portrayed as Violetta's deep act of love and selflessness, showing the deep and often difficult complexities of sisterly love.
“I will save you, Adelina. Even if it means I must destroy you.”
The catalyst for Elite powers and societal fear.
The blood fever is a magical plague that swept through Kenettra years ago, killing many and leaving a select few, the 'Young Elites,' with extraordinary powers. It serves as the origin point for all the characters' abilities and the societal prejudice they face. The fever is not just a plot device for power acquisition; it's also a source of fear and discrimination, driving the Inquisition's persecution and shaping the Elites' identities. Its after-effects are what define both Adelina's powers and Teren's fanaticism.
A manifestation of guilt, trauma, and deteriorating mental state.
Adelina frequently experiences vivid hallucinations, primarily of her deceased father and other figures from her past. These are not merely psychological quirks but a direct manifestation of her guilt, trauma, and the corrupting influence of her fear-based powers. The hallucinations blur the line between reality and delusion, signaling her descent into madness and making her an unreliable narrator. They serve to heighten the psychological tension and underscore the internal battle Adelina faces.
A mirrored organization reflecting Adelina's dark leadership.
The Rose Society is Adelina's answer to the Dagger Society, formed to counter the Inquisition. It functions as a direct mirror, highlighting Adelina's contrasting leadership style and moral compass. While the Daggers operate on trust and shared ideals, the Rose Society is built on fear, manipulation, and Adelina's absolute authority. This device allows the author to explore themes of leadership, power, and the difference between a benevolent and tyrannical force, showing Adelina's transformation into the very thing she fights against.
A moral compass and a narrative tool for insight and intervention.
Violetta's ability to 'whisper' into minds, sensing and subtly influencing thoughts, serves multiple plot functions. It provides insight into other characters' true intentions, making her Adelina's most trusted (and feared) confidante. More critically, her power acts as a moral compass, allowing her to understand the depths of Adelina's darkness and ultimately providing the means for her to intervene. Her unique ability to strip Adelina of her powers becomes the pivotal plot device for the climax and resolution of Adelina's immediate threat.
