During the French Revolution, a telepathic Gypsy boy skilled in illusion must save the lonely heiress he loves from a wicked count.
In Paris, winter 1789, the talented Gypsy boy Yann Margoza works as an assistant to the magician, Topolain. Yann has a gift for reading thoughts and ventriloquism, which he uses to improve Topolain's shows. On the night of their final performance at the Comédie Française, Yann meets thirteen-year-old Sido, a lonely heiress with her cold father, the Marquis de Salignac. During a brief moment, Sido loses a pearl from her necklace, which Yann finds for her. This small act of kindness creates an instant connection between them, despite their different social classes and the coming French Revolution.
After the magician's final show, Yann is without a master. Meanwhile, Sido's life darkens. Her father, the Marquis de Salignac, owes a lot of money to the mysterious and evil Count Kalliovski, rumored to be a sorcerer. To pay the debt, Kalliovski demands Sido's hand in marriage, despite her young age and his terrible reputation. The Marquis, desperate and afraid, agrees, effectively selling his daughter into a terrible union. Sido is horrified and helpless, realizing she is a pawn in a dangerous game controlled by powerful, ruthless men.
After Topolain leaves, Yann is taken in by Tetu, a kind dwarf who was also part of the magician's group. Tetu becomes a mentor to Yann, teaching him about the world and helping him develop his unique talents. Through his ability to read thoughts, Yann senses the great danger around Sido and Count Kalliovski's dark intentions. He feels a strong urge to protect her, a silent promise that solidifies his purpose. Yann begins to improve his skills, knowing he will need all his intelligence and abilities to stand against such a strong enemy and save Sido from a terrible fate.
Political tension in Paris quickly grows, leading to the storming of the Bastille. This violent act marks the true beginning of the French Revolution, a time of great upheaval and bloodshed that will change France forever. The revolution's chaos creates a volatile background for Yann and Sido's personal struggles. As violence erupts in the streets and society crumbles, Yann must navigate this dangerous new world to reach Sido. The revolution offers both danger and opportunity, as the old order's collapse might free Sido from her forced engagement, but also exposes her to new, equally dangerous threats.
Count Kalliovski's evil nature is gradually revealed as more than just human cruelty; he has dark, magical abilities. He is obsessed with Sido, not just for her wealth or status, but for a deeper, mystical reason connected to a legendary red necklace. This necklace, passed down through Sido's family, has powerful magic, and Kalliovski believes owning Sido, and thus the necklace, will give him ultimate power or immortality. His plans become increasingly supernatural, posing a threat that goes beyond normal human conflict and forcing Yann to confront a truly evil force.
Driven by his strong desire to save Sido, Yann begins a dangerous journey through revolutionary Paris. He uses his ventriloquism and thought-reading to gather information, avoid danger, and navigate the increasingly chaotic city. He meets various characters, some helpful, others dangerous, all of whom help him sharpen his skills and deepen his understanding of the world. His quest is not just physical; it is a journey of self-discovery, as he learns to control and use his unique gifts for a noble purpose. Yann's resourcefulness and courage grow with each challenge he faces.
Sido is a prisoner in her own home, constantly watched by the terrifying Count Kalliovski. He torments her psychologically, trying to break her spirit and make her obey him. Despite her fear and loneliness, Sido shows remarkable resilience. She holds onto the memory of her brief meeting with Yann, finding strength in the hope that he might come for her. She secretly resists Kalliovski's control, trying to understand his motives and find ways to stop his plans, even in her vulnerable state. Her inner strength becomes a quiet rebellion against her oppressor.
Yann, helped by Tetu and a few trusted allies, plans to enter Count Kalliovski's heavily guarded chateau. The chateau, a place of dark secrets and ancient magic, is Kalliovski's fortress. The infiltration is full of danger, as Kalliovski's power extends throughout his domain. Yann uses his ventriloquism and sharp observation skills to bypass guards and avoid traps, while Tetu's wisdom and resourcefulness prove very helpful. Their mission is not just a rescue; it is a direct challenge to Kalliovski's authority and a race against time before Sido is lost forever to his dark plans.
The story's climax unfolds as Yann confronts Count Kalliovski in a dramatic and dangerous magical duel. Kalliovski reveals the full extent of his dark powers, using illusions and ancient sorcery against Yann. Yann, however, counters with his unique gifts of ventriloquism, thought-reading, and his courage, using misdirection and psychological tactics to outwit the Count. The red necklace plays a key role in the confrontation, its power either sought by Kalliovski or used against him. Ultimately, Yann, through his natural abilities, quick thinking, and a stroke of luck, defeats Kalliovski, breaking his hold over Sido and the land.
With Count Kalliovski defeated, Sido is finally free from his terrible grasp. The immediate danger is gone, but the world outside remains in chaos due to the ongoing French Revolution. Yann and Sido, having faced great challenges together, now have the chance to build a new life. Their bond, formed in adversity, deepens into a strong connection. While the future is uncertain and full of the dangers of revolutionary France, their shared experiences and mutual affection offer hope and a promise of a future together, free from Kalliovski's tyranny.
Even after Kalliovski's defeat, the French Revolution continues, affecting France deeply. The political situation remains unstable, with growing violence and paranoia. Yann and Sido, having found comfort in each other, must navigate this dangerous new world. They witness brutal executions and the constant threat of being caught in the revolutionary fervor. Their survival depends on their ability to adapt, to stay hidden, and to trust each other amid the chaos. The revolution constantly reminds them of how fragile life is and the need for vigilance and resilience.
As their personal battle ends, Yann and Sido begin to create a new life. They find refuge and a sense of belonging with Tetu and the other members of the former troupe, who have become their chosen family. Their relationship grows, built on mutual respect, understanding, and the shared ordeal they endured. While the scars of the past and the uncertainty of the revolution remain, they find strength in their bond. They look towards the future, not with blind hope, but with a quiet determination to build a life together, finding happiness and peace in a world still changing.

The main theme is the strong, selfless love that develops between Yann and Sido. Yann's entire quest is driven by his love for Sido, leading him to make great sacrifices and face dangers, including confronting a powerful sorcerer. Sido, in turn, finds the strength to endure her torment through her hope for Yann and her growing feelings for him. Their love overcomes social barriers and becomes a source of hope against personal tyranny and societal upheaval, as seen when Yann risks his life repeatedly to save her from Kalliovski's chateau.
“He knew, with a certainty that reached into his bones, that he would do anything, face any terror, to save her.”
This theme explores the power of abilities that are not immediately obvious or understood, both magical and personal. Yann's gifts of thought-reading and ventriloquism are central, allowing him to see hidden truths and manipulate situations. These 'unseen' powers are important in his fight against Kalliovski's dark magic. Similarly, Sido's inner strength and resilience, though initially hidden, are vital in enduring her captivity and resisting Kalliovski's psychological torment. The story shows that true power comes not just from force, but from intelligence, perception, and a strong spirit, as when Yann uses his ventriloquism to create diversions during the chateau infiltration.
“The greatest magic, Yann often thought, was not in what you saw, but in what you believed you saw.”
Set during the French Revolution, the novel shows themes of social injustice, class differences, and revolutionary passion. Sido's situation as an heiress sold to pay a debt highlights the vulnerability of women and the power dynamics of the aristocracy. Yann, as a Gypsy, faces prejudice and lives on the edges of society, giving him a unique view of the injustices of the old regime. The storming of the Bastille and the resulting chaos underscore the widespread unhappiness and the violent struggle for equality, directly affecting the characters' lives and choices, creating both problems and chances for Yann and Sido.
“The old world was crumbling, and in its ruins, a new one, equally dangerous, was being born.”
The story clearly shows a contrast between good and evil, personified by Yann and Count Kalliovski. Kalliovski represents pure evil, driven by selfish desires for power and control through dark magic. Yann, on the other hand, represents selflessness, courage, and a commitment to protecting the innocent. This theme is explored through their direct conflict, which is not just physical but also a battle of wills and moral principles. The narrative reinforces the idea that even in the darkest times, and against seemingly unbeatable evil, goodness can win through determination and a pure heart, ending in their final, magical confrontation.
“Some men are merely cruel; others are touched by true darkness.”
The novel subtly explores the interaction between destiny and free will. The red necklace, with its ancient magic, suggests a predetermined path for Sido, linking her to a powerful, perhaps fated, role. Kalliovski's obsession implies a belief in a destiny he wishes to control. However, Yann's actions, driven by his choices and love, consistently challenge and ultimately change what might have been Sido's predetermined fate. The characters' decisions, particularly Yann's strong resolve to save Sido, show that while circumstances may be fated, individuals have the free will to defy and reshape their own destinies, making their own choices against the backdrop of historical events.
“Perhaps some paths are laid out, but it is our feet that choose where to walk.”
A magical artifact symbolizing Sido's heritage and Kalliovski's obsession.
The red necklace is a pivotal magical artifact passed down through Sido's family. It symbolizes her lineage and becomes the object of Count Kalliovski's sinister obsession, who believes it holds immense power or is crucial to his dark rituals. Its presence elevates the conflict beyond mere human intrigue to a magical struggle. The necklace acts as both a lure for the antagonist and a potential key to understanding or defeating him, driving much of the plot's supernatural elements.
Supernatural abilities that serve as both a survival tool and a weapon.
Yann's unique gifts are central to his character and plot progression. His ventriloquism allows him to create diversions, confuse enemies, and even project his voice into Sido's mind, providing comfort. His thought-reading ability provides crucial insights into characters' true intentions, exposing deceit and danger. These abilities are not merely parlor tricks but vital tools for survival, espionage, and ultimately, combat against Kalliovski's magic, making him a formidable, unconventional hero against a magical foe.
A historical event providing both chaos and opportunity for the narrative.
The French Revolution serves as more than just a setting; it's a dynamic plot device. The societal upheaval, violence, and breakdown of old orders create a chaotic environment that both hinders and aids the protagonists. It provides cover for Yann's clandestine activities, allows for the collapse of the Marquis's power, and creates a sense of urgency and danger. The revolution's unpredictability constantly shifts the stakes and challenges the characters to adapt, reflecting the personal turmoil with the grander historical drama.
Yann's mysterious origins and Sido's vulnerable status as an heiress.
Yann's Gypsy background and lack of a traditional family, coupled with Sido's isolation despite her wealth, evoke elements of the orphan/lost heir trope. Yann's mysterious past hints at a deeper destiny, while Sido's vulnerability as an heiress makes her a target. This device emphasizes their individual struggles for identity and belonging, and their eventual bond forms a new, chosen family, providing a powerful emotional core to the adventure and highlighting the idea that family is not always blood.
