On the world of Ibara, Bobby Pendragon finds a secret that keeps its people unaware, while Saint Dane prepares his final attack, forcing Courtney to find a corrupted Mark and prevent disaster.
Bobby Pendragon, a Traveler, arrives on Ibara, a tropical world. Elli, the local Traveler, greets him. She is a young woman who seems more interested in enjoying the island's beauty than in any immediate threat. The people of Ibara, called the Iban, live in a state of calm. They seem free from worry or conflict. However, Bobby quickly notices something unsettling: the Iban do not know anything beyond their immediate area and show no interest in their world's past or future. This calm makes Bobby suspicious, as it does not seem normal for a healthy society and gives Saint Dane a good chance to manipulate the territory.
On Second Earth, Courtney Chetwynde is dealing with a personal tragedy: her father's death in a car accident. After this, Mark Diamond, her best friend and fellow acolyte, has disappeared. Courtney is worried, knowing that Mark, already struggling with feelings of not being good enough and wanting a greater purpose, is now very open to Saint Dane's influence. She thinks Saint Dane might be manipulating Mark, tempting him with promises of power or a way to make a difference. She fears he could be led to make a bad mistake that would have serious results for Halla. Courtney tries to find Mark before it is too late.
As Bobby investigates Ibara, he learns about the 'Pilgrims of Rayne,' a historical event involving the Iban traveling to a sacred mountain called Rayne. He discovers that the Iban periodically 'forget' their past, which explains their current calm. This tradition, seemingly meant to keep them peaceful, has also erased important historical knowledge, including the true nature of their planet and its threats. Elli, even as a Traveler, seems to have been affected by this cultural memory loss, at first downplaying the importance of these rituals and the true dangers on Ibara.
Saint Dane appears, revealing his plan for Ibara. He plans to use the planet's core, which is a large, unstable energy source. He intends to speed up the natural energy release, causing a huge explosion that would destroy Ibara and send a ripple effect through Halla, making territories unstable and creating chaos. He has been subtly influencing the Iban's rituals, making sure they remain unaware, thus keeping them from understanding or stopping the coming disaster. Saint Dane taunts Bobby, confident that the Iban's chosen path of forgetting will lead to their end and his victory.
Courtney eventually finds Mark in a lonely, isolated place. He is in deep despair, overwhelmed by his father's death and a feeling of helplessness. Saint Dane appears to Mark, using his weaknesses. He offers Mark a chance to truly make a difference, to have power no normal human could understand, and to escape the pain and normalness of his current life. Saint Dane suggests that Mark could become a new kind of Traveler, one who can shape reality, if he chooses to join him. Mark, desperate for purpose and a way to control his own future, is very tempted by this dark offer.
With Elli's help, Bobby learns more about Ibara's history, finding old texts and forgotten records that show the true nature of the Pilgrims of Rayne. He learns that the Iban's ancestors knew about the planet's unstable core and its potential for disaster. The pilgrimages and 'forgetting' rituals were originally meant not for calm, but as a way to regularly reset and stabilize the core's energy, a dangerous task. However, over generations, the true purpose was lost, and the rituals became just traditions, leaving the planet open to an uncontrolled energy release.
Courtney confronts Mark, asking him to resist Saint Dane. She reminds him of their friendship, their shared values, and the importance of fighting for good, not against it. She understands his pain and his desire for importance but warns him that joining Saint Dane would lead to an irreversible path of destruction and regret. Saint Dane, present during their confrontation, mocks Courtney and continues to tempt Mark, pointing out her perceived weakness and his own greater power. Mark is torn between the appeal of power and the familiar voice of his conscience and his friend.
Bobby and Elli realize they must re-learn and perform the old, forgotten ritual to stabilize Ibara's core. This means a dangerous journey to the heart of Rayne mountain, where the core's energy can be controlled. They face many challenges, including the mountain's natural defenses and Saint Dane's attempts to stop them. The ritual needs exact timing and a deep understanding of Ibara's energy flows. Bobby understands that failure means not only losing Ibara but a big blow to the balance of Halla, possibly giving Saint Dane too much power.
As Bobby and Elli are about to finish the stabilization ritual, Saint Dane makes one last attempt to stop them. At the same time, Mark, influenced by Courtney's emotional plea and his own conscience, makes his choice. He rejects Saint Dane's offer, refusing to become a tool of chaos. His decision, while not directly affecting Ibara, is a moral victory against Saint Dane's influence. Bobby and Elli, with new determination, successfully complete the old ritual, stabilizing Ibara's core and stopping the explosion, thus saving the territory and preventing Saint Dane's plan.
Ibara is saved, its core stable, though the Iban mostly do not know about the near disaster. Bobby thinks about the dangers of not knowing and the importance of understanding history. Saint Dane, though stopped, escapes, vowing to continue his fight for chaos. Mark, having rejected Saint Dane, is safe but deeply shaken by his near fall into darkness. Courtney stays by his side, helping him begin the long process of healing and finding his purpose without Saint Dane's bad influence. The Travelers know that the fight for Halla is far from over, and Saint Dane will attack again.

The Mentioned
Not applicable; a historical figure whose wisdom is rediscovered.
The main theme is the Iban's choice to live in calm, which, while seeming peaceful, leaves them open to disaster. Their ritual of 'forgetting' history, meant to keep peace, eventually removes the knowledge needed for their survival. Saint Dane uses this calm, showing how not wanting to face difficult truths can lead to destruction. Bobby's struggle to make the Iban understand their danger highlights the importance of awareness and seeking knowledge, even when it is hard. This is clear when Bobby first arrives and sees the Iban's lack of curiosity.
“A world that chooses to forget its past is doomed to repeat its mistakes, or worse, to be consumed by them.”
This theme is shown through Mark Diamond's struggle. Overwhelmed by grief and feeling helpless after his father's death, Mark becomes open to Saint Dane's promises of power and control. Saint Dane uses his despair, offering him an escape from pain and a chance to make a big impact, though through destructive means. Mark's near-fall shows how personal tragedy and feelings of not being good enough can make people open to manipulation, and how the desire for control can be twisted into seeking dark power. Courtney's efforts to help him highlight the importance of hope and friendship in overcoming despair.
“When you have nothing left to lose, power can seem like the only thing worth gaining.”
The conflict between accepting responsibilities and wanting to avoid them is explored through both the Iban and Elli. The Iban's 'forgetting' is a way for society to escape the harsh realities of their planet's instability. Elli, at first, seems to have adopted this carefree attitude, downplaying her role as a Traveler. Bobby, in contrast, constantly carries the heavy burden of saving Halla. The story shows that true peace and survival come not from ignoring problems, but from facing them, even when they are daunting. Elli's eventual understanding of her Traveler duties shows this shift from escapism to responsibility.
“Paradise is only real if you're willing to fight to keep it.”
Courtney's strong loyalty to Mark, even as he is close to darkness, shows the strength and saving power of true friendship. Her constant search for him, her emotional plea, and her refusal to give up on him are key to Mark's decision to reject Saint Dane. This theme shows that personal connections and the support of loved ones can help against despair and manipulation, providing a moral guide when one is lost. Their bond contrasts with the isolation Saint Dane tries to create.
“You don't have to walk this path alone, Mark. We're in this together.”
A periodic ritual of collective amnesia that hides a crucial purpose.
This ritual is a central plot device. Initially presented as a quaint cultural tradition that leads to the Iban's ignorance, it is later revealed to be a corrupted version of an ancient, vital process. Its true purpose was to stabilize Ibara's volatile core, making its misunderstanding and subsequent neglect a ticking time bomb for the planet. The device creates suspense as Bobby races to uncover its true meaning and re-learn how to perform it correctly before disaster strikes.
A hidden, volatile energy source beneath the planet's surface.
The unstable core of Ibara serves as the primary physical threat and Saint Dane's target. It's a natural phenomenon that, if uncontrolled, would lead to the planet's destruction and a ripple effect across Halla. This device provides a tangible, ticking clock for Bobby's mission, creating urgency and raising the stakes. It also highlights the fragility of seemingly perfect environments and the hidden dangers that can lie beneath the surface, both literally and figuratively.
The susceptibility of Bobby's friends to Saint Dane's manipulation.
This device focuses on Mark Diamond's emotional state following a personal tragedy, making him exceptionally vulnerable to Saint Dane's influence. It demonstrates Saint Dane's strategy of attacking the Travelers not just directly, but also by corrupting those close to them. This creates a parallel plotline on Second Earth that is just as critical as the main mission on Ibara, adding emotional depth and personal stakes to the overarching conflict, as Courtney fights to save Mark's soul.
