A cynical 15-year-old orphan manages a failing magician agency in a world where magic is mostly for pizza delivery. She must face her destiny when the last dragon approaches a fated end.

Synopsis

Fifteen-year-old Jennifer Strange manages Kazam, an agency for magicians in a world where magic is fading and technology is taking over. Their business faces a new problem when predictions begin about the death of the world's last dragon, Maltcassion, at the hands of an unknown Dragonslayer. This event is said to bring about an era of "Big Magic," changing their world. Jennifer seeks to understand these predictions and, at first, to find the Dragonslayer. As she learns more, she uncovers a plot by the sorcerer Mighty Shandar and King Snodd IV, who plan to use the dragon's death for their own gain. Jennifer realizes the predictions are being twisted and that dragonslaying isn't about literal killing. With help from her fellow Kazam employees, including the troll Gordon and the wizard Wizard Mooj, Jennifer stops Shandar's plans, learns she is the 'Dragonslayer' (but not in the expected way), and performs a ritual that lets Maltcassion change form, saving magic and ensuring its rebirth. The world avoids a magical collapse, and Jennifer accepts her role in the new magical age.

Plot Summary

The Fading Magic of Kazam

Fifteen-year-old Jennifer Strange, a foundling, runs Kazam, an employment agency for magicians in the Ununited Kingdoms. Magic is quickly disappearing, replaced by modern conveniences, making Kazam's services less relevant. The agency, in the Great Zambini's old mansion, has a group of aging, odd magicians like Wizard Mooj, Tiger Prawn, and the sisters Madame Mzaza and Lady Mawgon. Jennifer, though not magical, handles daily tasks, finances, and the hard job of finding work for her clients. The agency is always close to bankruptcy, struggling to pay bills and keep its few clients.

The Prophecy of the Last Dragon

Jennifer starts having vivid, unsettling visions, which she first thinks are from stress. These visions become more frequent and specific, focusing on the coming death of Maltcassion, the world's last dragon, who lives in the Dragonlands. The predictions suggest Maltcassion will be killed by a 'Dragonslayer' on the next Sunday. This news creates fear and excitement in the magic community, as the last dragon's death is believed to mean the final end of magic itself. Jennifer tells her colleagues, who are initially doubtful but soon understand the seriousness of her visions.

The Quest for the Dragonslayer

Mighty Shandar, the powerful and corrupt head of 'The Mighty Shandar Co.' magic corporation, learns of Jennifer's predictions. Believing that finding the Dragonslayer will give him great power and control over magic's future, Shandar asks Kazam to find this person. He offers a large sum for the information, temporarily helping Kazam's money problems. Jennifer, despite doubts about Shandar's motives, accepts the task, feeling responsible for understanding and perhaps preventing the events. She and the magicians begin their investigation, looking through old texts and magic lore.

The Arrival of the Troll, Gordon

Amidst the dragon prophecy chaos, a young, polite troll named Gordon arrives at Kazam. He explains he is an orphan, his parents having died in a 'troll accident' involving a badger and strong cheese. Gordon seeks shelter and work at Kazam, offering to be a handyman. Despite initial surprise from the magicians, Jennifer likes Gordon and welcomes him. Gordon quickly shows himself to be intelligent, resourceful, and loyal, becoming an unexpected but valuable member of the Kazam household.

Unraveling the Prophecies and the True Meaning of Dragonslaying

As Jennifer studies the predictions and old texts with Wizard Mooj and other Kazam members, she finds a troubling truth. The term 'Dragonslayer' doesn't mean someone who literally kills a dragon with a sword. Instead, it's a ceremonial title for the person destined to 'release' the dragon's magic back into the world through a ritual sacrifice. This sacrifice is needed to stop 'Big Magic'—a catastrophic magical collapse. The 'Dragonslayer' is not a villain, but a key figure in ensuring magic continues, though in a different form.

The Unveiling of the Dragonslayer's Identity

The predictions consistently describe the Dragonslayer as a 'foundling'—an orphan with no known parents, much like Jennifer. As the deadline nears, and with no other suitable candidate appearing, Jennifer realizes with dread: she is the Dragonslayer. The signs, visions, and descriptions all point to her. This discovery is devastating, as it means she is destined to perform the ritual sacrifice of Maltcassion, the last dragon, a creature she has come to respect. The weight of this responsibility falls heavily on her young shoulders.

The Mighty Shandar's Treachery

Mighty Shandar, learning Jennifer is the predicted Dragonslayer, reveals his true, sinister plans. He doesn't want to prevent the ritual; he wants to control it. Shandar believes that by forcing Jennifer to perform the ritual under his command, he can use the immense power released by Maltcassion's death to become the most powerful magician, controlling all magic. He tries to kidnap Jennifer and force her to fulfill the prophecy for his own gain, showing his ruthless ambition and disregard for old traditions.

Escape to the Dragonlands

With help from Gordon and the other Kazam magicians, Jennifer narrowly escapes Shandar. Realizing the ritual must be done correctly and without Shandar's interference, they decide to go to the Dragonlands, Maltcassion's sacred home. This dangerous journey is full of challenges; they must cross rough terrain and avoid Shandar's chase. The magicians use their fading magic and cleverness to protect Jennifer and ensure she reaches Maltcassion in time to fulfill her destiny on her own terms, not Shandar's.

The Confrontation and the Ritual

In the Dragonlands, Jennifer confronts Maltcassion. The dragon, ancient and tired, understands its fate and accepts Jennifer's role. Maltcassion explains the ritual's true nature—not a painful death, but a transformation, a release of its gathered magic back into the world to stop 'Big Magic' from consuming everything. With Shandar's forces closing in, Jennifer, guided by the dragon and her own sense, performs the ritual. It is a moment of great meaning, as Maltcassion dissolves into pure magic, renewing the world and preventing the complete collapse of enchantment.

The Aftermath and the Rebirth of Magic

Immediately after, magic flows back into the world, though in a different, more vibrant way. 'Big Magic' is avoided. Jennifer, now known as the Last Dragonslayer, has fulfilled her extraordinary destiny. Shandar is defeated, his attempt to control magic failing. Kazam, no longer a struggling agency for old magicians, finds new purpose. Jennifer, having saved the world, accepts her identity and the new era of magic. She continues to lead Kazam, now a key center for understanding and managing the renewed magical world, looking to a future where magic and technology can exist together.

Themes & Insights

The Enduring Power of Found Family

Despite being a foundling with no biological family, Jennifer finds a true family among the odd magicians of Kazam. They are a diverse group, often arguing and struggling, but their loyalty and care for each other are constant. This theme shows when the Kazam magicians gather around Jennifer after she is revealed as the Dragonslayer, risking their safety to protect her from Shandar and ensure the ritual happens correctly. Gordon, the orphaned troll, also finds his place in this unusual family, showing that family comes from love and loyalty, not just blood.

"We're family, Jennifer. Not by blood, perhaps, but by the sheer, glorious mess of being Kazam."

The Wizard Mooj

The Transition and Rebirth of Magic

The main idea is about magic fading, seemingly replaced by technology. However, the story shows that magic isn't truly dying but changing. Maltcassion's sacrifice isn't an end but a trigger for 'Big Magic,' a renewal that lets magic fit differently into the modern world. This theme challenges the idea of absolute endings, suggesting cycles of change and adaptation. The return of magic at the end, though in a new form, means that old ways might fade, but the core endures and develops.

"Magic isn't dying, Jennifer. It's changing. And sometimes, to change, something old must make way for the new."

Maltcassion

Responsibility and Destiny

Jennifer, a seemingly ordinary teenager, is given an extraordinary destiny as the Last Dragonslayer. She deals with the huge responsibility of performing a ritual that will change the magical world. Her initial hesitation and fear slowly turn into a sense of duty and courage. This theme explores how people, even unlikely ones, can rise to meet big challenges. Jennifer's foundling status is not a weakness but a key part of her destiny, showing that purpose can be found in unexpected places.

"Some burdens are too heavy for one person to carry alone. But some burdens, Jennifer, are meant for you, and you alone."

The Great Zambini (via a message)

Corruption and Greed vs. Purity of Purpose

The villain, The Mighty Shandar, shows the theme of corruption and greed. He tries to manipulate the dragon prophecy for personal power and wealth, seeing magic as something to control. His actions contrast sharply with Jennifer's pure intentions, as she, despite her fear, accepts her destiny to save magic for the greater good. This conflict highlights the moral choices in using power and the destructive nature of ambition without ethics. Shandar's eventual failure shows that true magic and purpose cannot be forced into control.

"Magic isn't something to be owned, Shandar. It's something to be cherished."

Plot Devices & Literary Techniques

The Prophecy

Foreshadows the central conflict and the protagonist's destiny.

The prophecies Jennifer experiences are the primary driver of the plot. They reveal the impending death of Maltcassion and the role of the 'Dragonslayer.' Initially ambiguous, they gradually become clearer, building suspense and guiding Jennifer's actions. The prophecies also serve as a red herring, making both characters and readers believe a literal dragon-slaying is imminent, before revealing the true, ceremonial nature of the event. This device effectively sets up the main conflict and Jennifer's personal journey.

The Foundling Status

Connects Jennifer to ancient magic and her fated role.

Jennifer's status as a foundling is a crucial plot device. It not only establishes her as an outsider but also directly links her to the prophecy of the Dragonslayer, who is explicitly described as a foundling. This device imbues her with a special significance and destiny, justifying why an ordinary, non-magical teenager is chosen for such a monumental task. It also deepens her character by exploring themes of identity and belonging.

Fading Magic

Creates world-building tension and motivates character actions.

The concept of 'fading magic' is central to the world-building and plot. It creates a sense of urgency and melancholy, explaining why Kazam is struggling and why the magical community is so desperate for a solution. This device drives the initial financial struggles of Kazam and provides the backdrop for the dragon prophecy, suggesting that Maltcassion's death is a necessary catalyst for magic's renewal. It also grounds the fantasy elements in a relatable, almost modern, context.

The Mighty Shandar's Corporation

Represents the modern, commercial threat to traditional magic.

The Mighty Shandar Co. serves as a plot device to represent the commercialization and potential corruption of magic in the modern world. Shandar's desire to control and profit from magic contrasts sharply with the traditional, more mystical understanding of it. This corporation acts as a foil to Kazam's old-fashioned charm and provides the primary antagonistic force, driving much of the external conflict as Shandar tries to seize control of the dragon's power.
