A young girl discovers she can talk to animals, which leads her on a dangerous quest to protect her world from dark forces and uncover divine secrets.
Daine, a young girl from the countryside, goes to live with her Aunt Em after bandits kill her ponies. Traumatized and sad, Daine struggles to adjust to life away from her familiar home. Her aunt, a skilled horse healer, notices Daine's unusual bond with animals. Daine's wild nature makes it hard for her to be around people, as she often prefers animals. She soon finds her connection to animals is deeper than just understanding; she can talk to and heal them, showing a growing magical ability she does not yet grasp or control.
Daine becomes an apprentice to Onalee, the royal horse mistress, and quickly shows her talent with animals. During a royal hunt, she meets the court mage, Numair Salmalín, who immediately senses her unusual magical potential. Numair realizes Daine has 'wild magic,' a rare and old magic that lets her talk to, understand, and even influence animals. He takes her on as his apprentice, seeing the danger and power of her untrained abilities. This mentorship helps Daine learn to control her magic, which often acts unpredictably.
As Daine trains, strange, monstrous creatures appear in Tortall. These 'Immortals' are unlike anything seen before, causing widespread fear and damage. They are immune to normal weapons and magic, making them a strong threat. Daine's wild magic is effective against some of these creatures, as she can sense them and sometimes understand their instincts. Her abilities become important in early fights, helping to identify the threat and giving useful information to Tortallan forces, including King Jonathan and Queen Thayet.
Daine goes with Numair and some knights to the Long Lake territory, a wild area near the Tusaine Mountains, where Immortal attacks are severe. There, she meets Sarra, the Wolf Speaker, a woman who lives with wolves and has a deep connection to the wild. Through Sarra and her own growing abilities, Daine learns that the Immortals are not just monsters but creatures from another realm, pulled into Tortall by a tear in reality. She finds they are weak to iron and certain wild magic, which helps in fighting them.
The threat grows with the arrival of Stormwings, terrifying bat-like Immortals with sharp claws and a taste for flesh. Daine, now more confident in her wild magic, helps fight these creatures, often using her animal friends to distract or disable them. At the same time, Emperor Mage Ozorne of Carthak reveals his part in the Immortal invasion. Wanting ultimate power and revenge against Tortall, Ozorne is manipulating the tears in reality, actively bringing more Immortals into the world. His goal is to unleash a large Immortal army to conquer Tortall and other kingdoms.
To understand Ozorne's plan and stop him, Daine, Numair, and a few allies travel to Carthak. Disguised, they enter the Emperor's palace and find the real cause of the Immortal invasion: Ozorne is intentionally weakening the barriers between worlds using blood magic and old rituals. They learn that the Immortals are creatures from the Divine Realms, and Ozorne is trying to summon and control powerful, ancient Immortals—'false gods'—for his plans. Daine's wild magic continues to grow, allowing her to sense and sometimes influence these stronger Immortals.
During a confrontation in Carthak, Daine is accidentally pulled into the Divine Realms, the Immortals' home world. This journey changes her; she meets true gods and ancient, powerful Immortals, gaining a deeper understanding of the universe's magic. In the Divine Realms, Daine undergoes a major physical and magical change, becoming partly Immortal herself. Her senses sharpen, her connection to wild magic strengthens, and she gains new abilities, including speaking with and commanding some Immortals. This change makes her uniquely ready to face the growing threat.
With her new powers and understanding, Daine returns to Tortall to join the war against the Immortals and Ozorne. She becomes important in coordinating defenses and finding weaknesses in the Immortal ranks. The final battle happens when Ozorne uses his full power, trying to summon a truly destructive Immortal army. Daine, with Numair, Alanna, and the Tortallan forces, fights to close the rifts between worlds. Her unique ability to communicate with and sometimes control Immortals helps turn the tide, disrupting Ozorne's plans and causing chaos among his summoned creatures.
To fully seal the largest and most dangerous rift, Daine realizes a big sacrifice is needed. She channels a huge amount of her wild magic, now mixed with her Immortal nature, directly into the rift. This act is physically and magically draining, pushing her to her limits. While she succeeds in closing the main gateway for Immortals, the experience changes her permanently. Her connection to the wild becomes almost overwhelming, and she deals with the effects of her new, powerful, and slightly alien nature. She is no longer just a girl, but a link between worlds.
After the war, Tortall begins to recover, and the remaining Immortals are either sent back or contained. Daine, though forever changed, starts to adjust to her new reality. Her bond with Numair grows into a deep partnership and love. She continues to work with animals, but now with much greater understanding and ability. Her role in Tortall becomes that of a guardian of the wild and a unique link to the natural world and its creatures. She accepts her Immortal nature, knowing that while it separates her from some, it also gives her a unique purpose and power to protect what she loves.

The series explores the differences and interaction between Daine's raw, intuitive 'wild magic' and Numair's structured, learned 'scholarly magic.' Wild magic is deeply tied to nature and instinct, often unpredictable but powerful, especially against Immortals. Scholarly magic, though strong, relies on formulas and knowledge, sometimes being less effective against primal threats. The story shows that both forms of magic have their strengths and limits, and that balance or understanding between them is vital for true power and protection, as seen in Daine and Numair's work together during the war.
“'Your magic is like the wild itself, Daine. Untamed, unpredictable, and infinitely powerful. Mine is like a carefully tended garden. Both have their uses, but only one can truly face the storm.'”
Daine's journey is about finding her place. At first an outcast due to her trauma and unusual abilities, she struggles to fit into human society. Her connection to animals gives her a first sense of belonging. As her wild magic grows and she becomes part-Immortal, her sense of self is challenged, leading to questions about whether she is human or something more. The theme shows that belonging is not about conforming, but about accepting one's unique identity and finding those who accept it too, ending with her acceptance of her Immortal nature and her role as a bridge between worlds.
“'I am not human, not entirely. But I am not an Immortal, not entirely. I am something in between, and that is my strength.'”
The series goes beyond simple good and evil, especially in how it shows Immortals. While many Immortals are destructive, Daine learns they are not 'evil' but rather creatures acting on their nature, often displaced from their own realms. The real evil often comes from human ambition, as seen in Ozorne, who causes suffering for personal gain. This theme highlights that understanding and empathy, even for 'monsters,' can be as important as fighting, and that the biggest threats often come from within human society.
“'They are not evil, Daine. They are just... different. And hungry. It is the humans who bring them here for their own greedy reasons who are truly evil.'”
A main theme is respect for the natural world and the results of exploiting it. Daine's wild magic is linked to nature, and her empathy extends to all living things. The Immortal invasion itself happens because humans (Ozorne) interfere with natural and magical balances. The story consistently promotes respecting animal life, ecosystems, and the delicate balance of magic. The depiction of Sarra and the wolves, and Daine's own growth, reinforces that true power and wisdom often come from living in harmony with nature, not controlling it.
“'The world isn't ours to break, Daine. We are part of it, and if we hurt it, we hurt ourselves.'”
The relationship between Daine and Numair is central to the series, showing how a strong mentor-protégé bond can transform someone. Numair's patient guidance helps Daine understand and control her powers, helping her grow from a scared, wild girl into a confident mage. This theme emphasizes the importance of guidance, trust, and shared learning in personal and magical growth. It also shows how a mentor can offer emotional support and a sense of belonging, not just teach skills.
“'You are not alone in this, Daine. I will help you, every step of the way.'”
A rare, intuitive magic connected to animals and nature.
Wild Magic is the unique ability possessed by Daine and a few others, allowing communication, healing, and influence over animals. It is a primal, untamed force, often difficult to control, but uniquely effective against the Immortals. It serves as a narrative device to distinguish Daine from other mages, provide her with unique solutions to problems, and drive her personal growth as she learns to master it. Its unpredictable nature also creates tension and challenges for Daine.
Monstrous creatures from another realm, drawn into Tortall by magical rifts.
The Immortals are the primary external antagonist of the series, serving as a catalyst for the entire plot. They are creatures of varying forms, from beast-like monsters to more intelligent, god-like beings. They represent an existential threat to Tortall and force Daine and her allies to develop new strategies and powers. Their presence also allows for exploration of themes like xenophobia, the nature of 'monsters,' and the consequences of magical meddling, particularly when it's revealed their arrival is due to human agency.
The home world of the Immortals, a place of ancient power and different rules.
The Divine Realms function as a narrative device to expand the world-building beyond Tortall and introduce higher stakes. Daine's accidental journey there is a pivotal moment, leading to her transformation and a deeper understanding of the Immortals' origins and true nature. It provides a unique setting for her character development, allowing her to gain new powers and perspectives that are crucial for defeating the main antagonist. It underscores the cosmic scale of the conflict.
Magical openings between Tortall and the Divine Realms.
The rifts are the central plot device driving the Immortal invasion. Created and manipulated by Ozorne, these tears in the fabric of reality allow Immortals to cross into Tortall. They provide a clear objective for the protagonists: to close them and stop the invasion. The strength and number of these rifts directly correlate with the escalating threat, creating a sense of urgency and danger. Closing them requires immense magical power and sacrifice, highlighting the stakes of the conflict.
Ozorne's lust for power and revenge, fueling the Immortal invasion.
Ozorne's ambition serves as the primary motivation for the overarching conflict. His desire for power and revenge against Tortall (and specifically Numair) directly leads to the deliberate summoning of Immortals. This device establishes a clear antagonist with understandable, albeit destructive, motives, contrasting with the primal, less malicious nature of many Immortals. It grounds the fantastical threat in human failings and moral choices, emphasizing that the greatest dangers often stem from within.
