On the run from alien invaders and the FBI, blogger Mark James races to save Sarah Hart while uncovering the true identity of his mysterious, weapon-supplying ally, GUARD, whose secrets will change everything he knows about the Loric.
Mark James, a human teenager who helped the Garde, is now a fugitive. He is running from the FBI, who suspect him of terrorism because of his connection to the Garde, and the Mogadorians, who see him as an enemy for helping the Loric. His immediate goal is to reach Dulce, New Mexico, where he believes Sarah Hart, his former girlfriend and Number Four's human ally, is being held by the Mogadorians. Mark drives a stolen car, has few resources, and constantly watches his back, relying on his intelligence and the little information he gets from his online contact, 'GUARD'.
While traveling, Mark receives instructions from GUARD, his anonymous contact from the 'They Walk Among Us' blog, to pick up a package. Following the coordinates, Mark finds a hidden stash containing a large amount of cash, high-tech surveillance equipment, and advanced weapons, far more than a typical blogger could get. This package gives Mark important resources for his mission and makes him more curious and suspicious about GUARD's identity. The sophisticated gear suggests GUARD is more than just a fellow conspiracy theorist.
With GUARD's advanced equipment, Mark begins to track Sarah Hart. He uses the surveillance gear to hack into local networks and monitor communications, putting together clues about Mogadorian activity in the Dulce area. His efforts confirm that Sarah is indeed held captive in a Mogadorian facility there. This information strengthens his resolve and gives him a clear target for his infiltration, despite the great danger. He understands that this is not just about rescuing Sarah, but also about gathering intelligence that could help the Garde.
Mark reaches Dulce, New Mexico, a desolate and heavily guarded area. He carefully scouts the perimeter of what he identifies as a Mogadorian research facility, noting security patrols and possible entry points. Using the stealth equipment from GUARD, he bypasses initial defenses and enters the outer parts of the compound. The size of the Mogadorian operation in Dulce is alarming, suggesting a large project beyond just holding prisoners. Mark stays hidden, relying on his wits and surprise to avoid detection as he searches for Sarah.
During his infiltration, Mark encounters Mogadorian patrols. Without Loric abilities, he relies purely on stealth and evasion. In one tense moment, a Mogadorian soldier almost discovers him, but he hides and slips away undetected, using his knowledge of the compound's layout and the cover of darkness. This near-capture highlights the extreme danger of his mission and the efficiency of Mogadorian security. It also shows his vulnerability as a human in a conflict dominated by powerful aliens.
Mark finds Sarah Hart in a heavily secured part of the facility. To his horror, she is not simply imprisoned but appears unconscious, connected to strange machinery, and part of a Mogadorian experiment. The sight of Sarah in such a vulnerable state increases Mark's anger and determination. He realizes that the Mogadorians are not just holding her but actively using her for some bad purpose, possibly related to her past connection with Number Four and the Loric Legacy.
While watching Sarah, Mark overhears Mogadorian scientists discussing their experiments. He learns they are trying to get information, possibly Loric energy, from humans who had close contact with the Garde. Their goal is to understand and potentially copy Loric Legacies or use the information to better hunt down the remaining Garde. This reveal shows the strategic importance of Sarah's capture and the depth of the Mogadorians' scientific abilities in their war against the Loric.
As Mark considers how to rescue Sarah and what to do with the information he has gathered, he receives an urgent, encrypted message from GUARD. The message is more direct and less anonymous than previous communications, hinting at a new, immediate threat to Mark's safety and the overall mission. GUARD's tone suggests a deeper personal involvement and knowledge of the situation than Mark had previously assumed, further raising questions about his true identity and motives.
At a critical moment, as Mark prepares to act, GUARD reveals his true identity. It is Sam Goode, Number Four's human best friend, who was thought to have been captured or killed by the Mogadorians. Sam explains he escaped capture and has been operating underground, gathering intelligence and resources to help the Garde and their allies. His advanced knowledge and equipment come from his unique experiences and connections made while avoiding the Mogadorians.
With his identity revealed, Sam Goode takes a more direct role, guiding Mark through a revised rescue plan for Sarah. Sam's detailed knowledge of Mogadorian tactics and technology, gained from his time in captivity and escape, is very valuable. He directs Mark to specific weak points in the facility's security and provides real-time tactical advice, turning Mark from a lone, desperate operative into part of a coordinated, two-person rescue effort. Sam emphasizes precision and speed to reduce risk for both Mark and Sarah.
Following Sam's detailed instructions, Mark performs a daring rescue. He disables the machinery connected to Sarah and carefully removes her from the facility. The escape is full of danger, with Mogadorian alarms blaring and patrols closing in. Mark uses the advanced weaponry and his agility, guided by Sam's continuous remote help, to navigate the complex and escape the compound with an unconscious Sarah. They get clear of the immediate danger, but the journey is not over.
Having rescued Sarah, Mark and Sam are now a united team. Sarah remains unconscious but safe from the Mogadorians' experiments. Sam explains his broader network of human allies and his ongoing efforts to help the Garde. Mark, no longer alone, accepts his role in this larger resistance. The novella ends with them on the run again, but now with a clear goal and a strong new alliance formed in shared trouble, ready to continue their fight against the Mogadorian invasion.
The Protagonist
Mark transforms from a desperate, lone fugitive into a key, albeit human, operative within a broader resistance network, finding a purpose beyond personal vengeance.
The Supporting
Sarah remains mostly unconscious, serving as a catalyst for Mark's actions and a symbol of Mogadorian cruelty.
The Supporting
Sam evolves from a mysterious, anonymous helper to a revealed, active leader in the human resistance, demonstrating his survival and strategic capabilities.
The Antagonists
They remain the constant, oppressive threat, their scientific objectives revealed to be a key part of their invasion strategy.
The Mentioned
They remain an external, misinformed threat, primarily serving to increase Mark's fugitive status.
Despite lacking special powers, humans like Mark and Sam show courage, resourcefulness, and determination against an alien invasion. Mark's solo journey to rescue Sarah, relying on his intelligence and Sam's advanced gear, shows human ingenuity. Sam's ability to survive, escape, and build a hidden resistance network further shows that even without Legacies, humans can fight back and make a big difference against a more advanced enemy.
“He might not have Legacies, but he had something the Mogadorians didn't count on: a human heart and a will to protect those he cared about.”
The novella explores how trust forms under extreme pressure. Mark initially relies on a mysterious online contact, GUARD, whose identity is unknown. The gradual reveal of GUARD as Sam Goode, a trusted friend of Number Four, strengthens this alliance. This theme highlights the importance of working together and supporting each other, even among different individuals, to overcome a common, powerful enemy. It shows that even small connections can become important lifelines.
“In this war, you learned quickly who you could trust. And sometimes, trust came from the most unexpected places.”
Mark's entire journey comes from his loyalty to Sarah Hart and his willingness to risk his own safety and freedom to save her. He puts himself in extreme danger, becoming a fugitive and infiltrating a heavily guarded Mogadorian facility, driven only by his commitment to her. This theme highlights the strong bonds between characters and how far people will go to protect those they care about, even when things are against them.
“There was no turning back. Sarah needed him, and he would burn the world down if he had to, just to get to her.”
The story shows that the conflict with the Mogadorians is not widely known or understood by most people. Mark is chased by the FBI, who see him as a criminal, showing the gap between the hidden alien war and human law enforcement. This theme highlights the isolation of the Garde and their allies, who must operate in secret, fighting a battle that most of the world does not know about. It adds complexity to their struggle, as they face threats from both alien invaders and misinformed human authorities.
“The world thought he was a terrorist. They had no idea the real terrorists were already here, and they weren't human.”
An anonymous online contact who provides crucial resources and information.
This device creates suspense and intrigue throughout the first half of the novella. GUARD's anonymous nature keeps both Mark and the reader guessing about his true identity and motives. The advanced equipment he provides functions as a deus ex machina at times, enabling Mark to overcome obstacles he otherwise couldn't. The eventual reveal of GUARD as Sam Goode is a significant plot twist, adding depth to the narrative and linking it more closely to the main series, while also providing a logical explanation for the sophisticated resources.
The object of the protagonist's quest, driving the entire plot.
Sarah Hart serves as the central MacGuffin. Her capture and the threat of Mogadorian experimentation provide Mark with a clear, personal, and urgent objective. Her status as a captive drives Mark's entire journey, from his initial flight to his infiltration of the Dulce facility. While she is a character, her primary function in this narrative is to motivate the protagonist's actions and advance the plot, rather than to undergo significant personal development herself.
A hidden system of communication and intelligence sharing among human allies.
Sam Goode's 'They Walk Among Us' blog and his subsequent, more sophisticated network represent a vital information-sharing device. It allows characters like Mark to receive crucial updates, coordinate actions, and gain insights into Mogadorian movements. This network acts as a counterpoint to the Mogadorians' own surveillance and intelligence, demonstrating how human ingenuity can be used to fight back in the information war, providing a lifeline and strategic advantage to the scattered resistance.
