Plot Summary

A Dangerous Swim and a New Friend

Nancy Drew, boating with her friends George Fayne and Bess Marvin on Moon Lake, sees a small sailboat in trouble. A young woman, Laura Pendleton, has been knocked out and is drifting towards rocks. Nancy, with her quick thinking and swimming skills, dives into the water and rescues Laura. After bringing her to shore, Laura explains she is an orphan and has inherited money from her grandfather, Colonel Adrian Pendleton. However, her new guardians, Mr. and Mrs. Gregory, are pressuring her to sign away her inheritance, saying her grandfather was in debt. Laura suspects something is wrong and wants a quiet place to think before deciding.

Laura's Suspicious Guardians and a Secret Meeting

Nancy immediately distrusts the Gregorys' reasons and offers Laura a place to stay at her home and help from her father, Carson Drew, a lawyer. Laura accepts, thankful for Nancy's kindness. She says the Gregorys, distant relatives, appeared after her grandfather's death and have been controlling, keeping her from friends and legal advice. They insist Colonel Pendleton's will said Laura must sign over her inheritance to them to cover supposed debts, a claim Laura finds hard to believe, given her grandfather's reputation for being careful with money. Nancy promises to investigate thoroughly, starting with the will.

The Deserted Bungalow and a Mysterious Clue

Laura mentions her grandfather had a small bungalow near Moon Lake, which he used for quiet time. Nancy decides to investigate this bungalow, hoping to find clues. She drives to the location, a lonely spot among trees, and finds the bungalow looks deserted and neglected. She finds a hidden key under a loose stone near the porch. Inside, she finds a small, locked metal box. Using the key, she opens it to find a cryptic note from Colonel Pendleton, mentioning a 'secret' and a 'false will,' with instructions to look for a specific book on a shelf. This discovery confirms Nancy's belief that Laura is being cheated.

A Trap and a Narrow Escape

As Nancy searches the bungalow, she hears a car approach. Before she can react, the door is locked from outside. Looking through a window, she sees Mr. Gregory, Mrs. Gregory, and a rough-looking man named Dirk, a handyman the Gregorys employed. They have found her and plan to trap her. Nancy realizes she is in danger. She quickly hides in a closet, hearing their conversation about forcing Laura to sign the papers and their plan to keep Nancy imprisoned until they are finished. The Gregorys clearly want Laura's inheritance, and Nancy's presence is a threat to their plan.

A Desperate Escape and a Pursuit

Thinking quickly, Nancy finds an old axe in the closet. She uses it to pry open a window and escape. As she runs into the woods, the Gregorys and Dirk see her and chase her. Nancy, knowing the area from previous visits to Moon Lake, uses her knowledge to her advantage, dodging through thick bushes and over fallen logs. The chase is intense, with the Gregorys shouting threats. Nancy outruns them, eventually reaching her car, which she had parked nearby. She drives off, shaken but determined to expose the Gregorys' plot.

The Search for the True Will

Back home, Nancy tells Carson Drew and Laura about her experience. Carson Drew is angry and immediately starts to use his legal skills. Together, they analyze Colonel Pendleton's cryptic note from the bungalow. The note refers to a specific book and a 'secret compartment.' Nancy and Carson deduce that the true will, which would protect Laura's inheritance, must be hidden within this book or compartment. They realize the Gregorys must be using a forged will to try and cheat Laura. Their immediate goal is to find the correct book, which they think is still at the bungalow, or perhaps at the Gregorys' house.

A Return to the Bungalow and a Risky Discovery

Despite the danger, Nancy feels she must return to the bungalow to find the book mentioned in the note. She carefully approaches the deserted building, this time more stealthily. Inside, she searches the bookshelves and finds an old, leather-bound copy of Shakespeare's plays. Following the cryptic instructions, she finds a hidden compartment within the binding. Inside, she finds Colonel Pendleton's real last will, clearly stating Laura as the sole heir and not mentioning debts to the Gregorys. As she secures the will, she hears Dirk's footsteps approaching, forcing her to make another quick exit.

The Confrontation and the Evidence

With the true will, Carson Drew acts quickly. He arranges a meeting with Mr. and Mrs. Gregory, supposedly to discuss Laura's 'debts' and the signing of the false papers. Nancy and Laura go with him. During the meeting, as the Gregorys confidently present their made-up will and pressure Laura, Carson Drew shows the real will. The Gregorys are stunned and their composure breaks, showing their guilt. They try to deny the evidence, but the true will is undeniable. Carson Drew explains their criminal actions and the legal consequences for attempted fraud and false imprisonment.

Justice Served and a Happy Resolution

Faced with clear evidence and the threat of arrest, the Gregorys confess their plan. They had forged a will and conspired to cheat Laura out of her inheritance. Carson Drew contacts the authorities, and the Gregorys, along with Dirk, are arrested. Laura's inheritance is secured, and she is relieved and thankful to Nancy and Carson Drew for their support and courage. Laura decides to stay with Nancy and her father for a while, enjoying their company and peace of mind before making plans for her future, now free from the Gregorys.

Themes & Insights

Justice and Righting Wrongs

Nancy Drew's commitment to justice is a main theme. From the moment she rescues Laura Pendleton, Nancy wants to expose the Gregorys' fraud and ensure Laura gets her inheritance. This theme is clear in Nancy's personal risk-taking, like her repeated visits to the dangerous bungalow, and Carson Drew's legal pursuit of the truth. The ending, with the Gregorys' arrest and Laura's success, shows that justice wins against greed and lies.

Nancy's eyes flashed. 'I'll certainly do everything I can to help you, Laura. Nobody's going to cheat you out of your inheritance if I can help it!'

Nancy Drew

Bravery and Resourcefulness

Nancy Drew shows bravery and cleverness throughout the mystery. Her rescue of Laura from the lake shows her courage and swimming skills. More importantly, her repeated trips into the deserted bungalow, despite knowing the dangers, and her clever escapes from the Gregorys and Dirk, show her quick thinking under pressure. Whether prying open a window with an axe or outsmarting her pursuers in the woods, Nancy's ability to adapt and act decisively helps her succeed and solves the plot.

With an axe, Nancy quickly pried at the sash. The window gave way, and she slipped out, just as she heard a car approaching.

Narrator

Family and Trust

The theme of family and trust is shown through Laura and her deceased grandfather, and Nancy and Carson Drew. Colonel Pendleton's careful planning to protect Laura's inheritance, even after his death, shows family love and trust. In contrast, the Gregorys misuse their distant relation to Laura to betray her trust. Nancy's trust in her father's legal knowledge and Carson's faith in Nancy's detective skills form a strong, supportive family that is different from the manipulative Gregorys.

'My grandfather would never have left me in debt,' Laura insisted, her voice trembling. 'He was always so careful with money, and he loved me very much.'

Laura Pendleton

Appearance vs. Reality

This theme is clear in the deceptive nature of the Gregorys, who act like Laura's kind guardians while secretly planning to cheat her. The deserted bungalow itself shows this theme; it looks abandoned and harmless, but it holds clues and becomes a dangerous place for Nancy. The false will, seeming official, hides the Gregorys' true intentions and goes against Colonel Pendleton's real wishes. Nancy's investigation constantly uncovers layers of lies to reveal the truth.

'They seemed so kind at first,' Laura confessed, 'but then they started pressuring me, and I knew something wasn't right.'

Laura Pendleton

Plot Devices & Literary Techniques

The Deserted Bungalow

A central setting that serves as both a clue repository and a trap.

The deserted bungalow acts as a crucial plot device by being the primary location where key clues are hidden and where Nancy faces her most direct physical threats. It is initially a place of mystery, containing Colonel Pendleton's cryptic note and the hidden will. However, it quickly transforms into a dangerous trap when the Gregorys lock Nancy inside, heightening the stakes and forcing her to use her ingenuity to escape. Its isolated nature emphasizes the peril Nancy faces and the secrecy surrounding the Gregorys' plot.

Cryptic Clues and Hidden Objects

Colonel Pendleton's method of posthumously guiding Nancy to the truth.

Colonel Pendleton's use of cryptic clues – the hidden key, the note mentioning a 'secret' and a 'false will,' and the reference to a specific book – serves as a classic mystery plot device. These clues are essential for Nancy to piece together the truth about Laura's inheritance. They provide a breadcrumb trail that leads Nancy to the genuine will, demonstrating the deceased's foresight and intelligence. This device allows for a gradual unveiling of the mystery and engages Nancy's deductive reasoning skills.

The Forged Will

The central object of contention and the catalyst for the Gregorys' actions.

The forged will is the primary object that drives the conflict and the Gregorys' criminal scheme. It represents their greed and deception, as they use it to try and legally (though fraudulently) acquire Laura's inheritance. Its existence necessitates Nancy's investigation to find the true will. The dramatic confrontation where Carson Drew produces the genuine will against the forged one provides a climactic moment, exposing the villains and resolving the central legal dispute.

The Ingenious Escape

A recurring moment where Nancy uses her wits to escape danger.

The 'ingenious escape' is a hallmark of Nancy Drew mysteries and a significant plot device here. Nancy's escape from the locked bungalow, using an axe to pry open a window, and her subsequent successful evasion of the Gregorys and Dirk through the woods, are prime examples. These moments highlight Nancy's bravery, quick thinking, and physical prowess, establishing her as a capable and formidable protagonist. They inject suspense and action into the narrative, demonstrating that Nancy can handle herself in perilous situations.
