Welcome to Shadowhunter Academy
After *City of Heavenly Fire*, Simon Lewis has lost all his memories as a vampire and human, but he still loves Isabelle and is friends with Clary. He decides to join the reopened Shadowhunter Academy to become a Shadowhunter, hoping to create a new identity. He arrives with George Lovelace, a human who also wants to become a Shadowhunter. At the Academy, Simon immediately notices the strict hierarchy and bias against those not born into the Shadowhunter world. He lives in the 'basement' dorms with other hopeful Nephilim from non-Shadowhunter backgrounds, including Jon Cartwright, a snobbish boy, Julie Beauvale, a kind girl, and Beatriz Mendoza. This initial experience shows the problems within the institution.
The Lost Herondale
Jace Herondale, now a famous Shadowhunter, gives a guest lecture at the Academy. He talks about the history of the Herondale family, focusing on the sad story of Tobias Herondale, who was banished from the Shadowhunters for loving a human. Tobias and his human wife, Eva, had a child, Stephen, who was later returned to the Shadowhunters, while Tobias and Eva were thought to be dead. This story affects Simon deeply as he deals with his own identity and the biases in the Shadowhunter community. Jace's lecture also hints at the complexities of love and duty, ideas Simon is starting to understand in his own life.
The Whitechapel Fiend
Tessa Gray, a strong warlock and immortal, visits the Academy to share a historical account. She describes the Shadowhunters' involvement in investigating Jack the Ripper in Victorian London, revealing that the killer was a demon. This story offers a look into the Shadowhunters' past and their ongoing fight against demons, as well as the challenges of keeping secrets from the human world. Tessa's story also mentions the early days of the London Institute and the diverse group who worked together to protect humanity, giving Simon a wider view of the Shadowhunter world beyond the Academy.
Nothing but Shadows
Strange things start happening at the Academy: objects move, whispers are heard, and there is an unsettling presence. Simon, with George and Julie, investigates these events. They find that the Academy is haunted by the ghost of James Herondale, a former student who died during a training exercise. James's story reveals more about the Academy's past, including cases of injustice and cover-ups. This investigation makes Simon confront the darker parts of the Shadowhunter institution and question its honesty, strengthening his bond with his new friends who share his doubts.
The Evil We Love
Magnus Bane, the High Warlock of Brooklyn, gives a lecture on forbidden magic and the dangers of dark powers. He shares stories from his long life, showing how even those with good intentions can be corrupted. Magnus's lecture is especially meaningful for Simon, who, as a former vampire, has felt the pull of otherworldy forces. The warlock's wisdom encourages Simon to be watchful and to understand the complexities of good and evil, rather than seeing them simply. Magnus also subtly encourages Simon about his unique background.
Pale Kings and Princes
Helen Blackthorn, a half-faerie Shadowhunter, visits the Academy to teach students about the politics and dangers of the Faerie Courts. She explains the balance of power between the Seelie and Unseelie Courts and the importance of respecting Faerie laws and customs. This lesson is important for the aspiring Shadowhunters, as the Faerie realm often leads to alliances and conflicts. Helen's personal experiences as a half-faerie provide a unique and often painful view of navigating two worlds, making Simon think about his own mixed identity and the difficulties of being an outsider.
Bitter of Tongue
During a lesson on Faerie interactions, a fellow student, Jon Cartwright, makes disrespectful comments about Faeries and other Downworlders. Simon, remembering his own experiences with bias and his lost memories of being a vampire, strongly defends the Downworlders. His passionate speech shows the hypocrisy within the Shadowhunter community and the importance of empathy and understanding. This event marks a big step in Simon's growth, as he starts to speak up and stand for what he believes in, even if it means going against the Academy's established norms.
The Fiery Trial
The Academy students go through a trial to test their combat skills, teamwork, and resilience. Simon, George, Julie, and Beatriz work together, facing simulated demonic threats. During the trial, Simon's quick thinking and unexpected combat ability, from his D&D knowledge and natural bravery, are very helpful. The trial pushes them to their limits and strengthens their bonds, showing that their different backgrounds and unusual skills are strengths, not weaknesses. This experience solidifies their friendship and their commitment to becoming Shadowhunters, despite the Academy's flaws.
Born to Endless Night
Simon and his friends uncover a disturbing secret: the Academy has been secretly allowing a few humans to be killed by demons during training, calling it 'accidents' to maintain a certain purity in the Shadowhunter ranks. This reveals deep corruption within the institution. They learn that Jon Cartwright's family is involved in this cover-up. The group realizes that George Lovelace, being human, is in great danger. This discovery forces them to act quickly to protect George and expose the truth, even if it means opposing powerful figures within the Clave.
Angels Twice Descending
Simon, George, Julie, and Beatriz gather evidence and expose the Academy's corrupt practices to the Clave, risking their own futures. The truth about the human deaths and the cover-up comes out, leading to a big scandal and reform within the Academy. Because of their bravery and successfully completing the trials, Simon and his friends get the chance to become full Shadowhunters. Simon, having found his new identity and purpose, takes his runes, officially becoming a Nephilim. He embraces his new life, ready for future challenges, and his memories, though still fragmented, feel less like a burden and more like a unique part of his journey.
