In the grimy, gas-lit canals of Ketterdam, a cutthroat criminal mastermind assembles a crew of six dangerous outcasts for an impossible heist, where the only thing riskier than their target is trusting each other.
The story begins in Ketterdam. Kaz Brekker, a criminal and leader of the Dregs, is called by Jan Van Eck, a merchant. Van Eck offers Kaz a heist: get into the Ice Court, a Fjerda military base, and extract Bo Yul-Bayur, the Shu scientist who made 'jurda parem.' This drug makes Grisha powers stronger and uncontrollable, threatening to destabilize the world. The reward is 30 million kruge, an amount that could strengthen the Dregs' power and Kaz's reputation. Kaz agrees, seeing the danger and potential for betrayal.
Kaz assembles his crew, each chosen for their skills. He recruits Inej Ghafa, his spy known as the Wraith, who can get into any place. Next is Jesper Fahey, a sharpshooter with a gambling problem. Nina Zenik, a Grisha Heartrender, is brought in for her knowledge of Fjerda and her ability to manipulate bodies. Matthias Helvar, a former Fjerdan Drüskelle (Grisha hunter) imprisoned by Kaz, is recruited for his knowledge of the Ice Court's layout and Fjerdan customs. Finally, Wylan Van Eck, Jan Van Eck's runaway son and a demolitions expert, joins the team for his skill with explosives and his potential as a hostage.
The crew travels to Fjerda on a stolen ship. Tensions are high, especially between Nina and Matthias, whose past relationship ended with his betrayal and her actions leading to his imprisonment. Kaz reveals his plan to enter the Ice Court: they will pretend to be prisoners, using Wylan's demolitions to create a distraction. Inside, they must navigate the guarded prison section, the White Island, before finding Yul-Bayur. Inej's acrobatic skills and stealth are important for their initial scouting and movement through Djerholm, the Fjerdan capital.
The crew does the first part of their plan, staging their capture and being taken to the Ice Court as 'prisoners' for execution. Wylan's explosives create a diversion, letting them escape their cells. Inside the ice-fortified structure, Matthias's knowledge of the layout helps them through hidden passages and past patrols. They navigate the Menagerie, where Grisha prisoners are kept, and Nina's Heartrender abilities disable guards and protect the group. Inej's scouting and silent takedowns ensure their progress, while Jesper provides cover fire.
The crew reaches the White Island, the most secure part of the Ice Court, where they expect to find Bo Yul-Bayur. They find the scientist is dead, and the real target is his son, Kuwei Yul-Bo. Kuwei did not create jurda parem but knows how to copy it, making him valuable. This change in mission adds risk. They learn Kuwei, though scared, is smart. Nina uses her Grisha abilities to calm him and earn his trust. Matthias struggles between his loyalty to Fjerda and his growing bond with the crew and his desire to protect Nina.
To get Kuwei out, Kaz plans to get into the annual Embassy Ball in the Ice Court. They disguise Kuwei as a Shu ambassador and use stealth, misdirection, and Nina's Grisha powers to move through the crowded palace. Inej, as the Wraith, moves through the vents, providing information and creating distractions. Jesper and Wylan use their skills to manipulate the environment and provide cover. They avoid detection by the Drüskelle and other security forces, relying on precise timing and quick thinking to keep their cover and move Kuwei through the guarded parts of the complex.
Their escape from the Ice Court is a fight. As they move through the fortress, they meet strong resistance from the Drüskelle, who know they are there. Nina takes jurda parem to save Matthias and the others from the Fjerdan forces, making her Heartrender abilities stronger but risking addiction. Matthias fights with them, using his knowledge of the fortress. Inej uses her knives and stealth to clear paths, while Jesper's sharpshooting covers their retreat. Wylan's explosives create distractions, letting them get out of the Ice Court.
After their escape, the crew leaves Fjerda. Fjerdan forces, including Jarl Brum, chase them. Nina struggles with the effects of jurda parem, experiencing highs and lows, and the fear of addiction. Matthias, now protective of Nina, helps her manage her withdrawal symptoms, strengthening their bond. Kaz, always careful, anticipates betrayals and plans for them. They have close calls, using their skills to avoid capture and navigate the Fjerdan land and waterways, keeping Kuwei safe.
Back in Ketterdam, Jan Van Eck betrays them. Instead of paying the 30 million kruge, Van Eck wants Kuwei Yul-Bo and the jurda parem formula for himself, planning to profit from the drug. He ambushes Kaz and the crew, trapping them in a burning warehouse. Inej is stabbed by a rival gang member working for Van Eck and left for dead. Kaz, angry and wounded, gets the remaining crew to escape, but they lose Kuwei and the payment. Inej's life is in danger, a blow to Kaz.
Despite their injuries and the loss of Kuwei and the payment, Kaz is not defeated. He plots his revenge against Jan Van Eck. With Inej recovering, Jesper, Wylan, Nina, and Matthias support Kaz. They find out Van Eck plans to auction Kuwei at a merchant council meeting. Kaz devises a plan using deception and exploiting Van Eck's weaknesses, aiming to rescue Kuwei, ruin Van Eck's reputation, and get their reward. This sets up a final confrontation.

The Mentioned
Rollins remains a powerful presence in Ketterdam, setting the stage for future confrontations with Kaz.
Many characters struggle with their identities and finding a place. Inej, a Suli girl taken from her family, wants a home and a purpose beyond being the Wraith. Jesper hides his Grisha identity, fearing judgment. Matthias deals with his Fjerdan prejudice and his growing loyalty to Nina and the Dregs, challenging his beliefs. Wylan, disowned by his father, finds acceptance and family among the outcasts. Kaz, haunted by his past, finds a form of family in his crew, even as he struggles with closeness. The crew, despite their differences, form a strong bond, creating a sense of belonging.
“A good crew is a safe haven.”
Revenge drives many characters, especially Kaz Brekker, whose life is shaped by his desire for vengeance on Pekka Rollins. His planning and actions often come from this need. The book also explores justice; while Kaz seeks personal retribution, Nina is driven by a broader sense of justice for Grisha. The heist itself is a form of justice for the world, preventing the misuse of jurda parem. The story questions if revenge brings peace or continues violence, especially with Jan Van Eck's betrayal.
“The only way out of a tight spot is to make it a tight spot for someone else.”
Each crew member has trauma. Kaz is scarred by his brother's loss and his experience on the Reaper's Barge, shown in his aversion to touch and emotional walls. Inej was trafficked, leaving her needing control and safety, yet she keeps her spiritual strength. Nina endured capture and torture. Matthias suffers from his indoctrination and his betrayal of Nina. Despite these wounds, they show resilience, using their past to fuel determination and develop coping mechanisms, finding strength in their collective survival.
“She was not a slave. She was a weapon.”
Ketterdam and the heist have moral ambiguity. Kaz operates by his own code, blurring right and wrong for his goals. The crew consists of thieves, spies, and ex-Grisha hunters, all making morally difficult decisions to survive. Nina, a Heartrender, uses her powers for harm when needed and is forced to take jurda parem, risking addiction. Matthias deals with his prejudices against Grisha, realizing the hypocrisy of his beliefs. The book asks characters and readers to question the line between right and wrong and if good ends justify bad means, especially with a drug like jurda parem.
“When everyone is a monster, you can afford to be a little monstrous yourself.”
A highly addictive drug that amplifies Grisha powers to a dangerous degree
Jurda parem is the central MacGuffin and plot driver of the entire story. This highly addictive substance, created by Bo Yul-Bayur, dramatically enhances Grisha abilities, making them incredibly powerful but uncontrollable and eventually fatal. Its existence threatens to destabilize the world, turning Grisha into weapons. The heist's primary goal is to prevent its widespread distribution by extracting its creator or the knowledge to replicate it. Nina Zenik's forced use of jurda parem during the escape highlights its terrifying power and the severe consequences of its influence, serving as a constant source of tension and a ticking clock for her well-being.
An impenetrable Fjerdan military fortress and the setting for the heist
The Ice Court serves as the primary setting and the ultimate obstacle for the crew. Described as an unbreachable fortress, it is a marvel of Fjerdan architecture and security, designed to hold the most dangerous criminals and secrets. Its intricate layout, multiple layers of defense (the White Island, the Menagerie, the Royal Palace), and harsh environment create a constant sense of peril and challenge. Matthias's intimate knowledge of the Ice Court is a crucial plot device, as it allows the crew to navigate its secrets, while its formidable nature emphasizes the audacity and impossibility of the heist itself, heightening the stakes.
A meticulously planned, multi-stage operation with increasing stakes and unexpected twists
The entire novel is structured as a complex heist narrative. Kaz's meticulous planning, the recruitment of specialized team members, the detailed exposition of the plan, and the execution of each stage (infiltration, extraction, escape) are central. This structure allows for a constant escalation of tension, unexpected complications, and reveals of each character's unique skills. The 'impossible' nature of the target (the Ice Court) combined with the high reward and the ever-present threat of betrayal (culminating in Van Eck's double-cross) keeps the reader engaged, demonstrating Kaz's genius and the crew's adaptability under pressure.
Interspersed memories and narratives that reveal characters' motivations and trauma
Throughout the narrative, the pasts of the main characters are gradually revealed through strategically placed flashbacks and internal monologues. These provide crucial context for their motivations, fears, and relationships. For instance, Kaz's flashbacks to Jordie's death and the Reaper's Barge explain his aversions and drive for revenge. Nina and Matthias's shared history in the fjerdan wilderness details their complex romantic and political ties. Inej's memories of the Menagerie illuminate her resolve and desire for freedom. These reveals deepen character understanding, add emotional weight to their present actions, and explain their unique skills and vulnerabilities, making their journey more resonant.
