An ordinary orphan finds a unique power to summon light, pulling her into a world of magic, war, and dangerous romance as she fights to destroy a monstrous darkness threatening her country.
Alina Starkov, a small and ordinary cartographer, and Malyen Oretsev, a charming tracker, grew up together in the Keramzin orphanage. They share a strong bond. As young adults, they are drafted into the First Army of Ravka, a nation divided by the monstrous Shadow Fold. When Mal is chosen for a dangerous crossing of the Fold, Alina, wanting to stay with him, sabotages her own mapmaking attempt to get a place on the same skiff. The journey is terrifying, as the Fold is a region of unnatural darkness filled with flesh-eating monsters called volcra.
During the difficult crossing of the Shadow Fold, volcra attack the skiff. Chaos erupts, and many soldiers die. Mal is severely injured. As a volcra lunges for him, Alina's hidden power bursts out in a blinding flash of light. This light pushes back the volcra and lights up the entire Fold, saving the remaining crew. The extraordinary display of power immediately identifies Alina as a Sun Summoner, a Grisha of immense and legendary ability, thought to be a myth. The Grisha present quickly take her into custody, separating her from Mal.
Alina is taken to the Little Palace in Os Alta, the training ground for the Grisha elite. There, she meets the Darkling, the powerful and charismatic leader of the Second Army, who can summon darkness. He is fascinated by Alina's Sun Summoner power, seeing its potential to destroy the Shadow Fold. Alina feels overwhelmed and out of place among the beautiful, confident Grisha, struggling to believe in her own abilities. She misses Mal terribly and feels alone in this new, glittering world of privilege and magic.
Under the stern and ancient Grisha Baghra, Alina begins her training. However, she struggles to summon her power on command, often feeling like a fraud. Her classmates, especially Zoya, a beautiful and arrogant Squaller, mock her clumsiness. Alina's loneliness grows because she is separated from Mal, who she learns is sending letters she never receives. The Darkling, however, gives her special attention, encouraging her and offering comfort, which slowly draws her in. He shares his vision for a united Ravka, free from the Fold.
Despite her initial difficulties, Alina's power slowly awakens, especially during emotional moments or when she feels a connection to the Darkling. She discovers that her abilities are tied to her emotional state and self-belief. The Darkling continues to mentor her, showing her how to use her light, and their relationship deepens with growing romantic tension. He shares his vision of a powerful Ravka and makes her feel important, perhaps for the first time. Alina also starts making tentative friendships with other Grisha, like Genya, a Tailor.
Baghra, frustrated with Alina's slow progress and perhaps sensing danger, confronts Alina and reveals a shocking truth: the Darkling is her son, and he is centuries old. He created the Shadow Fold centuries ago, a terrible mistake born from his immense power and desire to protect Grisha from persecution. Baghra warns Alina that the Darkling intends to use her power not to destroy the Fold, but to amplify his own and expand his control, plunging the world into eternal darkness. This revelation shatters Alina's trust and forces her to rethink everything she thought she knew about the Darkling and her own destiny.
Horrified by Baghra's revelation, Alina realizes she is a pawn in the Darkling's sinister plan. She understands that her power is a tool he intends to exploit, not a gift for Ravka's good. With Baghra's reluctant help, Alina escapes the Little Palace, leaving behind the only life she's known since discovering her powers. Her immediate goal is to find Mal, the only person she truly trusts, and to escape the Darkling's reach. She knows the journey will be dangerous, as the Darkling will send his forces to retrieve her, and she is now a fugitive.
After a difficult journey, Alina finds Mal. Their reunion is emotional, solidifying their deep bond. Mal, who thought Alina had forgotten him, is overjoyed to see her. Together, they decide to flee Ravka, seeking refuge in the neighboring country of Novyi Zem. However, their escape is short-lived. The Darkling, using his power and loyal Grisha, relentlessly pursues them. They are forced to constantly move, dodging patrols and fighting for their lives, as the Darkling's reach extends beyond the Little Palace walls. Their journey is a desperate race against time.
Alina and Mal learn of the mythical Morozova's Stag, a powerful creature whose antlers, if made into an amplifier, could significantly boost Alina's Sun Summoner abilities, making her strong enough to fight the Darkling. They begin a dangerous quest to find the stag, traveling through treacherous landscapes. Their bond strengthens during this ordeal, as Mal's tracking skills and loyalty prove invaluable. They face dangers from the wilderness and the Darkling's relentless pursuit, knowing time is running out.
Alina and Mal finally find Morozova's Stag. Just as they are about to claim its power, the Darkling and his forces appear. He captures them, revealing he has been tracking them all along. The Darkling kills the stag himself, then uses his power to fuse its antlers to Alina's collarbone, making her his permanent amplifier. He explains that he intends to use her enhanced power, combined with his own, to expand the Shadow Fold and gain ultimate control over Ravka and beyond. Mal is imprisoned, and Alina is now a captive, her power bound to her captor.
The Darkling leads a large procession, including Alina, his Grisha army, and a group of captured First Army soldiers (including Mal), back into the Shadow Fold. His plan is to show his amplified power and Alina's subjugation to foreign dignitaries and Ravkan generals, forcing them to acknowledge his supreme authority. Alina, now linked to the Darkling through the amplifier, feels his darkness inside her, struggling to maintain her own will. The atmosphere on the skiff is tense, a chilling preview of the Darkling's terrifying display of power.
As the Darkling begins his demonstration, expanding the Fold with Alina's amplified power, Mal breaks free and attacks him. In the ensuing chaos, Alina realizes that the stag's amplifier, while binding her to the Darkling, also allows her to choose how to use her power. She rejects the Darkling's control, unleashing a blinding wave of light that temporarily incapacitates him and the volcra. With Mal's help, she escapes the Fold, leaving the Darkling seemingly defeated and the Fold still intact, but with a glimmer of hope for Ravka's future. They flee, knowing they are still hunted.

Alina's journey is about discovering and accepting her true identity. She begins feeling inadequate and overshadowed. Finding she is the Sun Summoner forces her to confront who she is and what she can do. She struggles with expectations, the glamour of the Grisha world, and the Darkling's manipulation, while trying to reconcile her past self with her new power. Her eventual acceptance of her unique abilities, separate from outside approval, is central to her growth, shown when she finally summons her light independently in the Fold.
“I was a Grisha. I was a Sun Summoner. I was the only one. And I was not afraid.”
The novel explores how power can corrupt and how control is seductive. The Darkling embodies this; his centuries of life and immense power have led him to believe he knows best, justifying ruthless actions for a 'greater good' that serves his ambition. He seeks to control Alina's power for domination, not liberation. Even Alina grapples with the appeal of her growing power and the temptation to use it selfishly, showing the constant struggle against corruption when wielding great strength.
“The problem with wanting is that it makes us weak.”
Loyalty is a repeated idea, especially through the strong bond between Alina and Mal. Their deep, lifelong connection is tested by separation, jealousy, and the Darkling's manipulations, yet it proves unbreakable. Conversely, betrayal is a powerful force, most notably with the Darkling's manipulation of Alina and Genya's divided loyalties. Baghra's betrayal of her son, however, is an act of fierce loyalty to a greater good, showing the complex moral landscape of allegiance.
“I'm not going to leave you. I'm never going to leave you, Mal.”
Alina is told she will destroy the Fold, yet she constantly makes choices that define her path. Is her power a gift of destiny, or do her choices truly shape her impact? The Darkling believes he controls destiny, both his own and Alina's, trying to force her into his vision. However, Alina ultimately reclaims her agency by breaking free from his control and choosing her own path. This shows that while destiny might provide a starting point, individual choice dictates one's fate and impact on the world.
“The world is not a place of safety, Alina. It is a place of monsters.”
A vast, unnatural swath of darkness teeming with monsters that divides Ravka.
The Shadow Fold is a central plot device, serving as both a physical barrier and a symbolic representation of Ravka's brokenness and the Darkling's past mistakes. It creates constant tension and danger, driving much of the plot as characters must cross it or seek to destroy it. It is the catalyst for Alina's power manifestation and the ultimate goal for the Darkling's scheme, acting as the primary antagonist's tool and the protagonist's challenge.
A legendary Grisha with the unique ability to summon light, believed to be a myth.
The Sun Summoner acts as a messianic prophecy and a macguffin. Alina's identity as the Sun Summoner immediately elevates her importance and sets her apart. This rare ability is the key to destroying the Fold and the object of the Darkling's obsession. The prophecy creates an expectation for Alina and provides a narrative drive, as her journey is tied to fulfilling this legendary role.
A mythical creature whose parts can amplify a Grisha's power.
Morozova's Stag functions as a powerful amplifier, a tangible goal for Alina and Mal, and a critical turning point in the plot. It represents a shortcut to immense power but also a trap set by the Darkling. The amplifier physically binds Alina to the Darkling, representing his control, but ultimately becomes the means through which she discovers her true agency, as she learns to choose how her power is used, even while amplified.
The lavish training grounds and home for the Grisha elite.
The Little Palace serves as a setting that highlights the stark contrast between Alina's humble origins and the opulent world of the Grisha. It's a place of both opportunity and confinement, where Alina is trained but also isolated and manipulated. It showcases the social hierarchy of Ravka and the power dynamics within the Grisha, acting as a gilded cage for Alina and a symbol of the Darkling's influence.
