Septimus Heap, the seventh son of the seventh son, must navigate a world of powerful magic, dark plots, and his extraordinary destiny in a saga of wizardry and adventure.
The story starts with Silas Heap, the seventh son of the seventh son, finding a baby girl in the snow. He brings her home, and his wife Sarah names her Jenna. Unbeknownst to them, Jenna is the Princess, targeted for assassination. At the same time, the family's seventh son, Septimus Heap, is declared dead after birth, though his body is never found. Later, a Young Army Messenger Boy from the Castle arrives to take Septimus Heap as an apprentice to the ExtraOrdinary Wizard, Marcia Overstrand. However, it turns out the Messenger Boy is the true Septimus Heap, having been switched at birth and raised in the Young Army, now known as Boy 412.
Marcia Overstrand, the ExtraOrdinary Wizard, learns that Jenna is the missing Princess and that an assassin, the Hunter, is after her. Marcia, along with Silas, Sarah, and their children Nicko and Sam, decide to leave the Castle with Jenna to protect her. The Hunter, a dangerous figure, pursues them. During their escape, they face various magical obstacles and use their cleverness and Marcia's powerful magic to avoid capture. The Heap family's loyalty and Marcia's protective instincts are clear as they risk everything for Jenna.
To escape the Hunter, Marcia leads the group towards the Marram Marshes, a dangerous and foggy area known for its hidden threats and unusual residents. Their destination is Ramkin's Cottage, home to Aunt Zelda, a powerful and reclusive witch. The journey is full of danger, including encounters with swamp creatures and the constant threat of the Hunter. They use their combined skills—Silas’s tracking, Sarah’s resourcefulness, and Marcia’s magic—to navigate the difficult land and reach the safety of Zelda's home, which is protected by old magic.
The Young Army Messenger Boy, now known to be the real Septimus Heap (Boy 412), begins his apprenticeship with Marcia Overstrand. He is initially upset and confused, having been raised in a strict military setting. As he learns about magic, he starts to question his past and identity. Marcia recognizes his natural magical talent and guides him, but their relationship is strained at first due to his upbringing and her demanding nature. Septimus slowly begins to uncover the mystery of his true parents and how he was switched at birth, which connects him deeply to the Heap family.
DomDaniel, the ancient and powerful Necromancer, Marcia's former master and a dark wizard, is slowly being brought back to life by his apprentice, Simon Heap. Simon, Silas and Sarah’s eldest son, is jealous of Septimus and resentful of his family, making him open to DomDaniel’s influence. DomDaniel's return poses a serious threat to the Castle and the Heap family, as he seeks to regain his power and destroy anyone who stands in his way, especially Marcia and the rightful heir to the throne, Jenna.
To fight DomDaniel, Septimus and Jenna, with Nicko and the loyal Boggart, Stanley, go on a dangerous journey aboard the Dragon Boat. Their mission is to find a Dragon's Egg, which holds great magical power and is important for restoring balance and defeating DomDaniel. The Dragon Boat, a living, sentient vessel, helps them in their quest, navigating dangerous waters and encountering various magical creatures. This adventure strengthens the bond between Septimus and Jenna as they face many challenges together.
DomDaniel, now fully back, sets up his base in the Darke Magyk Tower, a place of immense dark power. From here, he begins to gather his forces and perform dark rituals to increase his strength, preparing for a full attack on the Castle. Simon Heap, his apprentice, helps him, hoping to gain power and recognition. DomDaniel's influence spreads, casting a shadow over the land and creating a sense of urgency for Septimus, Jenna, and Marcia to stop him before he becomes too strong.
A major fight breaks out as DomDaniel and his army of dark creatures and bewitched people attack the Castle. Marcia Overstrand, with the help of the Heap family, Aunt Zelda, and the Young Army, puts up a fierce defense. The battle is intense, showing Marcia's strong magical abilities and the courage of the Heap family. Septimus, still an apprentice, uses his developing magical skills to help in the defense, proving his worth and loyalty. The fate of the Castle and its residents is uncertain.
During his apprenticeship and the ongoing conflict, Septimus finds the Septimus Stone, a powerful ancient artifact that connects with his own magical essence. This stone is deeply tied to his destiny as the true seventh son of the seventh son and the rightful ExtraOrdinary Wizard. Finding the stone unlocks hidden powers within him and gives him insights into the history of magic and his unique place in it, further setting his path as a powerful wizard.
In a final confrontation, Septimus, now more confident in his magical abilities and using the power of the Septimus Stone, faces DomDaniel alongside Marcia Overstrand. The battle shows Septimus's growth and Marcia's steady power. Through their combined magical skill, strategic thinking, and the help of other characters, DomDaniel is defeated and banished. This victory is a significant turning point, securing the safety of the Castle and establishing Septimus's role as a powerful wizard in training.
With DomDaniel defeated and the Castle safe, Jenna begins to accept her true identity as the Princess. While she initially prefers a simple life with the Heap family, she understands the importance of her royal duties. She starts to learn about governance, diplomacy, and the history of her kingdom, guided by Marcia's wise advice and the support of the Heap family. Her journey is about accepting her heritage and preparing for the responsibilities that come with being the rightful ruler.
After DomDaniel's defeat, Septimus Heap's apprenticeship with Marcia Overstrand continues, now with a deeper understanding and respect between them. He works to master the complex art of ExtraOrdinary Wizardry, learning from Marcia's vast knowledge and experience. His unique connection to ancient magic and his strong natural abilities mark him as a prodigy. Septimus's journey as an apprentice is far from over, but he has shown his potential and is firmly on the path to becoming a powerful wizard, ready for future challenges.

Identity is a main theme, especially for Septimus and Jenna. Septimus, raised as Boy 412, struggles with his true heritage as a Heap and the seventh son of a seventh son, destined for magic. Jenna, the lost Princess, struggles between her royal destiny and her wish for a normal life with the Heap family. Both characters must come to terms with their pasts and their true selves, often finding that family is about love and loyalty, not just blood, as shown when the Heap family risks everything for Jenna in the Marram Marshes.
“"The important thing was that he was Septimus Heap, and he was home."”
Family, both biological and adoptive, is a core part of the story. The Heap family's strong loyalty to each other and to Jenna, despite her royal background, drives much of the plot. Silas and Sarah protect Jenna, and their children risk their lives for her. Even when Septimus is found to be the true seventh son, the family accepts him immediately. This theme contrasts with Simon Heap's jealousy and betrayal, showing the destructive nature of a broken family bond. The bond between Septimus and Jenna, though adoptive siblings, is especially strong, showing the chosen family aspect.
“"Families stick together, no matter what."”
The classic struggle between good and evil is shown through Marcia Overstrand and DomDaniel. Marcia, representing light and protective magic, constantly fights against DomDaniel's dark and destructive necromancy. This theme explores the choices people make and their results, as seen with Simon Heap's move into dark magic. The story emphasizes that even young characters like Septimus and Jenna must choose a side and fight for what is right, showing courage and selflessness when facing great darkness, especially during the Battle for the Castle.
“"There is always a choice between Darke and Lighte, Septimus. Always."”
Destiny is explored through Septimus's role as the seventh son of a seventh son, a powerful magical lineage, and Jenna's birthright as Princess. While they both have predetermined paths, the story also highlights their choices and actions. Septimus chooses to accept his apprenticeship and fight DomDaniel, while Jenna chooses to accept her royal duties. This theme suggests that while destiny may set a path, free will determines how one walks it, allowing for personal growth and shaping one's own future, rather than being mere puppets of fate.
“"Destiny is not a road you walk, Septimus. It's a boat you steer."”
Magic is not just a tool, but a living force with its own rules and consequences. The story shows different types of magic: Marcia's powerful ExtraOrdinary Wizardry, Aunt Zelda's ancient and marsh-bound witchery, and DomDaniel's dark and forbidden necromancy. It explores the responsibility that comes with using such power, the dangers of misusing it, and its potential for both creation and destruction. Septimus's journey is about learning to understand and control this power responsibly, from simple charms to complex spells during the main battles.
“"Magic is not just about spells, Septimus. It's about knowing when not to use them."”
A magical birthright that bestows immense magical potential.
This is a classic fantasy trope that designates Septimus Heap as having extraordinary magical abilities. Being the seventh son of a seventh son marks him as destined for greatness in the world of magic, specifically as the next ExtraOrdinary Wizard. This device not only explains his innate talent but also sets him on a specific path, creating a sense of destiny and importance around his character. It also fuels the conflict with DomDaniel, who seeks to corrupt or control such powerful individuals.
A royal heir hidden from her enemies and raised in secret.
Jenna's identity as the lost Princess is a key plot device that drives the initial conflict and the need for her protection. It creates immediate stakes and sets the Heap family on their perilous journey. This device allows for the exploration of themes like identity, belonging, and destiny, as Jenna grapples with her true heritage versus the life she's known. It also provides a clear antagonist in those who seek to harm or control the throne.
The highest magical authority, responsible for the well-being of the Castle.
The title of ExtraOrdinary Wizard, held by Marcia Overstrand, signifies the pinnacle of magical power and responsibility. This device establishes a clear hierarchy within the magical world and provides a powerful mentor figure for Septimus. It also sets up the ultimate goal for Septimus's apprenticeship and the central conflict with DomDaniel, who seeks to usurp this position, making the role a symbol of both power and ethical duty.
A sentient magical vessel that aids in quests and travel.
The Dragon Boat is a unique magical vehicle that possesses its own personality and sentience. It acts as a crucial means of transport for Septimus, Jenna, and their companions on their more adventurous quests, particularly to find the Dragon's Egg. This device provides a dynamic and engaging element to travel, often contributing to the plot through its unique abilities or interactions, and adds a sense of wonder and ancient magic to the world.
An ancient magical artifact intrinsically linked to Septimus's destiny.
The Septimus Stone is a powerful, ancient magical artifact that is discovered by Septimus and is deeply connected to his unique magical lineage and potential. This device serves as a catalyst for unlocking Septimus's latent powers and providing crucial insights into his destiny.
