In modern Verona, an online romance between an African-American girl and a Hispanic boy starts a dangerous feud with a racist gang, forcing them to fight for their love and lives against prejudice.
Romiette Cappelle, a seventeen-year-old African American girl, has vivid nightmares of drowning. She tells her best friend, Destiny, about them. Romiette finds comfort in an online chat room, where she meets a boy named "Spanish Julio." They quickly form a strong online connection. Unbeknownst to them, "Spanish Julio" is Julio Montague, a new student at their school, Veronaville High. Julio, a Mexican American, recently moved to Cincinnati with his family for his father's job. When Romiette and Julio meet in person at a party, they are surprised and happy to recognize each other from their online talks, feeling an immediate, strong attraction.
Romiette and Julio's new romance quickly becomes known at Veronaville High, but not everyone supports it. Their interracial relationship attracts hostile attention from a local gang called The Devil Dogs, known for their racist views and violence. The gang, mostly African American, resents Julio and his relationship with Romiette. They start harassing Julio with veiled threats and taunts, especially at school and in public. Romiette and Julio try to ignore them, but the intimidation grows, making them uneasy and aware of the danger they face just for being together.
The Devil Dogs' harassment becomes more aggressive. Julio is physically attacked in the school hallway, and both he and Romiette receive threatening notes and calls. Romiette's nightmares also become more frequent and disturbing. Worried for their safety, Romiette and Julio tell their closest friends: Destiny, Romiette's spiritual best friend, and Ben, Julio's loyal new friend. They also cautiously tell their parents. Romiette's parents, especially her father, are at first hesitant about her relationship with Julio due to the racial tensions and danger. Julio's parents are more understanding but equally worried, urging caution.
Despite the threats, Romiette and Julio decide to attend the school dance together, wanting to live normally. However, their hope for a peaceful evening ends when The Devil Dogs crash the dance. Led by Malaka, their leader, the gang publicly confronts Romiette and Julio. A tense standoff leads to a physical fight. Julio, Ben, and other friends try to defend Romiette and themselves, but the gang's numbers and aggression are too much. The incident causes chaos and fear, confirming the danger Romiette and Julio are in and leaving them shaken.
After the dance, The Devil Dogs' threats grow, with direct warnings of violence against Romiette and Julio. Feeling trapped and unprotected, and believing their parents and the police are not doing enough, Romiette and Julio make a desperate choice: they will run away together. They plan to meet at the abandoned church on the edge of town, a place they believe will be safe and hidden. Romiette leaves a note for Destiny, vaguely hinting at their plan. They hope to escape the gang and find a place where they can be together without fear, unaware of what will happen.
When Romiette and Julio do not come home, their parents and friends quickly realize something is wrong. Destiny, remembering Romiette's cryptic note and her drowning nightmares, suspects foul play. The families, initially at odds because of their children's secret relationship and racial tensions, unite in their shared fear. A large search begins, involving the police, parents, and friends. Destiny, driven by her intuition and concern, helps guide the search, trying to piece together clues from Romiette's dreams and their last talks to find the missing pair.
As Romiette and Julio go to the abandoned church, The Devil Dogs ambush them. Malaka and his gang members capture them, tie them up, and take them to a secluded spot near the lake. In a cruel act, The Devil Dogs throw Romiette and Julio into the murky water, leaving them to drown. Romiette's nightmares become real as she struggles against the ropes and the cold, dark water. Julio, despite his own terror, tries to help Romiette, clinging to her and using all his strength to keep them both afloat.
Back in town, Destiny has a strong, almost psychic vision that shows her Romiette and Julio in danger, struggling in water. Convinced her vision is real, she urges the search party, including the police and parents, to focus on the lake area, despite initial doubt. Her conviction, combined with her knowledge of Romiette's nightmares, persuades them to follow her lead. They arrive at the lake just in time, finding Romiette and Julio barely alive, clinging to a submerged log. The rescue is difficult, but both are pulled from the water, weak but alive.
Romiette and Julio are taken to the hospital, suffering from hypothermia and shock, but they are expected to recover fully. Their experience brings their families closer, as they understand the depth of their children's love and the danger they faced. Meanwhile, the police, with Romiette and Julio's testimonies and evidence of the ambush, start an investigation. The Devil Dogs, including Malaka, are quickly arrested for assault, kidnapping, and attempted murder. The community feels relief, but the trauma of the event affects everyone involved.
As Romiette and Julio recover, their bond is stronger, forged by shared trauma and survival. They continue their relationship, now with their families' full support. The incident also forces the Veronaville community to confront its racial tensions. While not all problems are instantly solved, the near-tragedy starts important conversations and a commitment to tolerance. Romiette's nightmares slowly fade, replaced by peace and hope for the future. The story ends with Romiette and Julio looking forward, their love a symbol of resilience and triumph over hatred.

The main theme is Romiette and Julio's passionate love enduring despite external pressures. Like their Shakespearean counterparts, their relationship faces strong opposition, mainly from The Devil Dogs, whose racial prejudice threatens their safety. Their initial connection, formed online and solidified in person, shows love's power to overcome differences. The threats, the violence at the dance, and their desperate attempt to run away all show their deep commitment to each other, willing to risk everything for their bond. Their survival and continued love affirm their strong connection.
““Love knows no color. Love knows no race. Love knows no age. Love knows no boundaries.””
Racial prejudice is a dangerous force in the novel, directly driving the conflict. The Devil Dogs gang, motivated by racist beliefs, targets Romiette and Julio because of their interracial relationship. This theme is shown through the gang's taunts, harassment, and violent attacks, which create fear and show the destructive nature of intolerance. The novel also touches on more subtle prejudices in the community, seen in some initial reservations from Romiette's father. The story highlights the need to confront and overcome such biases for a more inclusive society.
““They hated us because we were different, because we dared to cross the line they had drawn.””
While Romiette and Julio's love is central, the steady support of their friends and eventually their families is vital to their survival. Destiny's spiritual intuition and Ben's loyalty help in the search and rescue. The initial divisions between the families, fueled by fear, are overcome by the shared crisis. The community coming together, spurred by tragedy, to search for the missing teens shows how collective action and empathy can fight hatred. This theme emphasizes that even when facing prejudice, a strong support system brings strength and hope.
““Friends are like stars. You don't always see them, but you know they're always there.””
Romiette's recurring nightmares of drowning serve as a plot device and an exploration of precognition and intuition. These dreams are not just random fears but warnings of the danger she will face. Similarly, Destiny's strong intuition and her ability to interpret Romiette's dreams are important in guiding the search party. This theme suggests forces beyond the purely rational are at play, and that listening to one's inner voice or spiritual insights can lead to discoveries. It adds a mystical layer to the realistic portrayal of urban youth and gang violence.
““Sometimes, you just know things. You feel them in your bones, even when your mind tries to tell you otherwise.””
Both Romiette and Julio deal with their identity and finding belonging. Julio, as a newcomer and Mexican American in a mostly African American and white community, struggles to fit in and is targeted for his ethnicity. Romiette, an African American girl, navigates her identity within her community while also experiencing the racial dynamics of her relationship. Their love challenges the social boundaries and expectations of their peers and community. The story shows how they form their own identities, individually and as a couple, defying external pressures and expectations of where they 'belong.'
““We weren't just Romiette and Julio. We were a statement. A challenge to the way things were.””
Romiette's recurring dreams foreshadow her near-drowning.
Romiette's vivid and terrifying nightmares of drowning serve as a powerful form of foreshadowing throughout the novel. These dreams create an ominous atmosphere and build suspense, alerting the reader to impending danger long before it materializes. They also highlight Romiette's vulnerability and her intuitive connection to future events. When she and Julio are thrown into the lake, these nightmares become a terrifying reality, making the moment of peril more impactful and validating the power of her subconscious warnings. This device also allows Destiny to play a critical role in interpreting the dreams and guiding the rescue efforts.
A modern twist on the traditional 'meet-cute,' facilitating an initial connection.
The online chat room is a contemporary plot device that allows Romiette and Julio to form a deep emotional connection before ever meeting in person or knowing each other's racial background. This digital anonymity enables them to connect on a purely intellectual and emotional level, stripping away superficial judgments. It modernizes the 'love at first sight' trope by making it 'love at first chat.' This device emphasizes that their bond is genuine and not based on physical appearance or social status, making their subsequent face-to-face recognition all the more impactful and proving their love transcends the physical and societal barriers.
An external antagonist representing racial prejudice and societal danger.
The Devil Dogs gang, led by Malaka, serves as the primary external antagonist and a crucial plot device. They embody the racial prejudice and intolerance that Romiette and Julio face, driving the central conflict of the story. Their escalating threats, intimidation, and violent actions—culminating in the attempted murder—propel the narrative forward, creating constant tension and raising the stakes. This gang personifies the societal forces that oppose the couple's interracial relationship, making the abstract concept of racism a tangible and terrifying threat. Their presence forces the protagonists to make desperate choices and ultimately unites the community against a common enemy.
A spiritual gift that provides crucial guidance and leads to the rescue.
Destiny's strong intuition and occasional visions act as a significant plot device, particularly in the latter half of the novel. Her ability to interpret Romiette's dreams and later experience a powerful vision of their peril in the water is instrumental in guiding the search party. This device adds a mystical or spiritual element to the narrative, suggesting that some truths are perceived beyond the purely logical. It provides a means for the protagonists to be found, preventing a tragic ending and highlighting the strength of friendship and the power of believing in non-conventional forms of knowledge or premonition.
