Plot Summary

The Stolen VW Van and the New Vampire

Mercy Thompson, a coyote shapeshifter and mechanic, lives in the Tri-Cities area of Washington. She is called to fix a broken-down VW van belonging to Stefan, a vampire, only to find it stolen. While looking into it, she meets Marsilia, a powerful, ancient vampire and Mistress of the local vampire group, who recently arrived in town. Marsilia demands Mercy's help in finding a missing, newly-turned vampire named Amber. She threatens the local werewolf pack if Mercy refuses. Mercy is careful but knows the danger, so she agrees to help Marsilia. She gets Stefan's van back and forms a tense, unwilling connection with the powerful vampire leader.

A Plea for Sanctuary

Mac, a young, inexperienced werewolf, seeks shelter at Mercy's garage. He just turned and killed a man. He fears his new nature and the local werewolf pack, led by Alpha Adam Hauptman, Mercy's attractive and often annoying neighbor. Mac is not part of the pack and fears their punishment for his uncontrolled change. Mercy, despite her complicated relationship with Adam and the pack's strict rules, offers Mac sanctuary. She knows this will put her against Adam and could anger the entire pack, as sheltering a rogue werewolf is a serious violation of their territory rules.

Pack Politics and Personal Risk

Adam Hauptman arrives at Mercy's garage, demanding Mac be given to him. Mercy refuses, stating her right to protect an innocent and challenging Adam's power. This conflict shows their strained relationship: Adam sees Mercy as a potential pack member he wants to protect and control, while Mercy strongly protects her independence as a lone shapeshifter. The pack's enforcer, Darryl, tries to scare Mercy, but she stands firm, forcing Adam to back down for now. This event shows Mercy as an independent person who, despite respecting the pack, will not be easily swayed by their rules or threats.

The Missing Vampires and a Werewolf Attack

Mercy continues looking for Amber, the missing vampire, following Marsilia's orders. Her investigation leads her to find that more newly-turned vampires are disappearing, suggesting a larger plot. Meanwhile, the local werewolf pack suffers a brutal, organized attack, leaving several members badly hurt, including Adam's daughter, Jesse. The attack is unlike anything they've seen, pointing to a highly organized and powerful enemy. This event changes things, forcing Mercy to balance her commitment to Marsilia with her growing concern for the pack's safety and her personal connection to Adam and Jesse.

Faerie Involvement and a Dangerous Alliance

Mercy's investigation into the missing vampires leads her to believe the fae are involved, specifically the Gray Lords, powerful and manipulative faeries. She tells Adam, who is doubtful but desperate for answers after the attack on his pack. Realizing they face a common enemy, Mercy and Adam form a fragile alliance. This alliance is complicated by their past and the tension between them, but the urgent situation forces them to work together, combining their resources and knowledge to find the truth behind the disappearances and attacks.

Discovering the Conspiracy

Working together, Mercy and Adam look deeper into the conspiracy. They find that a rogue fae group holds the missing vampires, including Amber. These faeries use the newly-turned vampires in an experiment, trying to create a new breed of super-vampires, more powerful and controllable than existing ones. The fae experiment with blood magic and old rituals, planning to unleash this new army on the world. This could disrupt the delicate power balance among supernatural groups and threaten both humans and supernaturals.

The Rescue Mission

With the full fae conspiracy known, Mercy, Adam, and the remaining werewolf pack members, along with some help from Stefan, start a daring rescue mission. They enter the fae stronghold, a hidden compound where the vampires are held. The mission is dangerous, as the fae are ready, and their magic is strong. Mercy's unique abilities as a coyote shifter are valuable in getting past the fae defenses and finding the captive vampires. Adam's strength and leadership rally the pack against the powerful fae opposition.

Confrontation and Sacrifice

During the rescue, Mercy confronts the rogue fae leader, an ancient and powerful Gray Lord. The battle is intense, pushing Mercy to her limits. She uses her shifting abilities and cleverness to outsmart the fae's magic. In a key moment, faced with a choice that could save the captive vampires but risk her own life greatly, Mercy makes a selfless decision. She sacrifices her own safety, allowing herself to be badly hurt to stop the fae's ritual and free the imprisoned vampires. This shows her courage and her strong sense of responsibility to protect others.

Aftermath and New Beginnings

After the battle, Mercy is badly hurt but recovers, thanks in part to the werewolves' healing. The fae threat is gone, and the captive vampires are freed, though many are traumatized. Marsilia, while acknowledging Mercy's role, remains a dangerous and unpredictable force. Mac, the young werewolf, decides to join Adam's pack, finding a place and purpose. The book's events strengthen Mercy's bond with Adam and the pack. A growing romantic tension between Mercy and Adam becomes clear, hinting at a deeper relationship to come as the supernatural world continues to unfold around them.

The Coyote's Place

After these events, Mercy solidifies her unique place in the Tri-Cities supernatural community. She is not fully part of the werewolf pack nor completely controlled by the vampires, yet both respect and fear her. Her independence as a coyote shapeshifter allows her to bridge gaps and navigate the complex politics of the various supernatural groups. While she still values her freedom, the book's events have deepened her connections to Adam, the pack, and even figures like Stefan. She accepts that her life will always involve the supernatural, embracing her role as a vital, if sometimes unwilling, protector and problem-solver in their world.

Themes & Insights

Independence vs. Belonging

Mercy Thompson strongly values her independence. This is clear in her solitary nature as a coyote shapeshifter among more communal supernaturals like werewolves and vampires. She resists joining Adam's pack, fearing she will lose her freedom and identity. However, throughout the book, she repeatedly puts herself in danger for the pack and individual members like Jesse and Mac. This shows a deep need for connection and belonging, even if she will not admit it. This internal conflict is central to her character as she balances her desire for freedom with her growing ties to the supernatural community, especially with Adam and the werewolves. For example, she offers Mac sanctuary, knowing it will anger Adam, putting her personal code above pack law. Yet, she later works closely with Adam to save the pack from the fae.

I was a coyote, a loner by nature. And I was fine with that. Mostly.

The Nature of Power and Authority

The book explores different kinds of power: the physical strength of werewolves, the ancient, manipulative influence of vampires like Marsilia, and the subtle, often terrifying magic of the fae. Mercy, though physically weaker than many supernaturals, uses a different kind of power through her intelligence, cleverness, and unique abilities as a shapeshifter. The novel questions who holds authority and how it should be used. Adam's Alpha authority is challenged by Mercy's independence, while Marsilia's absolute control over her group is contrasted with her inability to handle the fae threat without outside help. The story suggests that true power is not just about dominance, but also about responsibility and the ability to adapt.

Power isn't just about being stronger. It's about knowing how to use what you've got.

Prejudice and Acceptance

The supernatural world of 'Moon Called' is full of prejudice between different species. Werewolves do not trust vampires, fae manipulate everyone, and humans are mostly unaware or scared. Mercy, as a rare and unique shapeshifter, often faces suspicion and misunderstanding from all sides. Her ability to change between human and coyote forms, and her in-between status, allows her to bridge these divides but also makes her an outsider. The book shows how characters overcome these ingrained biases, often out of necessity, to work together against a common threat. For example, Adam and Mercy, despite their species differences and personal tensions, must accept each other's abilities to fight the fae. This leads to a deeper understanding and respect.

Being different wasn't a flaw. It was just different.

Family, Chosen and Blood

The idea of family, both biological and chosen, is a strong theme. Adam's responsibility for his daughter, Jesse, and his pack as a whole, highlights the importance of blood ties and community bonds. Mercy, raised by a fae and living mostly independently, first sees family in a more flexible way. However, her actions throughout the book show her growing commitment to her chosen family: Adam, Jesse, and even the wider werewolf pack. She risks her life for them, eventually realizing that while she may not be a blood relative or a pack member by rite, she is deeply connected to them through shared experiences and loyalty. Mac's journey from a lone, scared werewolf to finding a new family within Adam's pack further shows this theme.

Family wasn't always blood. Sometimes it was the people you chose.

Plot Devices & Literary Techniques

The Walker Ability

Mercy's unique shapeshifting power and its implications.

Mercy's ability to shift into a coyote at will, a rare 'walker' power, is central to the plot. Unlike werewolves, she retains her consciousness and human intellect in her animal form, making her an exceptional scout, tracker, and fighter. This ability allows her to navigate dangerous situations, gather information stealthily, and escape threats that would overwhelm others. It also sets her apart from other supernaturals, making her an outsider but also a valuable, often underestimated, asset in the supernatural community, allowing her to move between human and supernatural worlds with relative ease.

The Love Triangle

The romantic tension between Mercy, Adam, and Samuel.

The simmering romantic tension between Mercy, Adam, and Samuel acts as a significant emotional driver and source of conflict. Samuel, Mercy's ex-lover, still carries a torch for her, while Adam, her Alpha neighbor, is clearly attracted to her and desires her for his pack. This dynamic complicates their alliances and personal interactions, adding layers of jealousy, protectiveness, and unspoken desires to the already dangerous supernatural conflicts. It forces Mercy to confront her own feelings and her desire for independence versus the allure of a strong, protective partner, influencing her decisions and relationships throughout the story.

The Secrecy of the Supernatural World

The hidden nature of supernaturals from the human world.

The supernatural world largely operates in secret from ordinary humans, maintaining a delicate Masquerade. This secrecy creates tension and danger, as characters must constantly guard against exposure while battling internal and external threats. Mercy's garage serves as a neutral ground where supernaturals interact, but the need to maintain their hidden existence influences their actions, particularly when dealing with rogue elements like the fae who threaten to expose them. This device heightens the stakes, as any major supernatural conflict risks revealing their existence and disrupting the fragile peace.

The Faerie Conspiracy

The overarching plot by rogue fae to create a new vampire army.

The revelation of a rogue fae faction attempting to create a new, controlled vampire army serves as the primary external conflict. This conspiracy introduces a powerful, ancient, and manipulative enemy whose actions threaten the balance of power among all supernatural factions. It forces disparate groups like werewolves and vampires to grudgingly work together, and pushes Mercy into a central, dangerous role. The fae's use of blood magic and ancient rituals highlights their ancient power and unpredictable nature, making them a formidable and mysterious threat.
