A king battles to rebuild his nation and forge alliances while confronting the dark magic threatening to consume his kingdom and soul.
King Nikolai Lantsov of Ravka is haunted by a winged beast, a lasting effect from his transformation by the Darkling's magic. The beast appears more often and is more violent, causing him great pain. He confides in Zoya Nazyalensky, a powerful Grisha Squaller and General, and Isaak, a young monk from the Fjerdan border. They are among the few who know his secret. Ravka is in a difficult state, recovering from civil war, low on money, and threatened by neighboring nations, especially Fjerda. Nikolai tries to secure an alliance with Shu Han through a proposed marriage to Princess Ehri, seeing it as a necessary sacrifice for his country.
Princess Ehri of Shu Han arrives in Os Alta with her group, including her older sister, Princess Zhu. Nikolai negotiates, trying to secure the alliance while dealing with Shu Han's demands and his own struggle with the beast. Meanwhile, Zoya Nazyalensky investigates reports of Grisha with new, uncontrolled powers in Ravka. She travels to a village where a young Grisha girl shows dangerous abilities, confirming something is wrong with Grisha power. Zoya suspects a link to the Fold and the Darkling's magic, increasing her concern for Nikolai and Ravka.
Realizing the beast is getting worse and new Grisha powers might be connected, Nikolai decides to find a cure. He, Zoya, and Isaak travel to the White Island, a secluded monastery said to hold ancient Grisha knowledge and home to the surviving original Grisha. They hope to find a way to remove the demon from Nikolai. The journey is dangerous, as Nikolai struggles to control the beast, which sometimes takes over his body, causing destruction and almost exposing him. Isaak is a resourceful and observant companion, offering insights from his unique view as a non-Grisha monk familiar with old texts.
On the White Island, Nikolai, Zoya, and Isaak find a small, reclusive community of Grisha monks and scholars, led by Yuri, a powerful Grisha who seems to understand dark magic. They learn that the beast is not just a side effect of the Darkling's magic, but a distinct entity, a manifestation of dark magic itself, feeding on his fear and pain. The monks reveal that the only way to banish it is through a risky ritual that requires great Grisha power and a deep understanding of life and death. Zoya begins training under Yuri, pushing her Squaller abilities to new limits.
At the same time, Nina Zenik, a powerful Grisha Heartrender, is on a secret mission in Fjerda, disguised as a Fjerdan socialite named Mila. Her goal is to rescue Grisha hunted and imprisoned by the Drüskelle, Fjerda's Grisha-hunting elite. She works with Hanne, a young Fjerdan noblewoman who secretly has Grisha abilities and sympathizes with their cause. Nina discovers that the Fjerdans are not just imprisoning Grisha; they are experimenting on them, trying to remove their powers and even weaponize them. She also finds a disturbing link to the jesperda flower, a plant with mind-altering properties the Fjerdans use on Grisha.
On the White Island, the ritual to remove the beast from Nikolai begins. It is a hard and painful process, requiring Zoya to channel immense power and Nikolai to face his darkest parts. Just as they seem to be succeeding, Yuri, the monk guiding them, reveals his true intentions. He is a loyal follower of the Darkling and seeks to bring him back to life by using Nikolai as a vessel and harnessing collective Grisha power. The ritual is corrupted, strengthening the beast instead of banishing it, allowing Yuri to manipulate Nikolai's internal struggle for his own purposes. Zoya realizes they have been trapped.
In Fjerda, Nina and Hanne investigate the Fjerdan experiments further. They discover that the Fjerdans are trying to neutralize Grisha powers and replicate them using jesperda and other dark rituals. Nina realizes the horror of their methods and the suffering of the imprisoned Grisha. During their investigation, Nina uncovers Hanne's secret: Hanne is a Grisha herself, a powerful Corporalki who has been suppressing her abilities and living in fear. This revelation strengthens their bond and their resolve to fight injustice.
Back on the White Island, the corrupted ritual reaches its peak. The beast within Nikolai fully manifests, but it is not just a creature of dark magic; it also has the Darkling's consciousness. Yuri reveals that the Darkling had foreseen his own death and manipulated events, including Nikolai's transformation, to ensure his return. The Darkling, now partly resurrected through Nikolai's body, tries to take full control. Zoya, in a desperate act, unleashes her full power, going beyond anything she has ever done, trying to sever the connection between Nikolai and the Darkling, even if it costs Nikolai's life.
In a confrontation, Zoya Nazyalensky, pushed to her limits, undergoes a transformation. She taps into the essence of Ravka's land and sky, becoming a living storm, a powerful Squaller unlike any other. Her power briefly overwhelms the Darkling's influence, allowing Nikolai to regain some control. However, the Darkling, still connected to Nikolai, escapes the White Island. His consciousness is now separate from Nikolai but still a threat. Nikolai is left weakened, his curse not fully lifted, and the knowledge that the Darkling is alive and free, though weakened, weighs on him.
Nikolai, Zoya, and Isaak return to Os Alta, where the Shu Han delegates are still present. The alliance with Princess Ehri is solidified, though political maneuvering remains complex. Nikolai is now burdened with the Darkling's return and the lingering threat of his curse. Meanwhile, Nina Zenik, having exposed the Fjerdan experiments, is involved in a larger conflict. She discovers that the Fjerdans are planning a full-scale invasion of Ravka, and the new Grisha powers appearing across Ravka are connected to their plans. Nina and Hanne prepare to warn Ravka and rally resistance in Fjerda.
Nikolai Lantsov, despite the ritual's partial success, is still haunted by the beast, though its appearances are now less frequent and aggressive. The encounter with the Darkling makes him question his identity and his right to rule. He understands that the fight against the Darkling is not over and that his own body could still be a weapon against Ravka. He relies on Zoya and Isaak, their bond strengthened by shared trauma. The political marriage to Princess Ehri is set, a practical decision for Ravka's future, but one that further isolates Nikolai emotionally. He struggles with the sacrifices he must continue to make for his country.
As Nikolai tries to stabilize Ravka and secure his new alliance, news from Nina in Fjerda confirms the worst: the Fjerdans are preparing for war. Their new Grisha-suppressing and enhancing technologies pose a threat. The appearance of uncontrolled Grisha powers across Ravka is now understood to be a symptom of a larger, sinister plot, possibly linked to the Fjerdan's experiments and lingering dark magic from the Fold. Ravka, still recovering from civil war, is on the brink of another, potentially more devastating conflict. Nikolai, Zoya, and the Grisha Army prepare for war.

The Antagonist
The Darkling, though seemingly defeated, orchestrates his partial resurrection, returning as a potent, if weakened, threat to Ravka.
Nikolai Lantsov constantly struggles with the pressure of ruling a war-torn country. He makes deep personal sacrifices, like a politically motivated marriage to Princess Ehri, for Ravka's good. His internal struggle with the beast symbolizes the hidden costs of leadership and the private battles leaders fight while appearing strong. Zoya also shows this theme, always putting Ravka and Nikolai's safety before her own desires, as seen when she pushes her powers to save him.
“A good king is a living shield for his people. He can’t be afraid to bleed.”
Both Nikolai and Hanne struggle with their identities. Nikolai is tormented by the beast within him, fearing it defines him and makes him unworthy of his crown. He wants to be free of it, but ultimately must confront and accept this monstrous part of himself to move forward. Hanne, a closeted Grisha in Fjerda, lives a lie, constantly fearing exposure. Her journey involves embracing her Grisha heritage and finding the courage to be herself, a powerful act of self-acceptance in a hostile environment.
“Monsters are not born, they are made. And often they are made by those who would call themselves heroes.”
The novel explores different aspects of power: political power by Nikolai, magical power by Grisha, and the corrupting influence of dark magic. The Darkling's return shows how power, even when seemingly defeated, can reassert itself through manipulation and lingering darkness. The Fjerdan's experiments on Grisha show the unethical pursuit of power by taking others' abilities. Zoya's transformation into a more elemental Grisha shows power as a force of nature, capable of creation and destruction, depending on the user's intent and control.
“Power is a knife. You can use it to cut the world into pieces, or you can use it to mend it.”
Nina Zenik's story is shaped by her grief for Matthias Helvar. Her mission in Fjerda, while driven by a desire to help Grisha, is also a way for her to cope with her loss and find new purpose. Memories of Matthias inspire her to fight harder and protect the innocent. Nikolai also carries the losses of the civil war and the personal toll of his curse, which affects his ability to form close relationships. The characters learn that while grief may never fully disappear, it is possible to honor the past by fighting for a better future.
“Grief was a house with a thousand rooms, and she was trapped in every one of them.”
Ravka's political situation is dominated by the need for alliances. Nikolai's proposed marriage to Princess Ehri is a strategic move to secure Shu Han's support, showing the often-fragile nature of international relations. Yuri's betrayal on the White Island is a reminder that trust can be easily broken, and perceived allies can hide sinister plans. Nina's alliance with Hanne, however, shows how unexpected bonds can form across cultures, driven by shared values and a common enemy, proving that true alliances are built on trust and shared purpose.
“Trust is a blade. It can protect you, or it can cut you deep.”
A physical and mental manifestation of dark magic within Nikolai.
The demonic curse within Nikolai, a lingering effect of the Darkling's merzost, serves as the central conflict for his character. It is a constant threat, forcing him to keep his secret and driving his quest for a cure. It physically transforms him into a winged monster and mentally torments him, representing his internal struggles and the enduring scars of war. This device creates high stakes, as Nikolai risks not only his life but also his sanity and his kingdom if the beast takes over, and ultimately sets the stage for the Darkling's partial resurrection.
A secluded location holding ancient Grisha knowledge and housing a deceptive mentor.
The White Island monastery functions as a classic quest destination, a place of ancient wisdom and potential salvation. It serves as a narrative catalyst, drawing Nikolai, Zoya, and Isaak to a remote location where they hope to find a cure for the curse. However, it also acts as a trap, as the supposed mentor, Yuri, is revealed to be a loyalist of the Darkling, twisting the quest for a cure into a means for the Darkling's resurrection. This device allows for exposition on Grisha history and merzost, while also providing a setting for a major betrayal and climax.
A covert plot to control and weaponize Grisha powers using jesperda.
The Fjerdan experiments on Grisha serve as the primary external conflict in Nina's storyline. This device not only highlights the brutal prejudice against Grisha but also introduces a new, dangerous threat to Ravka. The use of jesperda and the attempts to strip or weaponize Grisha powers raise ethical questions about scientific advancement and control. It establishes Fjerda as a clear antagonist with dangerous capabilities, foreshadowing a larger conflict and providing Nina with a compelling personal mission that intertwines with Ravka's broader security concerns.
A strategic union intended to secure Ravka's future and alliances.
Nikolai's proposed marriage to Princess Ehri of Shu Han acts as a significant political plot device. It underscores Ravka's precarious position after the civil war, highlighting its need for financial stability and strong alliances. This device creates tension around Nikolai's personal desires versus his duties as king. It forces him into a pragmatic decision that impacts his emotional well-being, while also introducing the Shu Han as a new political player and potential ally, complicating the international relations of the Grishaverse.
