In a frozen, post-apocalyptic New Vegas, a blackjack dealer with a dangerous secret gambles on a mercenary crew and a cocky runner to find a mythical warm paradise, risking her heart and her life against sinister magic and treacherous lies.
Natasha Kestal, a seventeen-year-old who can manipulate ice, works as a blackjack dealer at Caesar's Palace casino in New Vegas. The world is a frozen wasteland after an event called the Big Freeze. Life is hard, with few resources and the Authority in control. Nat dreams of escaping to a mythical place called 'the Blue,' rumored to be warm and safe for people with powers like hers. She saves her small earnings, hoping to pay for transport, but the journey is dangerous and expensive.
While dealing, Nat sees Ryan Wesson, a charming 'runner' known for his illegal deals and ability to travel the frozen lands outside the city. Wes, as he is known, visits Caesar's often, and Nat is careful of his reputation. However, she overhears him talking about a possible route to the Blue. Desperate, Nat asks Wes for a deal: she will pay him to take her to the Blue. Wes, at first not interested, becomes curious about her determination and the money she offers, agreeing to think about her offer after some tests and a large down payment.
Wes introduces Nat to his crew: the tough and loyal biker, Jax; the quiet, tech-smart twins, Li and Lu; and the mysterious healer, Elder. To show her worth and survival skills, Wes takes Nat on a dangerous supply run through the Ice Desert, a place with dangers like 'ice hounds' and deadly blizzards. During the run, Nat's ice powers accidentally appear, saving the group from an attack, but she quickly hides it, fearing discovery. Her actions, despite the hidden magic, earn her respect from the crew, especially Wes.
Throughout New Vegas, rumors spread about the Sorcerers’ Guild, a powerful group believed to control the city's hidden magic. These sorcerers are said to be responsible for the city's upkeep and its darker secrets, often harming those with new abilities. Nat knows these rumors, as her uncontrolled ice magic makes her a possible target. The fear of being found by the Sorcerers’ Guild, who exploit or eliminate magic users, makes her want to reach the Blue even more, where she believes she will be safe.
As they spend more time together, traveling and preparing for the journey to the Blue, Nat and Wes's relationship changes. Their early teasing and distrust turn into a reluctant friendship, then a clear attraction. Wes, despite his rough outside, shows moments of being caring and protective, especially towards Nat. Nat finds herself drawn to his confidence and charm, despite her better judgment. Their shared goal to reach the Blue and the dangers they face together create a bond that goes beyond their first deal, suggesting a deeper connection.
During a part of their journey, the crew is attacked by Authority agents, who have learned about Wes's illegal activities. In the confusion, Nat has to use her ice powers openly to protect Wes and the others, fully showing her abilities. The Authority, seeing her unique and dangerous magic, specifically targets and captures her. Wes and the rest of the crew are forced to leave, sad and helpless as Nat is taken away, now a prisoner of the system she wanted to escape, and a possible tool for the Sorcerers’ Guild.
Natasha is taken to a hidden facility, the headquarters of the Sorcerers’ Guild, led by the mysterious Master Alaric. Instead of being killed, Alaric reveals that he has known about her powers for some time and has been subtly planning events. He explains that the Sorcerers’ Guild is not simply evil, but a complex group tasked with controlling and using magic for the 'greater good,' often through force. Alaric tries to manipulate Nat, promising her power and safety if she joins them, and revealing that the Blue is not what she thinks.
Meanwhile, Wes, feeling guilty and with his growing feelings for Nat, refuses to leave her. He gathers his crew, along with some unexpected allies from his past, and plans a daring mission to get into the Sorcerers’ Guild headquarters. The rescue is dangerous, as they navigate the guild's defenses and magic traps. Wes's determination is strong, driven by a desire to make up for his perceived failure and to save the woman he has come to love, even if it means risking his own life and his friends' lives.
During Wes's entry, Nat confronts Master Alaric. He reveals that her parents were powerful magic-users also targeted by the Guild, and that Nat has a rare and strong form of ice magic. Alaric tries to convince her that the Blue is a myth, or worse, a trap, and that her true path is with the Sorcerers’ Guild, helping them control the world's magic. Just as Alaric is about to force Nat into a magic bond, Wes and his crew burst in, creating a chaotic distraction. Nat, fueled by anger and the wish for freedom, unleashes a burst of her magic.
In a final battle, Nat fully uses her ice powers, creating a devastating wave of frost and ice that damages the Sorcerers’ Guild's defenses. She works with Wes and his crew, fighting through the remaining guards and magic barriers. Though they escape Master Alaric and the Guild, they are now on the run, more exposed than ever. The truths about the Blue and her family leave Nat shaken, but her bond with Wes is stronger. They decide to continue their search for the Blue, together, knowing the journey ahead is even more dangerous but now with a better understanding of their enemy and Nat's true power.

The Antagonist
The Authority serves as a constant oppressive force throughout the story.
The story is about Natasha's desperate search for 'the Blue,' a mythical place where she believes she can be free and belong. This idea is also seen in Wes's own wish for a life beyond New Vegas's limits and dangers. The harsh, controlled world of New Vegas shows how important freedom is, and the constant threat of discovery for Nat's powers emphasizes her desire for acceptance. The Blue represents an ideal, a strong contrast to their dystopian reality, driving their dangerous journey.
“'The Blue. A place where the sun still shines and the waters are turquoise. A place where Nat won’t be persecuted, even if her darkest secret comes to light.'”
Natasha's journey is about her accepting and using her ice abilities. At first, her powers cause fear and secrecy, something she hides due to the threat from the Sorcerers’ Guild and the Authority. However, out of necessity and in extreme danger, she is forced to use them. By the end, she not only uses her powers but controls them with new confidence, turning them from a burden into a tool for survival and defense. This theme explores how true strength comes from accepting and mastering one's unique gifts.
“'She was a walking blizzard, a force of nature unleashed, and for the first time, she felt truly alive.'”
In a world full of lies, danger, and scarcity, the growing romance between Natasha and Ryan Wesson provides a strong contrast. Their relationship starts with distrust and a business agreement, but through shared danger and real connection, it grows into deep affection and mutual trust. The theme explores how love can grow even in the hardest places, offering hope, motivation, and a reason to fight. Their ability to trust each other, despite constant betrayal, becomes important for their survival and emotional well-being, showing the strength of human connection.
“'Can true love survive the lies? Fiery hearts collide in this fantastic tale of the evil men do and the awesome power within us all.'”
The novel explores different forms of control and oppression by the Authority and the Sorcerers’ Guild. The Authority maintains social order through strict laws and watching, limiting freedom and chances for most citizens. The Sorcerers’ Guild, while saying it keeps magic balanced, uses manipulation and force, trying to control or exploit magic-users like Nat. This theme asks who holds power, how it is used, and the ethics of controlling people for a supposed 'greater good.' It highlights the struggle against systems that try to take away people's independence and unique identities.
“'The Sorcerers’ Guild is not simply evil, but a complex organization tasked with controlling and harnessing magic for the 'greater good,' often through coercive means.'”
A mythical, warm paradise that drives the protagonists' quest.
The Blue serves as the primary MacGuffin in 'Frozen.' It is a mythical, tropical paradise rumored to exist somewhere beyond the frozen wastes, a place where the sun still shines and magic users like Nat can live freely and safely. Its exact location, nature, and even its existence are largely unknown, making it a powerful motivational force for Nat and Wes. The ambiguity surrounding the Blue allows it to represent hope, freedom, and a better future, compelling the characters through immense dangers and driving the entire plot forward. Its eventual reveal as potentially more complex than a simple paradise adds depth to its function.
Natasha's secret cryokinetic abilities that shape her fears and destiny.
Natasha's hidden cryokinetic powers are a central plot device. Initially, they are a source of immense fear and secrecy for her, driving her desire to escape New Vegas and the watchful eyes of the Sorcerers’ Guild. The accidental manifestations of her powers create tension and propel plot points, such as saving the crew during a supply run or leading to her capture. As the story progresses, her powers become a tool for survival and ultimately, a symbol of her self-acceptance and growing strength, allowing her to challenge the oppressive forces that seek to control her.
A frozen, post-apocalyptic New Vegas that creates constant tension and motivation.
The dystopian setting of New Vegas, a once-glamorous city now blanketed in perpetual ice and ruled by the oppressive Authority, serves as a crucial plot device. The harsh environment, scarcity of resources, and constant dangers (like ice hounds and blizzards) create inherent conflict and tension. This setting directly motivates Nat's desire for escape to the Blue and frames the illicit activities of Wes and his crew as necessary for survival. It also provides a stark contrast to the idealized Blue, amplifying the characters' longing for a better world and emphasizing the stakes of their journey.
A secret, powerful organization that controls magic and serves as a primary antagonist.
The Sorcerers’ Guild operates as a shadowy and powerful antagonist, manipulating events from behind the scenes. Initially, they are a whispered threat, a source of fear for magic users like Nat. Their existence and rumored methods of control directly influence Nat's secrecy about her powers and her urgency to flee. When Nat is captured, the Guild becomes a tangible threat, revealing their true motives and the extent of their power. They represent the forces of control and manipulation, driving much of the conflict and forcing Nat to confront the nature of her own abilities and the world's magical hierarchy.
