A deadly dragon with a past of fiery destruction grapples with her lethal gift and a newfound desire for friendship, as she hunts down her tyrannical former queen to protect the only dragons who ever showed her kindness.
Peril, a SkyWing with firescales, lives at Jade Mountain Academy, struggling to control her abilities and her reputation. She is loyal to Clay, the only dragon who has shown her kindness. When Queen Scarlet, her former queen, sends a threatening message to the academy, Peril decides to hunt Scarlet down and stop her. As Peril gets ready to leave, Turtle, a SeaWing prince, insists on going with her. He says his friends, Kinkajou and Winter, went after Scarlet and have not come back, and he wants to find them. Peril initially does not want him to come, fearing she might burn him, but he keeps trying, showing her a hidden, enchanted scroll he uses to convince her.
Peril and Turtle follow Scarlet's path of destruction, which leads them to a desolate part of the SkyWing territory. They find a hidden cave where they discover Kinkajou, the RainWing, in a deep, enchanted sleep. Turtle, using his secret animus magic, tries to wake her, but the spell is too strong. He tells Peril he is an animus, a secret he has kept. They also meet a strange, reclusive SkyWing named Chameleon, who seems to know more than he says. Peril feels a connection to him. Chameleon hints at a way to remove Peril's firescales.
Chameleon says he is Peril's father. He enchanted himself to change his appearance and escape the SkyWing arena. He confesses that he originally enchanted Peril's egg to have firescales, thinking it would make her powerful, but later regretted it. He offers Peril a magical enchanted earring that will remove her firescales, making her a normal SkyWing. This news changes Peril's understanding of her past and who she is. She considers the big decision: to give up the power that has defined her, the power Queen Scarlet used, but also the power that has made her feared and alone. Turtle advises her to think about the consequences, especially her loyalty to Clay.
After thinking for a long time, Peril decides to accept the earring from her father, Chameleon. The firescales disappear, leaving her with normal, cool scales. The change is big; she feels vulnerable and weak but also free. Her attention immediately turns to finding Winter and stopping Scarlet. They track Scarlet to a hidden stronghold. During their journey, Peril experiences the world differently without her firescales, realizing how much she relied on them for protection and how much she feared causing harm. She also starts to understand Turtle better, appreciating his quiet strength and intelligence, especially his animus abilities.
Peril, now without her firescales, and Turtle get into Queen Scarlet's hidden fortress. They find Winter, the IceWing, held captive in a prison designed to exploit his IceWing body. Scarlet reveals her plan: she intends to use Winter to lure the entire Jade Mountain Academy into a deadly trap, seeking revenge on all who defied her, especially Clay. Peril, feeling the absence of her firescales, understands the danger she is in and Scarlet's cruelty. Turtle, using his animus magic, tries to subtly undermine Scarlet's enchantments and help Winter escape, while Peril tries to appear obedient to Scarlet to gain time.
Scarlet's trap is set, and she reveals her true intention: to broadcast a live, gruesome battle to all of Pyrrhia using enchanted mirrors, making a spectacle of her revenge. She expects Peril, now seemingly powerless, to rejoin her. Peril, however, is conflicted. She sees Scarlet's cruelty and realizes that her loyalty to Clay and her new friends at Jade Mountain Academy is stronger than any lingering fear or obligation to Scarlet. A fierce battle starts as dragons from Jade Mountain, including Clay, arrive to rescue their friends. Peril, despite not having firescales, fights bravely, using her strength and agility.
During the battle, Peril realizes that without her firescales, she cannot protect her friends against Scarlet's forces. She confronts her father, Chameleon, who is also there, having been manipulated by Scarlet. He admits his regret for enchanting her and says that Scarlet had forced him to create other dangerous enchantments. In a moment of desperation and clarity, Peril makes a choice: she removes the earring and allows her firescales to return, embracing who she is to protect those she loves. The sudden return of her devastating power changes the battle, forcing Scarlet to retreat.
With Scarlet defeated and retreating, Peril and Turtle focus on Kinkajou. Turtle, now more confident in his animus abilities, breaks the enchantment that held Kinkajou in her magical sleep. Kinkajou awakens, confused but safe. They also discover that the magical objects Scarlet used to broadcast her show were enchanted by Chameleon under duress. Chameleon expresses deep regret for his actions and for the suffering he caused Peril and others. Peril, though still dealing with her past and her powers, feels a sense of resolution about who she is.
Peril returns to Jade Mountain Academy, no longer conflicted about her firescales. She has chosen to accept them as part of herself, realizing they are a tool she can control for good, not just destruction. Clay is happy to see her safe. She has a new understanding and appreciation for Turtle, who proved himself a brave and powerful ally. Chameleon, her father, is given a chance to make up for his past, and Peril starts to build a more complex relationship with him. Peril's journey has strengthened her loyalty to her friends and her place at the academy, accepting her unique identity and power with a new sense of purpose and self-acceptance.

The Mentioned
Revealed as Chameleon's past, adding depth to his character and the history of animus magic.
The main theme is Peril's struggle to accept her firescales as part of her identity. She first sees them as a curse, making her a monster, and wants to get rid of them to become 'normal'. However, through her journey, she realizes that her powers are part of her and can be used for good. Her choice to reclaim her firescales means she accepts who she is, rather than trying to fit others' expectations or getting rid of what makes her unique. This theme is also seen in Chameleon's own struggle with identity, constantly changing forms to escape his past.
“Maybe I could be a monster for good, for once. Maybe I could be Clay’s monster, to keep him safe.”
The book explores the two sides of power, especially Peril's firescales and Turtle's animus magic. Peril's power is destructive, but she learns to control it and use it to protect her friends, changing from Queen Scarlet's weapon to a guardian. Turtle hides his animus magic, fearing its corrupting influence, but learns to use it responsibly and selflessly for good. The story shows that power itself is neutral; the user's intent and choices determine if it is used for good or evil. Scarlet's abuse of power and Peril and Turtle's protective use of theirs are examples.
“It’s not the magic that’s evil. It’s the dragon who uses it.”
Loyalty drives many characters, especially Peril. Her strong loyalty to Clay is what first makes her confront Scarlet. Throughout her journey, her loyalties change and grow, moving from fear-based obedience to Scarlet to a true, deep devotion to her new friends at Jade Mountain Academy. Turtle's loyalty to Kinkajou and Winter also moves the plot, as he bravely goes with Peril into danger. The strength of these bonds helps the characters overcome the enemy, showing the impact of true friendship.
“I’m not fighting for Scarlet. I’m fighting for Clay. And for all of you.”
The past affects several characters. Peril is haunted by her actions under Queen Scarlet's command and by her firescales, which she believes are an inescapable part of her dark history. Chameleon is literally running from his past, having changed his identity many times to escape the consequences of his animus magic and the fear he caused. The story explores how hard it is to face past mistakes and the chance for redemption. Peril's eventual acceptance of her father, despite his past actions, suggests a way toward forgiveness and moving forward.
“He chose to enchant me, but I can choose what I do with it now.”
Peril's lethal, defining physical trait.
Firescales are a rare and deadly SkyWing mutation where a dragon's scales are superheated, causing instant death to anyone they touch. This device is central to Peril's character and the plot. It serves as both a source of immense power and a profound curse, isolating her and making her a weapon for Queen Scarlet. The option to remove them, then her choice to reclaim them, drives Peril's character arc, forcing her to confront her identity and the nature of her power. It symbolizes her internal struggle between her destructive potential and her desire for connection.
A powerful, soul-costing enchantment ability.
Animus magic is a rare and potent form of magic that allows a dragon to enchant objects or even other dragons, but it is said to slowly corrupt the user's soul. This device is crucial, as Turtle is a secret animus, and Peril's firescales were a result of her father Chameleon's animus enchantment. It introduces elements of hidden power, moral dilemmas, and the consequences of wielding such immense ability. Turtle's careful, selfless use of his magic contrasts with Chameleon's regrettable past enchantments, highlighting the theme of responsibility and the potential for both good and evil within this power.
A magical item capable of removing Peril's firescales.
The enchanted earring, created by Chameleon, is a pivotal plot device that offers Peril the choice to shed her firescales and become a 'normal' dragon. This object directly instigates Peril's core conflict over her identity. Its temporary use allows Peril to experience vulnerability and a different perspective, ultimately leading to her deliberate choice to reclaim her firescales. It serves as a physical manifestation of the choice between conformity and self-acceptance, and a means for Chameleon to offer atonement for his past actions.
An enchantment used by Scarlet to incapacitate Kinkajou.
The magical sleep spell placed on Kinkajou by Queen Scarlet is a plot device that serves multiple purposes. It highlights Scarlet's cruelty and manipulative use of magic (via Chameleon's unwilling enchantments). It also provides a strong motivation for Turtle to accompany Peril and eventually reveal his animus abilities in order to save his friend. The struggle to break the spell showcases the power of the magic involved and the determination of Kinkajou's friends, ultimately allowing for Turtle's growth in confidence as an animus.
