A clockwork army threatens Victorian London, and a young woman caught between two brothers must use her angelic power to save the world and change her own fate.
The story begins with Tessa Gray and Jem Carstairs engaged. This decision brings both happiness and sadness, given Jem's worsening health from his yin fen addiction. Will Herondale, still in love with Tessa but held back by his false curse, struggles with his feelings while staying loyal to Jem. The London Institute, led by Charlotte Branwell, is under pressure from the Clave to find Mortmain and his Infernal Devices. After the attack on the Paris Institute, the danger is urgent. Sophie Collins and Gideon Lightwood grow closer, and Cecily Herondale, Will's sister, arrives at the Institute. She claims to bring Will home but secretly observes Charlotte for the Clave.
To save Jem, Will travels to the Wales countryside to find warlock Ragnor Fell, hoping for a cure. Ragnor is gone, and Will meets Magnus Bane, who reveals Mortmain murdered Ragnor. Magnus also shares a key detail: the 'curse' Will believed he carried, that anyone he loved would die, was a lie told by a demon. This news breaks Will's self-imposed isolation and lets him face his true feelings for Tessa, though the timing is difficult given Tessa's engagement to Jem.
Back at the Institute, Will, now free of his false curse, tells Tessa he loves her deeply. He explains the demon's lie and his years of pain, offering her a future with him. Tessa, still loving Will but committed to Jem, is conflicted. Meanwhile, Jem's health declines quickly, and he suffers a severe attack, nearly dying. The Institute's search for Mortmain becomes more urgent as they realize time is running out for Jem and their own safety.
Determined to marry Jem before he dies, Tessa and Jem prepare for their wedding. The ceremony is a bittersweet event, with close friends and family at the Institute. However, before the vows are complete, Mortmain attacks. His Infernal Devices, now stronger and more numerous, break through the Institute's defenses. Mortmain appears in the chaos, and with his automatons, he abducts Tessa. He reveals she is the final piece he needs for his plan: to animate his entire army with her unique angelic power.
After Tessa's abduction and near death, Jem makes a sacrifice: he becomes a Silent Brother. This saves his life by cutting off his connection to yin fen, but at the cost of his memories and his identity as Jem Carstairs. He becomes Brother Zachariah, a powerful being but no longer the man Tessa loved. Devastated but determined, the Shadowhunters, now including Cecily Herondale and Gabriel Lightwood, seek help from the Iron Sisters, an order of female Shadowhunters who make weapons. They hope to understand Mortmain's automatons and defeat them.
Charlotte and Henry Branwell, with Magnus Bane's help, plan to infiltrate Mortmain's hidden fortress in the countryside. They learn Mortmain plans to use Tessa's power to create an army of automatons that can mimic Shadowhunters, making them unstoppable. During their planning, they discover a betrayal: Consul Wayland, a high-ranking Clave member, is Mortmain's accomplice, giving him information and resources. This news increases the urgency and danger, as they realize the Clave itself has been compromised.
The Shadowhunters attack Mortmain's fortress. A fierce battle breaks out between the Shadowhunters and Mortmain's automatons. Tessa, imprisoned and aware she is the key to Mortmain's power, uses her shapeshifting to resist him. She learns her true parentage is angelic, making her a unique being of immense power. As the battle continues, Tessa uses her full angelic potential, becoming an angelic warrior and beginning to break Mortmain's control over his army.
With her new angelic power, Tessa confronts Mortmain directly. She uses her abilities to cut his connection to the automatons, making them inert. Mortmain, stripped of his power, is defeated and killed by the Shadowhunters. The battle leaves many wounded, and the London Institute begins to recover. Charlotte is proven right, and her leadership is secured. Henry, despite his injuries, continues his work on new inventions. The Clave admits its failures and Consul Wayland's betrayal.
Afterward, the London Institute heals. Gideon and Sophie marry, starting a new branch of the Lightwood family. Gabriel and Cecily also find love and marry. Will and Tessa finally embrace their love. They marry and live a long, happy life, having children and contributing much to the Shadowhunter world. Though Jem, as Brother Zachariah, remains in their lives, their path with him is forever changed.
The story ends by moving through Tessa's long life with Will, showing their joy, their family, and Will's peaceful death from old age. As an immortal, Tessa lives on, holding memories of her love for both Will and Jem. Decades later, she meets Brother Zachariah again, and he reveals he found a cure for his Silent Brother state, promising to return to his former self one day. The book ends with the understanding that Tessa, though she loved Will deeply, will always carry a piece of Jem in her heart, and their paths will cross again in the future.

This theme explores the many forms of love—romantic, platonic, family—and the sacrifices people make for those they care about. Tessa's love for both Will and Jem forces her into an impossible choice, showing the pain and beauty of deep connection. Jem's decision to become a Silent Brother is the ultimate sacrifice of self for the greater good and for the happiness of his loved ones. Will's years of self-imposed isolation to protect others, and his willingness to step aside for Jem, show the selfless depth of his affection. The theme also includes Charlotte's sacrifices for the Institute and Sophie's commitment to her adopted family.
““Life is a book, and there are a thousand pages I have not yet read. I want to read them with you, whatever they have in store for us.””
Tessa's entire journey focuses on discovering her true identity as a half-angel, a revelation that sets her apart from both ordinary people and Shadowhunters. Her struggle to understand her origins and powers is central to her character. Will's identity is shaped by the false curse he believes he carries, leading him to create a persona that hides his true self. Jem also grapples with his identity as his life fades, ending in his transformation into Brother Zachariah. This theme also applies to characters like Sophie, who finds her place and identity within the Shadowhunter world despite being an ordinary person.
““We are not meant to be alone, and if we are, we are meant to find our way back to each other.””
Many characters in 'Clockwork Princess' are torn between personal desires and perceived duties. Tessa's love for Will and Jem conflicts with her promise to marry Jem and her loyalty to both men. Will's desire for Tessa is controlled by his duty to Jem as his sworn brother. Charlotte's personal life and desires are often overshadowed by her duty as the head of the London Institute, facing constant scrutiny from the Clave. This theme highlights the difficult choices characters make when their hearts pull them one way and their obligations another, often leading to deep internal conflict and sacrifice.
““I am not a bad person. I am a person who has made bad choices.””
Mortmain's army of mechanical soldiers.
The Infernal Devices are the central antagonistic force, a growing army of automatons created by Mortmain. They serve as a constant physical threat to the Shadowhunters and a symbol of Mortmain's hatred. Initially, they are simple machines, but as Mortmain incorporates Tessa's unique angelic power, they become more sophisticated and deadly, capable of mimicking Shadowhunters. Their evolution drives much of the plot's urgency and danger, culminating in the final battle at Mortmain's stronghold.
Tessa's unique ability to transform and her true origins.
Tessa's shapeshifting ability is a key plot device, initially a mystery that makes her a target for Mortmain. It allows her to gain information and insight by mimicking others. The revelation of her angelic heritage is a significant turning point, explaining her powers and making her the ultimate weapon against Mortmain. Her ability to channel angelic energy is crucial in the climax, directly leading to Mortmain's defeat and the neutralization of his automatons. It also explains her immortality, setting up her future encounters.
A sacred, unbreakable bond between two Shadowhunters.
The parabatai bond between Will and Jem is a central emotional and thematic device. It represents an unbreakable connection, a love deeper than brotherhood, and a profound loyalty that complicates their shared love for Tessa. The bond influences their decisions, their sacrifices, and their internal struggles. Jem's transformation into a Silent Brother severs this bond in its traditional sense, adding to the tragedy and making their separation even more poignant, though their spiritual connection endures.
A demon drug that sustains Jem but slowly kills him.
Yin fen is the catalyst for much of the emotional conflict and urgency surrounding Jem. It is the demon drug that keeps him alive after his parents' murder but slowly poisons and weakens him, giving him a terminal illness. This device creates a ticking clock for Jem's life, forcing difficult decisions regarding his engagement to Tessa and Will's desperate search for a cure. It ultimately leads to Jem's sacrifice and transformation into a Silent Brother, fundamentally altering the trajectory of his relationships and the narrative.
