Plot Summary

Lucien's Sickness and the Mysterious Notebook

Lucien Mulholland, a fifteen-year-old boy in modern London, is very ill with cancer and stays in bed. He finds comfort in reading and his cat, Baldo. One day, his father brings him an old, leather-bound Italian notebook from a second-hand shop. The notebook, which seems to have a subtle energy, soon becomes more than just an object. As Lucien holds it, he feels a strange disorientation and suddenly finds himself not in his bedroom, but in a busy city he does not know, during what seems to be a carnival. This is his first experience as a Stravagante, a traveler between worlds.

Arrival in Bellezza and Meeting Arianna

Lucien arrives in Bellezza, the parallel world's Venice, during the Carnival. He is confused by the sights, sounds, and smells of this historical city. Dressed in his modern clothes, he quickly stands out. While trying to navigate the crowded streets, he meets Arianna Gasparini, a lively girl his age. Arianna is disguised as a boy, 'Luciano,' trying to get a job as a mandolier for the Duchessa of Bellezza, a rare chance for someone from her background. She is careful at first but interested in Lucien's strange look and behavior, and they quickly become friends.

The Mandolier Auditions and a New Identity

Arianna, seeing Lucien's trouble and realizing he needs to fit in, gives him her boy's clothing, letting him take on the identity of 'Luciano.' With this disguise, Lucien manages to try out for the Duchessa Silvia's mandoliers. To his surprise, he is chosen, partly because of his unique presence and partly because the Duchessa, a fellow Stravagante, senses something special about him. During his training as a mandolier, Lucien befriends Rodolfo, a charming and experienced mandolier who is also the Duchessa's secret lover and a Stravagante. Rodolfo quickly becomes a mentor to Lucien in this new world.

The Duchessa's Secret and the Assassin

As Lucien settles into his role as a mandolier, he learns about the political dangers around the Duchessa Silvia. The powerful di Chimici family, rivals to the Duchessa, are always plotting against her. One evening, during a public event, Lucien's modern senses and sharp observation allow him to see an assassin hidden in the crowd, aiming for the Duchessa. Acting fast, he intervenes, causing a distraction that stops the assassination attempt and saves the Duchessa's life. This act secures his place in the Duchessa's inner circle and earns her trust, drawing him deeper into Bellezza's politics.

Giuliana's Betrayal and its Consequences

Duchessa Silvia uses a body-double, her maid Giuliana, for public appearances to protect herself. Giuliana, however, makes a mistake by telling this secret to her fiancé, Enrico. Enrico, ambitious and easily influenced, is secretly a spy for the di Chimici family. He uses this information, telling his masters about the deception. This betrayal causes a series of bad events, threatening the Duchessa's life and Bellezza's stability. The body-double secret, once a protection, becomes a danger because of Giuliana's trust in the wrong person.

The Di Chimici's Plot Intensifies

With the knowledge that Giuliana is the Duchessa's body-double, the di Chimici family increases their plot. They plan to kidnap or kill the real Duchessa, replacing her with Giuliana under their control, or at least using the confusion to destabilize Bellezza and take power. Enrico, promised wealth and status, actively helps in their plans, unknowingly endangering Giuliana. The risks grow, and Lucien, Rodolfo, and the Duchessa's loyal people must work fast to uncover the full extent of the di Chimici's plans and protect Silvia from immediate danger.

Meeting William Dethridge, the Original Stravagante

Amidst the political unrest, Lucien meets William Dethridge, an elderly, mysterious man. Dethridge reveals he is the first Stravagante, an Elizabethan alchemist who discovered how to travel between worlds centuries ago. He explains Stravaganza, its rules, and responsibilities. Dethridge, having watched Lucien's abilities and actions, sees a possible successor in him. He begins to mentor Lucien, helping him understand his gift and the larger purpose he might serve in protecting the balance between the worlds. This meeting changes Lucien's understanding of his own destiny.

The Rescue of the Duchessa

The di Chimici's plot ends with an attempt to kidnap Duchessa Silvia. Lucien, Rodolfo, and other loyal guards race to stop their plans. Using his unique perspective and quick thinking, Lucien helps identify the di Chimici's agents and disrupts their operations. A tense chase and fight happen through Bellezza's canals and hidden passages. Through courage and teamwork, they rescue the Duchessa, though with much danger and sacrifice. This event shows Lucien's growing bravery and his commitment to his new friends and the world of Bellezza.

The Fate of Giuliana and Enrico

After the failed kidnapping, Enrico's full betrayal and Giuliana's unwitting involvement come out. Giuliana, though sorry, is involved in the plot because of her mistake. Enrico is exposed as a traitor to the Duchessa and Bellezza, facing severe punishment for his role with the di Chimici. Giuliana's fate is sad, a reminder of the dangerous political situation and the high cost of naive actions in a world of complex power struggles, leaving a lasting impact on Lucien.

Lucien's Growing Powers and Future Role

With the Duchessa safe and the immediate threat gone, Lucien thinks about his journey. His experiences in Bellezza have changed him, both physically and emotionally. His illness in the modern world seems to lessen during his time as a Stravagante. He has learned to use his Stravagante abilities with more confidence and skill. William Dethridge continues to guide him, stressing the importance of their role in protecting Bellezza. Lucien begins to understand that his connection to this world is not just an escape but a calling, suggesting a larger destiny and a future as a protector of Bellezza, like Dethridge before him.

Themes & Insights

The Healing Power of Purpose

Lucien's journey as a Stravagante is tied to his physical health. In his modern world, he is very ill. However, each time he travels to Bellezza, his illness seems to improve, and he gains strength. This suggests that finding a purpose, a sense of belonging, and the chance to be brave and useful has a healing effect on him, both mentally and physically. His active part in Bellezza's life, from being a mandolier to saving the Duchessa, contrasts with his passive life in London, showing how purpose can energize the spirit and body.

In Bellezza, the sickness that clung to him in London seemed to thin, to become a distant echo rather than a suffocating presence.

Narrator

Identity and Transformation

The theme of identity is key, especially for Lucien and Arianna. Lucien, first defined by his illness, finds a new identity as 'Luciano' and a Stravagante in Bellezza, letting him shed the limits of his modern self. Arianna, by dressing as a boy, 'Luciano,' challenges social rules to follow her ambitions, creating a temporary identity that gives her power. These changes show how circumstances and choices can reshape who characters are, offering freedom and new possibilities. New names and roles signify a shift in their self-perception and abilities.

He was Luciano now, a mandolier, not the sick boy in London. Here, he could be someone else, someone strong.

Lucien's internal thought

Loyalty and Betrayal

Bellezza's complex political world is marked by loyalty and betrayal. Rodolfo's steady loyalty to Duchessa Silvia, as her lover and a Stravagante, is a main part of her protection. On the other hand, Giuliana's naive trust in Enrico, and Enrico's later betrayal of her and the Duchessa to the di Chimici family, drives much of the conflict. This theme explores the results of misplaced trust and the moral difficulties of political maneuvering, showing how personal relationships can affect state affairs and individual lives.

Trust, once broken, shattered more than just hearts; it could dismantle kingdoms.

Narrator

The Allure and Danger of Power

Power dynamics are always present in Bellezza. Duchessa Silvia uses her power wisely and kindly, working for her city's good, yet she is always threatened by those who want her position. The di Chimici family shows the corrupting and destructive nature of uncontrolled ambition, constantly plotting to take power by any means, including assassination and manipulation. This theme explores the responsibilities of leadership, the dangers faced by those in authority, and how far people and groups will go to get or keep control.

The di Chimici tasted power like a hungry dog, never satisfied, always seeking more.

Plot Devices & Literary Techniques

The Stravagante Notebook

A magical notebook that serves as the conduit for inter-world travel.

The old Italian notebook is the primary magical artifact and plot device. It acts as the physical link between modern London and 16th-century Bellezza, allowing Lucien to become a Stravagante. Its mysterious properties are activated by touch and intent, transporting him across time and space. The notebook is not merely a tool but also a symbol of the unknown and the call to adventure, driving the entire narrative by initiating Lucien's journey and enabling his repeated visits to Bellezza. It represents the gateway to a different life and a new destiny.

Stravaganza (Inter-world Travel)

The unique ability to travel between parallel worlds, specifically modern London and Bellezza.

Stravaganza is the overarching magical system and central plot device. It defines the unique ability of certain individuals, the Stravagantes, to mentally project themselves into a parallel world that mirrors a historical period of their own. This device allows for the blend of fantasy and historical fiction, creating a rich setting and enabling the protagonist's transformation. It introduces elements of danger, responsibility, and a secret society, shaping the characters' motivations and the story's core conflict as they navigate two distinct realities.

The Body-Double

A strategic deception used by the Duchessa to protect herself from assassination.

The use of Giuliana as a body-double for Duchessa Silvia is a crucial plot device that initially provides security but ultimately becomes a source of extreme vulnerability and conflict. It highlights the constant threat to the Duchessa's life and the cunning required to rule Bellezza. When the secret of the body-double is exposed by Giuliana, it serves as a catalyst for the escalating di Chimici plot, demonstrating how a clever protective measure can be turned into a dangerous weakness through betrayal and misjudgment, driving the suspense and action of the story.

Carnival Setting

The festive and chaotic atmosphere of Bellezza's Carnival, used for disguise and intrigue.

The Carnival in Bellezza is more than just a backdrop; it's a significant plot device. Its inherent chaos, masks, and opportunities for disguise allow Lucien to blend in upon his first arrival and for Arianna to adopt her 'Luciano' persona. This setting facilitates initial character introductions and provides a natural environment for intrigue, assassination attempts, and secret meetings. The festive atmosphere contrasts sharply with the underlying political tension, creating a dynamic and often deceptive environment where identities can be hidden or revealed, and plots can unfold under the guise of celebration.
