Lucien Mulholland, a fifteen-year-old boy in modern London, is very ill with cancer and stays in bed. He finds comfort in reading and his cat, Baldo. One day, his father brings him an old, leather-bound Italian notebook from a second-hand shop. The notebook, which seems to have a subtle energy, soon becomes more than just an object. As Lucien holds it, he feels a strange disorientation and suddenly finds himself not in his bedroom, but in a busy city he does not know, during what seems to be a carnival. This is his first experience as a Stravagante, a traveler between worlds.
Arrival in Bellezza and Meeting Arianna
