In the final battle, the Dragon Reborn confronts the Dark One to save reality from the Shadow, fulfilling ancient prophecies.
The book starts with the world near Tarmon Gai'don, the Last Battle. Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn, gets ready to face the Dark One. Perrin Aybara deals with his wolf-brother nature and the pursuit of Slayer, who hunts him in Tel'aran'rhiod. Mat Cauthon, General of the Armies of the Light, feels overwhelmed by the conflict's size, as the Shadow's forces, led by the Forsaken, attack on many fronts. The Seanchan, under Empress Fortuona (Tuon), arrive, their alliance with Rand fragile but needed. Logain Ablar and his Asha'man are important for defense, while Egwene al'Vere, the Amyrlin Seat, leads the White Tower's forces.
Mat Cauthon, despite not wanting to, takes command of the combined armies of the Light. He struggles with the many fronts and the Shadow's large forces, but his memories from the Aelfinn and Eelfinn, along with his luck and tactical skill, let him quickly understand and respond to threats. He sends out armies, including the Seanchan, Borderlanders, and various national forces, trying to hold the line against the Shadow's constant attacks. His strategies often seem messy to others but are effective, though many lives are lost.
Egwene al'Vere, as Amyrlin Seat, helps unite the different nations at the Field of Merrilor. She uses diplomacy and the White Tower's authority to form a fragile alliance, despite ongoing mistrust. During the battle, she fights Mazrim Taim, who is a new Forsaken, M'Hael, and later Graendal. Egwene shows great strength and control of the One Power, ending with her sacrifice to create a new weave, the Flame of Tar Valon. This weave counters the Shadow's destructive weaves and cleans tainted flows of the Power, saving many lives and changing the battle's course.
Perrin Aybara's main battle happens in Tel'aran'rhiod, the Wolf Dream, where he hunts Slayer, the mysterious killer of wolves and Dreamer. Slayer, who is Isam, Luc's half-brother, targets Perrin. Perrin struggles with his wolf-brother nature, fearing to fully use it lest he lose his humanity, but he must to match Slayer's power in the dream world. He also works to protect the Dream from the Dark One's influence, closing cracks. His journey ends in a brutal, long fight with Slayer, forcing Perrin to use his axe and wolf senses completely.
While the Last Battle rages, Rand al'Thor goes to Shayol Ghul, the Bore to the Dark One's prison. He enters the Pit of Doom, with Moiraine Damodred and Nynaeve al'Meara, to face the Dark One directly. His goal is not to kill the Dark One, which would break the Wheel of Time, but to reseal his prison and fix the Bore, keeping the Dark One contained. This confrontation is mental and spiritual, a philosophical battle for existence and free will, happening in a series of alternate realities and arguments.
Inside the Pit of Doom, Rand and the Dark One have a cosmic struggle. The Dark One tempts Rand with visions of a world without suffering, offering to reshape reality into a perfect, controlled existence. Rand, however, argues for the importance of choice, free will, and the need for both good and evil for true growth and humanity. He experiences many alternate timelines and realities, seeing what the world would be like if the Dark One won, or if he himself had joined the Shadow. This mental battle is shown as a weaving of creation, with Rand struggling to keep the world as it should be.
During the Last Battle, the remaining Forsaken die. Demandred, leading the Shadow's main force, is a strong opponent, killing Gawyn and Galad before Lan Mandragoran defeats him in a fight. Moghedien is caught by the Seanchan. Moridin, the Dark One's chosen champion, fights Rand in the Pit of Doom, his fate linked to Rand's. Graendal is confronted by Egwene and later by Aviendha. Semirhage and Mesaana were dealt with earlier, leaving only a few to face the end, their power lessening as the Light pushes back.
In a desperate moment during the Last Battle, as the Light's forces are about to be defeated, Olver, the young boy carrying the Horn of Valere, sounds it. This calls the legendary Heroes of the Horn, including Artur Hawkwing, Gaidal Cain, and Birgitte Silverbow, back to the world. They appear on the battlefield, giving a crucial boost of power and morale, changing the course of many sectors and fighting the Shadow's most powerful creatures and Fades. Their arrival is a prophesied event, needed for the Light's victory.
After a difficult mental and spiritual battle, Rand reseals the Dark One's prison. However, instead of just restoring the old seals, he weaves a new, stronger prison, putting the idea of free will and choice into its structure. This new prison keeps the Dark One contained without destroying him, thus keeping the Wheel balanced. This huge effort greatly affects Rand, leaving him seemingly dead to those who see his body taken from Shayol Ghul.
After the Last Battle, the world is ruined but saved. The surviving characters begin rebuilding. Mat and Tuon strengthen their alliance, setting up a new Seanchan Empire. Perrin fully accepts his role, with Faile. Elayne Trakand begins her rule as Queen of Andor and Cairhien. Nynaeve, Moiraine, and other Aes Sedai continue their work. In a surprising turn, Rand al'Thor's body is burned, but his mind has moved into Moridin's body, who also seemed to have died. Rand, now able to channel without drawing attention and able to subtly manipulate reality, rides off, free from the burdens of the Dragon Reborn, starting a new, unknown journey with his pipe smoking on its own.

'A Memory of Light' explores the nature of good and evil, especially through Rand's fight with the Dark One. The Dark One argues that suffering is part of life and offers a world without choice and pain, which he sees as perfect. Rand, however, argues that free will, even with its capacity for both good and evil, gives life meaning and allows for growth and love. This theme appears in the choices characters make under pressure, the constant fight against internal darkness (e.g., Perrin's wolf nature), and the need for both light and shadow for the Wheel to turn.
““The Dark One desires to remake the world in his own image, a place of order and perfection, where no choice can be made. But choice is what makes us human. Choice is what makes us free.””
Sacrifice is a theme, shown by Egwene al'Vere's self-sacrifice to save the armies of Light with the Flame of Tar Valon. Many characters, from Gawyn Trakand to unnamed soldiers, make sacrifices for the greater good. Redemption is also shown, particularly through Logain Ablar, who, once a false Dragon, finds his purpose and becomes a hero leading the Asha'man. Even Rand's final act, appearing to die but changing bodies, is a sacrifice of his identity as the Dragon Reborn for a chance at a new life and freedom.
““The grave is no bar to my call. The Light needs heroes. It always has.””
Characters constantly deal with the conflict between their personal desires and the duties given to them by prophecy, leadership, or circumstance. Mat Cauthon shows this, always complaining about being a general while skillfully leading armies. Rand al'Thor's whole life is defined by his duty as the Dragon Reborn, forcing him to put aside personal happiness until the end. Perrin Aybara struggles with his duty to protect his people and the pull of the Wolf Dream. This theme shows the pressures on the heroes and the strength needed to do their jobs.
““Duty is heavier than a mountain, Mat. Death is lighter than a feather.””
The Last Battle needs unity among different nations and groups, a major task that is a core theme. Egwene al'Vere's efforts at the Field of Merrilor to unite the rulers, and Mat Cauthon's ability to command armies from various cultures (including the Seanchan), show the challenges and successes of leadership. The book emphasizes that no one person can defeat the Shadow alone; it needs collective action, trust, and shared purpose, even among those with old disagreements. The fragility and eventual strength of these alliances are central to the Light's survival.
““The Light needs us to stand together. Not as nations, not as peoples, but as one.””
The series, and 'A Memory of Light' especially, centers on fate (prophecy) and free will. Rand's fight with the Dark One is a direct philosophical debate on this, with the Dark One representing total control and Rand supporting choice. While prophecies guide many events, characters constantly make choices within those limits, sometimes fulfilling prophecies in unexpected ways, or even seeming to go against them. Rand's final act of resealing the Dark One's prison with a new weave that includes free will is the end of this theme, suggesting that even destiny can be shaped by choice.
““The Pattern may weave us, but we still have a say in the threads. We still have choices.””
A shared dream world where thoughts become reality, serving as a secondary battlefield.
Tel'aran'rhiod is a crucial alternate dimension, a world of dreams where the physical laws of the waking world do not apply, and consciousness can manifest reality. In 'A Memory of Light,' it serves as a vital secondary battlefield where Perrin Aybara hunts Slayer and combats the Dark One's influence. It allows for rapid travel, communication, and unique forms of combat. The integrity of Tel'aran'rhiod is essential, as its corruption could have catastrophic effects on the waking world, making Perrin's struggle there as important as the physical battles.
A magical artifact that summons legendary heroes from the past to fight for the Light.
The Horn of Valere is a powerful artifact prophesied to be sounded during the Last Battle. When blown, it summons the souls of legendary heroes from across the ages, binding them to the banner of the Light. In 'A Memory of Light,' its sounding by Olver at a critical juncture provides a massive, timely reinforcement of ancient champions like Artur Hawkwing and Birgitte Silverbow. This device serves as a literal deus ex machina, providing a powerful emotional and tactical turning point when the forces of Light are at their most desperate.
A treaty proposed by Rand to unite the nations and prevent future wars.
The Dragon's Peace is a binding agreement proposed by Rand al'Thor at the Field of Merrilor, intended to unify the nations of the world and prevent war for a thousand years after the Last Battle. This plot device establishes the political stakes of the conflict beyond just defeating the Dark One, emphasizing Rand's vision for a lasting peace. The negotiations and eventual signing of the Peace highlight the complexities of inter-nation diplomacy and the enduring mistrust that must be overcome for true unity, even in the face of ultimate evil.
A newly discovered weave of the One Power, used by Egwene to counter the Shadow.
The Flame of Tar Valon is a new, incredibly powerful weave of the One Power discovered and utilized by Egwene al'Vere during her final confrontation with M'Hael (Mazrim Taim). This weave is capable of counteracting the Shadow's destructive balefire-like weaves and purifying tainted flows of the Power. It is a plot device that showcases the potential for innovation and growth within the One Power, even after millennia. Egwene's use of it, though fatal to her, provides a critical turning point in the battle, demonstrating the ultimate sacrifice and the power of light over shadow.
The unexpected transfer of Rand's consciousness into Moridin's body.
At the climax of the novel, following Rand's confrontation with the Dark One, his consciousness inexplicably transfers into the body of Moridin, who had also seemingly died in the Pit of Doom. This twist allows Rand to escape the burdens of being the Dragon Reborn, live a life free from prophecy, and wield the One Power without drawing attention due to his unique link with Moridin. This device provides a poignant and unexpected ending for Rand, offering him a personal freedom he could not have otherwise achieved, while leaving his legacy as the Dragon intact for the world to remember.
